Tag team
The Races SA Tag Team has been pounding the pavement in search of the State’s best dressed guys and gals. Spring Carnival saw them hit up the Adelaide Fashion Festival on Norwood Parade with local fashionistas challenged to bring their A-game to the track. Were you spotted by our Tag Team? Tag yourself in our Facebook album and start planning your raceday outfits now!
Queen Clare After a few nervous weeks and with the weight of the State on her shoulders, Clare Lindop went where no Australian female jockey has gone before – past 1000 career wins. The star jockey celebrated the feat aboard Perfect Punch at Morphettville in October, with this latest record adding to her already impressive collection of firsts. Clare was the first Australian female to win a Group 1 race and ride in the Melbourne Cup and was in August this year, crowned the inaugural winner of the John Letts Medal at the Thoroughbred Racing South Australia Industry Awards.

What an honour Next time you’re at The Races at Morphettville, hop off the escalator on the first floor of the Grandstand and check out the new Hall of Fame honourboard taking pride of place on the wall. It’s a wonderful tribute to thoroughbred racing legends - past and present - and is a great reminder of the success stories we’ve produced in South Australia.

I’ll be the judge of that interview with melissa ware It’s not uncommon that people do a double take when they look up at the judges’ box on race day and see a female – a young one at that – taking pride of place in the hot seat. With binoculars raised and clipboard at the ready, Melissa Ware has made her mark in the thoroughbred racing industry. Just don’t confuse her role on race day. “Whenever I tell people I’m a judge, they always think I mean judge of Fashion on the Field!” the 25-year old racing enthusiast says.
Melissa works for Thoroughbred Racing SA, the governing body of thoroughbred racing in South Australia. Since moving over to Adelaide from Warrnambool in 2008, she has worn a number of hats within the racing department, juggling the role of Editor of The Races magazine with her responsibilities as SABOIS Coordinator (the South Australian Breeders and Owners Incentive Scheme).
“I like to think I can bring a young person’s perspective to racing. It’s not just a job for me. You’ve got to love what you’re doing.”
The Races Quarterly South Australia
profile| 21
“I was only 23 when I moved over, straight off the farm, and it was very intimidating not knowing anyone in Adelaide,” she recalls. Melissa was the only girl working in an all male department. But gain the boys’ respect she did – and quickly. “Soon after I started they said I’d have to join the race day judging panel and they threw me in to watch how it was done with the boys,” she says. It wasn’t long before Melissa was judging a race on her own. Sky Channel even broadcast to a national audience that she was the industry’s youngest female race day judge.
“It was pretty daunting, I was just hanging out to get to Race 8!” Nearly four years on, she’s well and truly proven herself, coping with her fair share of photo finishes and dead heats and also helping out as Assistant Clerk of Scales on race day. “I can’t believe I get paid to be around horses, it’s great!” she says. “I really enjoy playing an integral role at the races.” Growing up on a farm and the daughter of racehorse owners, Melissa’s passion for horses has been a lifelong love. At six years of age, she became the proud owner
of Dougie, a solid, loyal companion who spent years with her in pony club. She later reached the top three in the Equestrian Young Ambassador competition in Victoria, became a Junior Show Ambassador in the State Final for 16 to 20year olds, and reached the State Final in the Rural Ambassador Awards. It seems she was destined for a life working with horses. So what next? With a Bachelor of Management (Marketing) from Deakin University already under her belt and ambitions of completing an MBA, Melissa has her sights set on progressing up the ranks in racing.
“I like to think I can bring a young person’s perspective to racing. It’s not just a job for me. You’ve got to love what you’re doing,” she says. Melissa names Gai Waterhouse as her role model in racing circles and admires the achievements of record-breaking jockey Clare Lindop. As for career aspirations, she dreams of one day running the Melbourne Cup. Until then, she relishes the opportunity to play a part in the local industry and help South Australian racing forge a reputation as national thoroughbred powerhouse.
