Celebrate the NPS centennial along the Scenic Byway One tremendous advantage enjoyed by our Scenic Byway, New York State Route 97, is that virtuallyits entire length runs through part of the U.S. National Park System: the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. Although most of the land on the banks of the river in the park corridor is still privately owned, communities along the corridor, united in a body called the Upper Delaware Council, work together with the National Park Service (NPS) to protect the “outstandingly remarkable attributes” for which this area was chosen to be part of the U.S. Wild and Scenic River program. The result is many spectacular and unspoiled prospects from the road itself, and a multiplicity of public access points that allow you to get up front and personal with the river, just a stone’s throw from the highway. This year, that synergy between

road and park will be particularly vibrant. That’s because the National Park System (NPS) is celebrating its centennial, and all over the country, individual parks will be holding special programs and events for visitors to enjoy. The Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River is no exception. In this issue of Explore the Scenic Byway, we lead you on a tour of some of the major events that the NPS has planned to celebrate its 100th birthday. You’ll find them all summer long, all along the Route 97 Scenic Byway (the map on page 22 will help you find your way around). We thank the NPS, and especially Superintendent Kristina Heister, Chief of Interpretation Ingrid Peterec and Chief of Natural Resources Management Don Hamilton, for their generous help in providing information and photographs for this issue.

Shad and the Delaware

American shad (Alosa sapidissima) are the largest members of the herring family in North America, schooling sea-run migratory fish that run up Atlantic Coast rivers to spawn in the spring. The Delaware River had the largest runs of American shad of any river on the Atlantic Coast through the 1800s. The Atlantic shad fishery declined dramatically during the 1900s, and though a resurgence occurred in the 1980s into the 1990s, it has been followed by a worrisome decline again in recent years. The Delaware River remains a very significant river for the survival of American shad, as the last major river on the Atlantic Coast undammed the length of its main stem.

June 4. 100-mile paddle. First stage: Hancock, NY to Lordville, NY Park ambassador Bob Hare will lead a paddle along with park rangers, members of local government and community organizations, on a total of just over 100 miles of river, on a variety of dates during the summer starting on June 4. Hare will cover 73 miles on the Upper Delaware River on eight days in eight sections, before going south to our sister park, the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, to paddle another 30 miles. Hare’s cohort will vary by section, but he will be paddling the whole route. Hare retired from AT&T after 26 years, and began a new adventure: volunteering with the National Park Service. Along with his wife, Barbara, Bob has volunteered at Petrified Forrest National Park in Arizona, 10 ExplorE ThE ScEnic Byway

Bob has been canoeing on the Upper Delaware River for the past eight summers, and has completed 4,626 river miles. June 18-25. Delaware River Sojourn. The Delaware River Sojourn, now in its 22nd year, is a seven- or eightday guided paddle on the Delaware River, complete with outdoor meals, overnight camping, educational programs and good company. This year’s theme is “Find Your River: Celebrating 100 Years of the National Park Service!” For each Sojourn, a “Lord (or Lady) High Admiral” is selected to lead the participants and MC the proceedings. The title honors Daniel Skinner, an innovator in the timber-raft trade of the

late 18th and early 19th centuries who was dubbed as such in recognition of his domination of the river industry. The admiral isn’t announced until the first day of the trip, so you’ll have to wait for the surprise. Past admirals include Bill Douglas and Laurie Ramie, both honored for their years of service with the Upper Delaware Council; Sean McGuiness, then park superintendent, who created more open lines of communication between NPS, grassroots groups, liveries and locals; and Ramsey Adams and Wes Gillingham from Catskill Mountainkeeper, a strong advocate

for the defense of our area’s pristine wild areas and open spaces. You don’t have to sign up for the whole thing; join for a day, a few days or a week. Transportation is provided to participants between pull-out points and their cars. Usually, the trip is broken up between the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River and other portions of the river to the south of us. This year, on day 1, June 18, paddlers will go from Skinners Falls, NY to Ten Mile River, NY. Those who wish can paddle down to the access near the Zane Grey Museum in Lackawaxen, PA. A shuttle will be available from Ten Mile River to Lackawaxen for those who prefer not to paddle the whole way On day 2, June 19, the sojourn will travel from the Zane Grey Museum access to Lander’s Pond Eddy Base. The balance of the Sojourn this year will take place on portions of the river below the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River and the Scenic Byway. June 24-25. NPS Centennial BioBlitz. Ten Mile River, Tusten, NY. To celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary, Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River is hosting a BioBlitz event on June 24-25. A BioBlitz is an event where scientists and other volunteers gather to collect, identify, and catalogue every living thing on a demarcated property in a 24-hour period. The results are typically made available to the public following the collection period, along with various workshops and talks. For this BioBlitz, teams of scientists and amateur naturalists will spend the first day, June 24, surveying the area around the Ten Mile River Access to identify the plants and animals that call it home. If you’re interested in volunteering to work on a team at the BioBlitz, email steward@ delawarehighlands.org. The public is invited to meet the scientists, see what they have 14 Explore The Scenic Byway

collected, and participate in programs such as walks and talks led by the scientists from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 25 at the head of Rock Lake on Cochecton Turnpike. The 25th will be a great day to bring the kids to Ten Mile River to take a look at some of the life forms, both flora and fauna, that have been gathered, and learn how to identify common plants and animals themselves. It’s an opportunity to take nature walks, learn about nature photography, and interact with scientists.

July 16. Zane Grey Festival Lackawaxen, PA. 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

National Park Service Photo

The Zane Grey Festival is a family friendly event, including kids’ activities like birdhouse building.

The Zane Grey’s West Society will join with the NPS to hold the 12th annual Zane Grey Festival at the Zane Grey Museum on the banks of the Delaware. Grey was not only a pre-eminent writer in the American Western genre, but an avid angler who wrote extensively about fishing, and the museum is located in the house he owned at the confluence of the Delaware and Lackawaxen rivers. Visitors can learn about the rich natural and cultural history of the Upper Delaware River Valley by visiting exhibitors such as the Woodland Spinners and Weavers, where you can try your hand at weaving, or the Delaware Highlands Conservancy to help build an eagles nest, just to 20 Explore The Scenic Byway

name a couple. Children’s activities include learning to pan for “gold,” arts and crafts, and playing games from the past. Bill Streeter of the Delaware Valley Raptor Center will be there with his live birds of prey. Music will be played throughout the day and will include a performance by Carol Diefenbach from the Delaware Valley Opera. New this year will be horse-drawn wagon rides from the Zane Grey Museum to the Roebling Bridge, provided by the Brookvalley Farm from Fell Township, PA. And for those of you who are also avid anglers—or would just like to launch a canoe—there is a public fishing access right across from the museum.

The Big Eddy at Narrowsburg, NY

August 13. National Park Service Birthday Bash Narrowsburg, NY. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The NPS throws a 100th-birthday bash with a day full of activities in Narrowsburg, NY, a hamlet with panoramic views over the picturesque Big Eddy. The park service plans to muster a regatta of canoes to form a big “100” in the eddy, right where it will be clearly visible to viewers from the nearby bridge and the bluffs that edge the river at that point. Other activities will take place at the Narrowsburg Union, an old school 30 Explore The Scenic Byway

building on Erie Avenue that has just been repurposed as a community center. There will be birthday foods like ice cream, hot dogs and—of course!—a birthday cake. Games like sack races and pin-the-tail-onthe-bison will provide activities for children of all ages, and the National Canoe Safety Program will be raffling off life preservers. A birthday card contest is among the other activities being planned. For more information and updates about the event contact Anya Shaunessy at 570/685-4871, ext. 6610 or visit www.nps.gov/upde.
