EXPLORE Port Jervis is the southern gateway of the Scenic Byway. Benefiting from its location on two different bodies of water—the Delaware River and the Delaware & Hudson Canal (D&H)— Port Jervis was for many years a major manufacturing and transportation hub. It was named “Port Jervis” only after it became a port on the D&H (in operation from 1828 to 1898); prior to that it was known as Carpenter’s Point. The Gillinder Glass Factory, still in operation, is a holdover from Port Jervis’s golden manufacturing era. The factory still not only makes glass, but holds tours for the public. If you’re looking to shop, browse for antiques or eat, Front Street is a favorite destination, and there is a scenic walking tour, complete with markers, along the Delaware River Heritage Trail that leads you past historical sites and scenic river views. Other places to visit in Port Jervis include Fort Decker, the museum of the Minisink Valley Historical Society (125-133 West Main St.). The current structure was built in 1793 out of the remains of the original fort, which had been burned by the famed Native American Joseph Brant (a British ally) during a Revolutionary War raid in 1779. Also popular is the Tri-State Rock, at the junction of Neversink and Delaware rivers in Laurel Grove Cemetery. Here you can stand in three states at one time. And if you’re looking for an exciting driving experience, don’t miss the 4 EXPLORE THE SCENIC BYWAY

EXPLORE The Pond Eddy Bridge, also known as the All-Veterans Memorial Bridge, is a petit truss bridge spanning the Delaware River between the hamlet of Pond Eddy in Lumberland, NY and the settlement informally called Pond Eddy in Shohola Township, PA. Built in 1903, it is listed on both the national and New York State registers of historic places, and up until recently it has been the pride of Pond Eddy. Unfortunately, over the years, the bridge’s condition has deteriorated, weakening its retaining strength, and construction to replace the bridge is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2016. Although bridge advocates are still fighting a rearguard action to preserve it, you should seize the opportunity to see

EXPLORE The hamlet of Barryville grew up around the D&H Canal, which opened in 1828 and operated until 1898. The canal ran through what is today the center of the hamlet. Indeed, look along the river side of the road between Barryville and the Roebling Bridge, and you will see the remains of massive stonework that was once part of the canal. The canal company operated a number of stores, an office and a dry dock here. Like so many towns on the D&H, Barryville experienced a decline when the canal ceased operation. But it has experienced a revival in recent years, with the launch of restaurants, a hotel, a wine shop, a general store with specialty goods and a farmers’ market that takes place every Saturday, spring through fall. Just across the Barryville-Shohola Bridge lies the town of Shohola, PA, and the Red Caboose Museum, with 19th century railroad memorabilia. Not far from town, 51 Confederate prisoners and 17 Union guards were killed in the historic Shohola Train

EXPLORE Minsink Ford, NY has two major historical claims to fame. The first is the Roebling Bridge, which crosses the Delaware at that point, connecting Minisink Ford to Lackawaxen, PA. The bridge, designed by John Roebling, the same engineer who designed the Brooklyn Bridge, was built in 1849 as an aqueduct, connecting sections of the D&H canal lying on both sides of the river. Converted for use by vehicular traďŹƒc in 1898, it is the oldest wire suspension bridge in the country. Turn o on County Route 168 and drive about a mile from the Byway and you will come to the Minisink Battleground Park, site of a bloody Revolutionary War battle in which practically none on the American side survived. What was left of the bodies of those who were slain was not collected and buried for 43 years, a fact that has made the site attractive to paranormal investigators as well as those interested in history. The park

also provides some attractive hikes and picnic areas. Lackawaxen, right across the river, is the home of the Zane Grey Museum, run by the national Park Service. Zane Grey was both a famed author (and one of the fathers of the American Western) and an avid fly fisherman, who wrote extensively about fishing as well as the American West. The Lackawaxen River joins the Delaware at this point, and appropriately enough is a favorite fishing water, stocked yearly by the Pennsylvania Fish and Game Commission.

EXPLORE Narrowsburg Main Street in the hamlet of Narrowsburg, NY boasts probably the most dramatic river view of any of the river hamlets. Accordingly, the town has constructed a Main Street observation deck, complete with a viewing scope with which to see the eagles that congregate in especially high numbers at this point of the river, as well as the panoramic view of the river and the high bluffs surrounding the Big Eddy. The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, which serves as Arts Council for Sullivan County and hosts yearround art shows in its two galleries, is located here, along with the Tusten Theatre, which hosts performances of music, plays and even the local Delaware Opera Company. There’s fine dining, craft and antique shopping, public access to the river as well as a private campground

EXPLORE A few miles north of Narrowsburg you will find yourself on a low stretch of road with a wide view over flat, fertile fields to the river. Situated amid these fields is the hamlet of Cochecton, accessed via turnoffs from the Byway. It boasts a feed mill, Cochecton Mills, and the flat land on which it is built makes for rich, alluvial soil, typically planted with corn in season. But of course “alluvial” means land that has been deposited by running water— floods. Over time these floods have substantially reduced the size of this once bustling settlement. But a few lovely old buildings still stand, and the main street—part of the once heavily traveled Newburgh and Cochecton Turnpike—leads to a bridge across the Delaware River with a public fishing access on the opposite side. A bit north of the hamlet on the Byway, keep your eyes peeled for a large, standing wooden bear. It marks a turnoff to the Erie Railroad Station, a one-story Greek Revival station built around 1850, at the time the railroad pioneers built the first major trunk lines. The building was located on the property of Cochecton Mills until 1993, when a group of interested residents, hearing the station was about to be demolished, formed the Cochecton Preservation Society for the purpose of saving the station. The society has continued as an active preservation group that collects and preserves artifacts and stories of the area. 30 EXPLORE THE SCENIC BYWAY

EXPLORE The hamlet of Callicoon is generally considered to mark the extreme southern reach of the renowned Upper Delaware River coldwater fishery. Take one of the exits down the hill to get to the business district in town, where you will also find river access; Callicoon Creek Park, next to the river, which offers not only scenic views, but also hosts a bustling farmers’ market on Sundays from May to October; and a bridge over the Delaware. Cross the bridge and turn south on River Road for another public fishing access. The railway line that gave the town its original name, Callicoon Depot (the “Depot” was later dropped)— still used for freight trains—divides this town into an upper and lower Main Street. Most of the buildings date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a large part of the charm of this hamlet. Another little piece of history here is an old-

fashioned, art-deco style theatre that shows one movie at a time on a big screen, just like the old days. Driving into Callicoon from the south along the Byway, you will see an impressive stone building on a hill overlooking the rest of the hamlet. It was originally built in 1908 as a seminary, and now holds the Delaware Valley Job Corps Center.

Long Eddy

The Scenic Byway lapses for a distance between the northern border of the Town of Delaware and the Village of Hancock—but that doesn’t mean you won’t continue to be treated to views of rolling forest and farmland and the occasional sweeping river prospect. You’ll also pass through the town of Long Eddy, not an official stop on the Byway, but providing places to eat and a public river access. It also is the home of the Basket Historical Society, at 23 Railroad Ave., which collects and preserves artifacts, maintains a collection of such that is open to the public, and preserves and maintains historical sites and structures in the area.

EXPLORE The Village of Hancock, about 23 miles north of Callicoon, is the bookend to Port Jervis, comprising the northern gateway to the Scenic Byway. Here, where the Delaware River’s tailwaters meet, is a deep pool that is reputed to host especially large, wily trout, and is a favorite fishing spot. The village had its heyday during the period when the Erie Railroad prospered, roughly from 1850 to 1950, and it houses much historic architecture reflecting that fact. It was a center for both the timber and bluestone industries, and bluestone quarries still thrive in the area. Though it experienced a decline after railroad traďŹƒc petered out, there has been a recent revival led by a group called Hancock Partners. They have transformed a lot in the center of the town, tearing down a derelict supermarket and creating an attractive town square with grass, walkways and gazebo, which is used
