What is the First Use Month? If you acquire a vehicle and use it on the public highways in any month other than July, you are liable for the tax for the prorated tax period. You must file HVUT Form and pay the tax by the last day of the month after the month you first use the vehicle. If there is an unpaid tax liability for the months before you acquire and use the vehicle during the tax period, you are liable for the total tax for the entire period, to the extent not paid. In that case, you must file Form 2290 and pay the tax by the last day of the month after the month notification is received from the IRS that the tax has not been paid in full. IRS Form 2290 must be filed for the month the taxable vehicle is first used on public highways during the current period. The current period begins July 1, 2013, and ends June 30, 2014.

Note. If any due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, file by the next business day. If you first use multiple vehicles in more than one month, then a separate Form 2290 must be filed for each month.

How to File? To file the Form 2290 and receive a Stamped Schedule 1, it is possible to E-File this form online. This way you will receive a stamped Schedule 1 within minutes of filing. This process is much quicker and much more efficient than the old paper filing process. This is especially favorable because there is a shorter amount of time in which to file.

E-Filing E-File IRS Form 2290 for Vehicles First Used month Using ExpressTruckTax.com

When E-Filing IRS Form 2290 with IRS authorized E-File provider, ExpressTruckTax, you will be asked to provide the first use date for the vehicle. This dates refers to the time when the vehicle was placed in service during the tax period. If the vehicle has been placed in service for previous years and will continue to be in service this year, the first use month will be July. This is because the tax period for Heavy Vehicle Use Taxes begins July 1st and ends June 30th of the following year. Although the HVUT, or the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax is imposed annually, it is also mandatory for vehicles to file the IRS Form 2290 after the first use month. If a new vehicle is placed in service during the tax period, the first use month will be the month in which the vehicle was first used. If a vehicle was only used for part of the tax period, the tax will be prorated based on the number of months the vehicle was actually used. For example, if a vehicle was used on May 27th, it will be taxed as though it was used the entire month, regardless of the fact it was only used for a
