There are also some fantastic films from female directors, including the deliciously controversial Misbehaviour from Philippa Lowthorpe; Sarah Gavron’s dynamic Rocks, about an east London girlhood; and Emerald Fennell’s directing debut, Promising Young Woman, with a you-cannot-miss-it turn by Carey Mulligan. POINT
Tales Of The Unexpected Friday night just got a whole lot more fun, with the Surprise Film making its triumphant return to Picturehouse screens. We find out why it’s proving such to be such a hit with cinemagoers....
WHERE ELSE CAN YOU SPEND A FIVER AND ENJOY SOMETHING COMPLETELY NEW AND UNEXPECTED? That’s the rationale behind one of Picturehouse’s biggest successes of recent months, the Surprise Film, which has to date shown everything from Knives Out to The Farewell, to a wildly enthusiastic response. “They are always previews, and they are always different,” explains Carol McKay, programming director for Picturehouse, on the Friday night phenomenon that’s wowed audiences across the UK. “Once people are there, they are committed. It’s an exciting event.

You mention the idea of sacrifice. It is at the centre of the film, with Sarah trying not to sacrifice her daughter for her passion, and vice versa. I think the story echoes the reality of many women. I don’t know if the film gives an answer on how to do it all, but its message is definitely one that seeks to encourage women to pursue their dreams, even if it means going up against conventions and societal expectations. Being an astronaut and having children at the same time are very hard things to conciliate; you need very strong support from your family. The burden of guilt is very present in the film,

worried all the time.
Were you already familiar with the films of Alice Winocour? I had seen Augustine (2012) at the cinema. I remember being very surprised because although it was a feature debut, it was very powerful. I had also seen Disorder (2015) and I liked what she was doing. You could tell she was somebody who was interested in extreme situations and who liked to explore rather complex characters. Once I read the script, I didn’t hesitate one second to become part of this adventure.
The film has a very international cast and you were filming in real training facilities in very remote places, and therefore all had to stay together for long periods of time. How was that? It was great. When we go to places that are
“This film really gave me the opportunity to realise just how brave astronauts are. They are like superheroes”
Your character, Sarah, is put through intense physical training in the film. What was the most difficult part of the shoot for you? I couldn’t go on any of the machines that spin you around – that is a real phobia. So I didn’t go in the centrifuge, but I had a few training sessions with real trainers from the Russian training station, and that was very, very hard because I knew nothing at all about any of it, so they were getting a little mad at me! Otherwise, I was always in a state of great admiration. In Cologne, the astronauts and trainers explained to us some of the manoeuvres they do, and I’m not someone who is good at thinking logically or mathematically like this at all. I don’t know how they do it. They’re very strong physically and they have the mental strength of warriors.

Here, getting to know Zélie was really helpful, especially since we played a mother and a daughter and therefore really had to make that relationship believable. We are both rather shy, so it was good that we had this time to get used to each other. We played games together, we rehearsed some scenes... Alice is a perfectionist, she is 11

That’s a bit harsh. Well, Damon was promoting a Bourne film at the time.
What did Ian Fleming think of the films? Sadly Fleming only lived to see three of Bond’s big-screen outings, but perhaps this was a blessing in disguise. “Dreadful, simply dreadful,” is reported to have been his verdict on Dr. No.
What’s his enduring appeal?
James Bond
It’s been five years since Ian Fleming’s creation was last on the big screen, so it’s time for an MI6-style briefing on all things James Bond... So, who is this 007 anyway?
Sex, violence and booze. Pierce Brosnan is the deadliest Bond, having killed 135 unfortunate goons over four films. Roger Moore is the sexiest 007, statistically speaking, with 17 romantic conquests over seven films, but Daniel Craig is the booziest Bond, having downed 85 units of alcohol over his current four films.
We thought Craig said he’d never do another.
You’re kidding.
He did. “I’d rather break this glass and slash

it would be like putting four elephants on your chest! It’s already difficult for astronauts; it’s nearly impossible for other people. So for things like that it was special effects, and in the swimming pool training scene we had a real astronaut because the spacesuit is so heavy – 150kg – so she couldn’t have done it, but she did do a lot of protocols. What you see in the movie are the real protocols astronauts use.”
On Eva Green’s dedication to the role… “She really immersed herself in the part. We met many female astronauts together, and she underwent tough training to have the body of an astronaut. Eva was kind of like an Amazon. She was a different kind of mother that you don’t usually see in films because
