2019 CAMP CATALOG
Experiences & Adventures For All Abilities
DEAR FRIENDS, To all of you who had the opportunity to share the 2018 summer experience with us – THANK YOU for a great summer! At the end of each camp session, we send out a survey asking for feedback on camper and caregiver experiences. Thank you for that feedback; it helps us enhance our processes, procedures, and the programs we offer throughout the year. Due to the feedback we received, we have improved our processes: • Our application has been updated to reduce redundancy and clarify questions. Additionally, various questions previously asked during the check-in process are now asked in the application to improve your check-in experience. • How we collect information regarding medications has been updated in the online application to streamline the process for individuals attending multiple sessions throughout the summer. Medication information will be collected both from a physician medication list as well as a separate medication module in the online application. Other highlights and reminders regarding Summer Camp 2019 include: • Adventure Trip opportunities have been expanded based on demand.
NEW FOR 2019!
In 2019 we will offer 12 trips vs. five offered in 2018. Trips will now be targeted to beginning, intermediate, or advanced experience levels. Please see page 7 for more information. • Deposits are required for private paying clients. Clients paying with waivered or county funds, as well as Adoption Assistance are not directly responsible for paying a deposit. However, in the event of a cancellation, participants/guardians will be billed according to our cancellation policy (available on our website), application, and catalog on page 4. Clients responsible for paying a deposit will not have their application processed until a full deposit is received. • Participant Care is at our core. As a result, we wish to remind you we require an annual physical and physician medication list to attend a camp session. • Financial Assistance is a benefit in choosing the True Friends family of services. True Friends offers a limited financial assistance program to help those in financial need attend a camping session. Our finance team is available to discuss payment plans, financial assistance, and other funding avenues available to you to pay for camp. If you have any questions about the application contact the Customer Relations team at 952.852.0101 or registration@truefriends.org. If you have questions regarding payments or financial assistance contact the Finance Team at 952.852.0101 ext. 360 or payments@truefriends.org. We look forward to seeing you this summer! In friendship,

TERING FOR CAMP
SUPPORTING CAMPERS FOR A SUCCESSFUL EXPERIENCE True Friends partners with families and guardians to make each camper’s experience successful. In order for us to do this we need guardians and families to provide extensive information about each camper. True Friends also acknowledges not all campers are appropriate for the “camp-type” setting in which the program is provided. True Friends is a licensed home and community based basic support service; we are not an intensive or crisis service organization. Therefore, True Friends reserves the right to deny services to campers who we believe pose a safety threat to themselves, other campers, and/or employees.
Care Ratios Care ratios and session costs are based on care needs. Often staff-to-camper ratios in a camp setting differ from daily living care ratios. If you’d like help determining your care ratio, please refer to our care ratio guidelines below or contact our staff. Please understand the final decision regarding an individual's care ratio will be determined by True Friends staff.
High Care Support: 1:1
• May have frequent verbal or physical outbursts that require staff intervention • May be unable to communicate needs • May have trouble participating in a group setting or display inappropriate behaviors • May need extensive support with medical care needs • Needs “eyes on” supervision during awake hours. The True Friends staffing model does not offer overnight awake staff. Staff assist campers with typical needs during the night. • Uses a manual wheelchair and needs staff support to propel outside buildings • May need total support with activities of daily living
Medium Care Support: 1:3
• May have occasional verbal or physical outbursts that require staff intervention • May have trouble with large social environments, but does well in small groups • May need some support with medical care needs • May need verbal support with activities of daily living • Easily accepts support from staff
Low Care Support: 1:5
• Can respond well to new and unfamiliar situations • Can enjoy group settings • Is independent with activities of daily living • Easily communicates wants and needs • Easily accepts support from staff

MOTIVATED, CARING, AND HIGHLY TRAINED STAFF Our amazing staff are the reason campers love True Friends Camps. We hand pick our team from hundreds of applicants from across the country and the world; in 2018, 12 states and 9 countries to be exact! Our outstanding staff members are college students, young professionals, and teachers who share a passion for working with people of all walks and rolls of life. No matter their previous experience, True Friends staff attend a rigorous week of in-person training and 12 hours of online courses to prepare them to care for the individual needs of each camper. Staff are trained by our Registered Nurses and camping professionals; from verbal cues to total assistance, our staff are here to help parents and caregivers sleep easy and give campers a positive camp experience like no other.
A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF CAMP Every day is a new adventure at True Friends Camps. Each of our four locations deliver quality care, trained staff, amazing opportunities for fun, growth, and friendships. Our camp managers and their teams are dedicated to providing positive, life-changing experiences. Whether you have been attending a True Friends Camp for years or if you are just entertaining the idea, we know the choice to send your loved one to camp is done with great care. In order to paint a more complete picture of True Friends Camp services, below are some of our intentional program elements.
CAMP LIFE AND CABIN PLACEMENTS Our camp managers, with the help of their seasonal leadership team, read each camper application in order to create an environment for success. Cabins are assigned with session, gender, age, sensory needs, and routine in mind. Staff live in the cabins with campers to provide the highest level of care. For those campers who need repositioning or bathroom reminders during the night, the cabin staff will create a rotating schedule amongst the cabin team to ensure our campers unique needs are fulfilled. Staff will get up to attend to homesickness, illness, and personal care assistance, but True Friends Camps do not provide 24-hour awake staff.
HEALTH CARE The care of our campers is our number one priority. Each of our camps have a team of Camp Nursing Assistants. These high-level medical and nursing students pass medications, are on site 24 hours a day, have advanced training in first aid, and give out popsicles on hot days. If you are going on one of the Adventure Trips, you will be in the hands of a staff member who is a Wilderness First Responder.
SPECIAL DIETS We know camp is a change of scenery, but that does not mean it has to be a complete lifestyle change. Our fantastic kitchen team will meet your camper’s dietary needs. Meals are served at 8:00 or 8:30 a.m. (depending on location), 12:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and the majority of special diet requirements can be met on-site or on a trip program. 6

ARTS AND FISHING CAMPS
courage north
Located in the beautiful Paul Bunyan Forest, near Itasca State Park, this historic camp adds that “up north feeling to everything you do. Camp Courage North promotes a tight-knit family atmosphere, and many opportunities for independence and leadership development. Meals are enjoyed outside under towering white and red pines and at night there is nothing cozier than time spent by the fire in our charming lakeside log cabins.
In addition to all of the other great activities available at Courage North, this session provides tons of extra opportunities to spend time working on amazing art projects, fishing for walleye, or enjoying other exciting waterfront activities such as swimming, tubing, and kayaking. All experience levels are welcome. Whether you want quiet relaxation or outrageous adventures, this is the program for you. Arts and Fishing Camp has separate youth and adult sessions available.
BRAIN GAINS This session is designed for adults with mild to moderate brain injuries. Have fun while attending groups led by skilled therapists from Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute. Work on memory, time management, problem solving strategies, coping and social skills. Campers also enjoy traditional camp and outdoor activities while increasing social and cognitive capacity.
