‘Heights of great men reach and kept were not attained by sudden flight but they while their companions slept were tolling upward through the night’... Henry Wadsworth Longfellow When I decided to do a magazine for my Media Project it was just a random thought, I had no knowledge of Marijauna except that its a band plant but clearly popular among the Jamaican population. I wanted to explore the plant and learn more about it, and go beyond its physical surface and just gain knowledge. From my research at the National Library I’ve learnt alot about Marijuana from its very existence to where it is now. I hope by producing this magazine people will gain knowledge about the plant as I did and appreciate its useful nature..

High grades Marijuana is apart of the Cannabis family. It is a flowering plant that has three types which includes the ‘Cannabis Satavia’, ‘Cannabis Indica’ and the ‘Cannabis Rudalis’ (a mixture of Satavia and Indica).
Cannabis Satavia are usually tall with leaves that are narrow and far apart on their branches. They can grow up 20ft high and takes 16days to become fit. Satavia makes its user feel energetic and can be used to treat cerebral, spacey and hallucinagenic conditions.
Cannabis indica are usually short and have closer branches with thicker leaves. Indica takes up to 8 weeks to become fit. It can be used to treat a condition called ‘couch lock’. It also relaxes its user.

How Weed Grows
6
Marijuana is very easy to grow, it can grow in most climates, however it adabts best to a more tropical climate. Like other plants marijuana needs sunlight, water and nutrients from soil to grow. It grows well with sunlight and needs alot of water until it reach its flowering state. When cultivating marijuana one should consider the amount of water use to water the plant as too much water will kill the plant. Marijuana grows very fast and can take up to 8 weeks to grow while others may take up to 16 weeks to grow.

n Jamaica Marijuana was manifested as a folk medicine. Its made into tea, taken as tonic and is even applied as ointment for certain conditions. Some people even uses it for baking or to even make soup. There are others who smoke this herb for recreational purposes as it makes them feel ‘good’. The use Marijuana is also expressed in some clothing; dressed in garments that has the leaf of the plant or quotes promoting it. Marijuana plays a significant role in the Rastafarian culture. They use this plant for religious purposes. Rastas describes Marijuana as the ‘healing of the nation’, the ‘wisdom weed’ and as an ‘exilir vitae’.

he Rastafari Movement was started in Jamaica by Lenard Howell (The Gong) the year 1930. Howell started this movement when Hallie Selasie was crownded ‘Kings of Kings, Lords of Lords, Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judea on November 2, 1930. He saw him as the returned Christ and as such started this movement in his honor. Occupy Pinnacle is where Lenard Howell was based. Marijuana was being used as a non-spiritual herb before the 1930s. When the movement was started in the 1930 the rastas use it was a sacrimental herb. In cermonies they smoke it using the Chalice/Chilom Pipe. The chalice can be made from anything, all it needs is a vacuum, hose and water (which is used to purify the herb). When using the chalice they sit in a circular form and pass it around in a circle to be used among the group. They also smoke the marijuana as a cigarette.

Facts
Marijuana’s harms have been proved scientifically. In the 1960s, many people believed that marijuana was harmless. Today we know that marijuana is dangerous than previously believed.
In 1972, after reviewing scientific evidence, the National Comission of Marijuana and drug abuse concluded that while marijuana was not entirely safe, its dangers have been over stated.
Marijuana is highly addictive. Long-term marijuana users experience physical dependence and withdrawal, and often need professional drug treatment to break their marijuana habits.
Most people who smoke marijuana smoke it occasionally. Some people who smoke marijuana heavily stop without difficulty. It doesn’t cause physical dependence nor cause withdrawal symptoms.
Marijuana kills brain cells. If used overtime, marijuana permanently alters brain structure and function, causing memory loss, personality deterioration, and reduced productivity.
None of the Medical tests currently used to detect brain damage in humans have found harm from marijuana, even from long term high dose use.
People are unable to to think rationale and intelligrnyly while under the influence of marijuana. Marijuana usage makes it hard for people to concentrate and results in memory impairment.
Marijuana, although it temporary changes thoughts there is no evidence that heavy usage of marijuana impairs memory permanently.

arijuana can be used as a form of medicine for certain illnesses. Some of these illnesses includes Migraine Headaches, Glaucoma, Asthma, as well Nausea and Vomiting caused by Chemotherapy. Although there is no clinical data for the use of marijuana for migraine, it has been proposed to be used in many occasions. In the earlier years marijuana was prescribed for asthma. Studies done by the University of the West Indies Mona, Jamaica has shown that ‘Asmasol’ an extract from Marijuana can be used to treat coughs, colds and bronchial asthma. in breathing within 30mins after dosage. Migraines are chronic headaches that causes serve pains that can last for days. It is very common among affects roughly 18% of women and 6% of men. Marijuana has a substance in it called ‘cannaninoids’ that are useful for treating migraines. Marijuana has anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and anti-nausea properties, and is good for relieving muscle cramps that also comes with migraines. Inhalation of vaporized cannabis, as a preferable alternative to smoking, can produce relief more rapidly.

Glaucoma is the most common cause for blindness around the world. It is a progressive disorder that causes where the optic nerve is degenerated, which results in the deterioration of the visual field then eventually blindness. Marijuana is said to be effective in treating glaucoma. It is more effective when it is administered orally, intravenously or by inhalation. Marijuana also reduce blood pressure, palpitations as well as psychotropy in glaucoma patients.
The use of chemotherapeutic drugs results in nausea and vomiting. Marijuana can then be considered as a method to combat this issue. Studies have shown that cancer patients suffer less from nausea and vomiting whenever they smoke marijuana. There are two drugs that are developed from marijuana which can be used to treat nauseaand vomiting caused from cancer treatments; they are Marinol and Cesamet.
Marinol are gelatin capsules that contains delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol which is useful for treating nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy. Cesamet is a synthetic cannabinoid which are taken orally for nausea and vomiting.
