detected under the nipple and the areola? This year JEP and WKPP hosted its very own pink week from October 22-26, to remind staff and the public about the importance of supporting this initiative as well as to be more aware of its symptoms and the risks associated. Here’s a recap of how we spent our pink week:
These are just a few facts shared among staff and the public in honour of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Jamaica Energy Partners has contributed significantly to this worldwide initiative and, for over ten years, has donated to the Jamaica Cancer Society to increase awareness, fund breast cancer research and in support of persons battling the gruesome disease. In 2017 JEP/WKPP also assisted two persons with the disease - Mrs Carol Harris and Ms Lavern Howell and received reports that they are doing well and cancer free.

1. Each morning, a member of the CSR committee would present on breast cancer to dispel a few myths, inform staff about the signs of breast cancer and what to do if it is suspected.
2. A “Facts and Myths corner was also created to educate staff about the popular myths associated with the disease. 3. We concluded with an exciting evening of trivia and quizzes to reinforce all that was discussed and to see just how much everyone remembered. 4. Staff was also treated to mouthwatering pink treats and also had received prizes for their participation.

Breast Cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, and it is important to note that men are at risk too.

In light of this, let us play our part in the fight against this dreadful disease - take some time to educate others by sharing all you learned during JEP’s Pink Week and support a friend or family member who may be battling breast cancer or needs guidance on how to deal with having a suspicion.

NATIONAL TREE PLANTING DAY
National Tree Planting Day has for several years been a major part of JEP and WKPP’s CSR portfolio. The companies have focused substantial efforts towards preserving our island’s natural resources through various environmental initiatives including participating in this initiative geared towards a more sustainable Jamaica. We pride ourselves in being good corporate citizens, as such, yearly, JEP and WKPP employees take time out to participate in tree planting exercises to improve the island’s natural biodiversity, and to reduce carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the air. Since 2011, both companies have planted over 1000 trees at the Holywell Recreational

Jamaica Society for the
Blind
“The worse thing is to be born sighted, but lack vision”
- Helen Keller. These words are inscribed on the walls of the Jamaica Society for the Blind and are quite fitting mainly because unscrupulous persons use their vulnerabilities against them. Theft is a major issue that workers and students of the NGO have to contend with frequently, and the assumption that the institution only offers remedial intervention for blind people is far from the truth. It is for this reason, Executive Director, Conrad Harris, sought assistance from JEP to help with the acquisition of a camera system to improve the visibility of target areas. JEP donated and installed the cameras as well as purchased a monitor to allay the fears of those persons attending the institution. JEP hopes that with this installation, incidents of theft and illicit activities will be reduced.

Although all eight teams delivered their arguments coherently and with confidence, the judges awarded St. Andrew Technical High School; Wolmer’s Boys School; Dunoon Technical Park High School and St. George’s College victors in the feat. WKPP’s New Business Development Engineer, Delano Mighty, was the moderator for all four matches, while internal judges Kevin Francis, WKPP Property & Special Services Manager; Jermaine Scott, WKPP Mechanical Supervisor; and Conrad Miller, JEP Technical Services Manager (Acting) ensured that the teams’ arguments were technically sound.
Administrative Assistant, Shalene Davis, hands over the 1st Runner-up trophy to St. George’s College on behalf of sponsor of the Energy Debating Competition, Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica.
St. George’s College (STGC) too reserved their spot in the final match after opposing the Natural Gas moot. STGC defeated Wolmer’s Boy’s School following the delivery of intriguing and well-researched arguments about Natural Gas as well as a solid rebuttal regarding their stance that it is not the best source of alternative energy.

Dunoon Park Technical High School vs St. George’s College
After two rounds of successful matches and impressive speeches from the energy debating teams, the month-long competition concluded with the final match and awards ceremony at the Spanish Court Hotel. On October 18, Dunoon Park Technical High School and St. George’s College vied for the first place trophy arguing the moot: “Be it resolved: Jamaica is not doing enough to protect the environment.” Off to a great start, the first and second speakers from both teams presented their arguments seamlessly! The spirited team from Dunoon Park Technical High School provided facts as to why Jamaica is doing enough to protect the environment, while St. George’s College countered the argument, emphasizing that this is not so. Following the first half of yet another exciting match, it was time for the teams to prepare their rebuttals and it was soon time for the moment everyone was waiting for.
