The Art of DESIGN 18
Holiday House is a unique installation of designed spaces that transforms a home from its former life. Each designer creates an aesthetic themed around a holiday or special moment that has inspired them. As an observer moves about the home, there is an energy that leaves a lasting impression. Therefore, Interior Design becomes livable Art. Every year the Breast Cancer Research Foundation teams with Iris Dankner, the Founder and Creative Director of Holiday House. As a breast cancer survivor for twenty one years, Iris had a desire to combine her passion for design with an event to benefit women’s issues. Holiday House has grown over the years to include showhouses in New York City, the Hamptons and London.

Brilliantly talented designers, sponsors, donors, manufacturers, contractors, and more come together to create a magnificent showhouse in this philanthropic event to benefit breast cancer research awareness, research and treatment. Holiday House celebrates great design and in the words of Design Chair Thom Filicia, gives a “toast to living life as if each day were a holiday.

HOLIDAY HOUSE
2018
As you enter the mansion on the upper east side of Manhattan, your eyes begin to dance the Tango. This titillating sensation can be overwhelming for some and for others it is just another day of work. The entry garden immediately transforms you from the hard concrete jungle of New York City to a comforting, yet structured romance of home. Upon stepping into the sultry foyer, you take care of formalities such as checking tickets and your coat. Meanwhile, the glow emanating from the main stair is luring you away as if to say, “come see me now”. It makes perfect sense to descend the soft winding staircase, with its plush ombre carpeting, to the cellar floor where your journey begins. Before your feet can touch the last step, your soul is pulled to the opulent wine cellar in front of you. Inspired by an old Dutch masters still life painting, the intimate design aptly named “A Moment in Time”, captures the finer moments in an escape from reality, time and the chaos of life. Although you hesitate to leave this wonderland, there is a yearning to experience more fascinating spaces, knowing this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Fun awaits around the next corner in the Laundry Room. Bubbles are everywhere! A delightful space that implores us to enjoy the little things in life. As you wait for your clothes in the dryer, why not play a game on the other end of the hall? Enter the Family Game Room, filled with an eclectic collection of furnishings and pieces from a well-traveled family life. The warmth of the space radiates with southern hospitality style. Before ascending the lush staircase, stop in the Powder Room to freshen up. The tailored geometric wood veneer on the walls are juxtaposed with a reindeer head encased in shimmering rhinestones. A perfect balance that works well with the other rooms, keeping this floor playful and well designed. It is almost lunchtime and the Kitchen is on the next floor up. As one of the most popular rooms in any home, it is important for a kitchen to function well for eating, entertaining and relaxing. And you can do it all in this candy themed sophisticated space. When you are too tired to clean up, the cool grey glass cabinetry makes it easy for this kitchen to always appear clean with its impressive minimalistic hide away doors. For a larger dinner party, you can collect your guests in the Dining Room just steps away.

Welcome to the Living Room, a showcase of contemporary vintage, where old becomes new. Each piece of furniture is a work of art in and of itself. The walls are the blank canvas, framing each artful specimen. Just off to the side, enter into a theatrical bar wrapped in luxurious backlit drapery, making the room appear to hover in space. console table is softened by the warm tones of tufted high back chairs, like those your grandfather had in his study. Pull a glass from the pinstripe textured cabinet and mix yourself a well-deserved drink. Carry on to the Library, filled with twentieth century art and objects. Here you can enjoy parlour games with your friends, while sipping your classic cocktails. Muse over the last century of design as each object speaks for a particular decade, from art deco of the twenties to the gigolo style of the eighties. As it gets later in the evening, it is time to send your guests upstairs and for you to retire to your Master Suite. Gather with your love in the Master Sitting Room, surrounded by a union of modernity and tradition. Chinese elegance is paired with the clean lines of mid-century modern furniture and delicate ornamental porcelain. This comfortable balance is a perfect prelude to settling in for the evening. Leisurely undress in the rich chocolate closets of the Master Dressing Room. This sexy boudoir gives a nod to fashion by including walls hand painted by the most talented fashion illustrators. Your evening would not be complete without a shower for two, surrounded by icy blue marble framed by polished stainless steel trim. If tonight you are single, soak in the “Sweetness of Idleness, then wrap yourself in luxurious Frette before laying in bed.

The Master Bedroom is the ultimate getaway for a princess. Woven blue silk drapes the walls to create a haven of dreams. Crystal teardrops hang effortlessly from the silver chandelier centered in the coffered ceiling. White leaves flutter up the wall over a warm glow, giving you the most restorative sleep of your life. Your friends are still having a party upstairs. Entering the fourth floor of bedrooms, they are greeted by the “Iconic Rock Lounge. The rock and roll artwork sets the tone for a cool vibe with modern furnishings in metallic velvet. Fortunate for you, the ceilings in this guest lounge are sheathed in sound absorbing cork! It is time to draw straws to see who gets which bedroom.

Guest bedroom one uses high contrast and bold statement pieces that leave a striking and memorable impression. A mosaic portrait deep with color hangs against white walls laced with newspaper grey branches. Feather shades softly illuminate the room as heavy tailored roman shades keep out unwanted light from the outdoors. An English rose garden in guest bedroom two regulates an amicable tension with the modern wrought iron and brass four poster bed. Mixing old and new, city and country, rigid and organic, grants this room the title of “Modern Royal”. The fourth floor main Bedroom is like a cabin retreat with modern amenities. Navy blue and white plaid bedding sits against a laser cut wood wall in a floral pattern, stained a calming pale blue. Off-white built-ins flank a smart mirror, the future surface that blends screen with data. The masculinity of navy is softened by blush accents to create an inner “Awakening”. As you move towards the Kids Room, the geometric wood veneer originally seen in the Powder Room pops up again in the hall, tying in the overall home design. It is a fitting backdrop for the ornate beveled glass full height mirror held up by two ivory tusks.

Design elements in the Kids Room are truly fit for a young boy transitioning to teen-hood. Wrapped in a rock climbing wall and ceiling, the bed hovers over a desk in the center of the room. Surrounding white walls are covered with hand painted graffiti in black, with illustrations of dinosaurs, spaceships, musical instruments and more. A custom built hairy monster sits in the corner as a friendly companion for a peaceful sleep. After waking the next day and eating a delicious breakfast, all convene at the top floor to go for a swim. This enlightening pool glistens in the sunshine due to the thousands of mosaic tiles in hues of blue, white and silver. Not a swimmer? Enjoy a steam shower or sauna, then watch the other swimmers from above in the loft. A black wire human form sits at the edge of the pool acting as a lifeguard of sorts. Silver leaf female forms are a modern depiction of the three wise monkeys. Before embarking on the day and leaving this fantasia of a home, why not enjoy a massage in the soothing environment of “The Salon of Relaxation? Luckily for you, a new experience awaits in the upcoming months ahead, when Holiday House is reimagined in The Hamptons, New York. Be sure to sign up for launch details at HolidayHouseHamptons.com.
