Publisher’s Letter Can you smell it? The sweet smell of summer. Saltwater, sunshine, and all that is divine. Toes in the sand, drink in your hand, and the possibilities of love. For many, school is over, and summertime means vacation. For others, there are half-day Fridays or three day weekends. Entire industries, including nature, respond alike when the hot weather comes about, even when working full weeks. No matter what the situation, there is a fire in all our bellies to get outside and enjoy everything that this earth has to offer. It is a naked truth and the fewer clothes we are wearing, seems we are happier! Coincidence? I think not. Summer is a time where we are fully connected to our primal being. We soak up as much as humanly possible, seeking ultimate fulfillment in all that we encounter. We want to dive into a pristine lake, ride the waves of the ocean, or float on our backs along a river; a purely subconscious longing to cure our blues. The influence of water is strong, and since more than seventy percent of our earthly home is covered in it, there is no wonder we are intrinsically connected to this amazing natural resource. Summer makes the songs in our hearts change. Extra daylight hours equates to pure energy for all. Animals breed and reproduce in the comfort of warmth. The heat from solar energy contributes to germination of seeds, essential to plant growth. Busy is the state of mind for every single life form. Let us take this newfound energy and use it to propel our dreams. We can make long-awaited changes happen with the power of our breath, allowing ourselves to bloom. It is time to create a fresh new skin, embellish our taste buds, embark on new adventures, and safely enjoy all this summer has to offer.

Safe Summer FUN... By Nick Yasinosky
“Better a thousand times careful than once dead. - Proverb

he warmer weather brings with it more outdoor activities and unfortunately, sometimes more injuries. Here are a few ways to prevent them from happening and enjoy the summer fun. Hot Stuff
In summer, we tend to be more social too. The overconsumption of alcohol before or during any activity, compounded with extreme heat, can quickly lead to dehydration. We must remember to integrate water consumption during these times and also be aware of others doing the same to help keep everyone safe.

One of the most common illnesses in the summer that can lead to injury is any heat-related illness. This is a combination of high heat, overexposure of sun, and dehydration. Symptoms can include nausea, dizziness, headaches, and confusion. The best way to prevent heat-related illness is to make sure that we keep our fluid intake up from the morning until the night every day. Limit sun exposure, especially during the highest times, which are 11am to 3pm and use a natural sunscreen to protect your skin.
HEALTH
Chill Out All too often, we hear about swimming injuries. Not being aware of the shallow depth of a pool or body of water can result in suffering a broken bone or neck after jumping in. Trying to swim in rough ocean water with rip currents while being intoxicated can lead to severe injury or worse, even death. We are saddened to hear of kids drowning because of the lack of supervision by adults either not paying attention or being distracted by having a good time. It is crucial to keep a watchful eye on kids while they are in the pool. Do not allow them to just dive in without knowing how deep the water is. Be aware of any posted notices on your local beaches and always listen to lifeguards on duty. Following these simple rules allows everyone to enjoy the freedom of swimming and dramatically reduces the possibilities of injuries. Summer is a
time of play for everyone...let’s make it a safe one for all!
Motor On ATV, jet ski, and boating accidents are ubiquitous in the summer. The combination of being inexperienced on any one of these motorized vehicles along with the consumption of alcohol can lead to severe injuries and possibly death. Lacerations, broken bones, and bruises are tied to the irresponsible behavior on these vehicles but can definitely be prevented. All these vehicles need are the driver’s full attention to safely navigate the rough terrain of rocks when riding an ATV or avoiding other sea vessels while boating and jet skiing on the water. Having proper instruction and experience on these small motor vehicles will ensure that you will be safe and able to enjoy the fun. Become familiar with any and all the safety rules and regulations of the vehicle you prefer, along with any state or county laws. Always wear protective clothing, devices, or safety gear to ensure the best experience possible on these wonderful power toys.

Playtime Summer sports, including soccer, tennis, volleyball, frisbee, golf, biking, hiking, running, baseball, are all great outdoor activities, but they do have their moments of people accruing injuries. The most common are sprained ankles or wrists, broken bones, pulled or spasmed muscles. Most of these injuries are a result of improper biomechanics or movement while executing a swing, a throw, or a stride. Not implementing the proper warm up by either doing drills, stretching, or mobility exercises can contribute to injuries. We can prevent these injuries by correctly warming up, stretching with either a static or dynamic approach or run through some mobility drills for any activity that is sports specific. These warmups or stretches are to ensure the body is and will be ready for said activities. Doing this, we also mentally warm up or gear up to be able to allow the body to

participate fully. This will significantly reduce the risk of sprains or muscle spasms. Pacing yourself while hiking will be safer than trying to complete a trail in record time. Jogging in place before playing any running game will allow the tendons, ligaments, and joints to acclimate to the aggressive forward lateral and reverse moves while increasing your mobility. Practice throws of a baseball or frisbee before throwing full speed. Going through the full range of motion for a golf swing at half speed then gradually picking it up to full speed will reduce the probability of any pulled or spasming muscles, especially in the back. Warming up is extremely important when playing any sport, even if just a leisurely game.
Enjoy All There is a focused and conscious way to help prevent some of the silly injuries that sometimes accrue while engaging in these fun summer activities. By implementing these simple but effective techniques, we can enjoy any of these activities to the fullest time and time again with no setbacks. We all would like to be able to enjoy the summer fun, so let’s put these ideas in motion and get out there!

POWER OF BREATH “Inhaling is what we do so we can exhale.” By Linda Lombardo
It took an audiobook by Brené Brown on a 5-hour road trip to central New York to understand the importance of breath and making time for ourselves. In her book, Braving the Wilderness, Brené Brown speaks of her meeting with Dr. Joan Halifax, Buddhist teacher, Zen priest, anthropologist, and pioneer in the field of end-of-life care. Brené commented that she planned to forego some rest and personal time at a conference because she felt an obligation to go to the meet and greet event. Dr. Halifax looked at her and said, “Tonight we will exhale and teach. Now it’s time to inhale. There is the inbreath, and there is the out-breath, and it’s easy to believe that we must exhale all the time, without ever inhaling. But the inhale is absolutely essential if you want to continue to exhale.” This brings me to summertime and those of us who may never stop to enjoy the season because we are too busy ‘exhaling.’ I recall a time when I was younger and in school. I used to long for Summer with eager anticipation because there was time off from school; planned time to relax and play. Years later, when I was no longer in school, I wondered one day why I was still so excited about summertime. After all, it wasn’t going to change anything for me. Full stop. What?? “Inhaling is what we do so we can exhale.” We are beings with seasons in our bodies and souls. We experience the rebirth of Spring after a long dormant Winter. We let go of our ‘leaves’ in the Fall, shedding what no longer serves us. How is it that we ignore the full bloom of Summer; the full expression of who we are? Where are we forgetting to inhale in order to exhale? “The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide world’s joy.” - Henry Ward Beeche This isn’t about being carefree and playful again … except when it is. Being outside when the sun offers its most ‘joy’ may include*:

• Reduced risk of developing type 2 diabetes. • Reduced cancer risk. Studies show that patients with higher vitamin D blood levels when diagnosed had nearly twice the survival rate of those with the lowest levels. • Likelihood of developing bone diseases and osteoporosis lessens. • Better eye health, especially when it comes to cataracts, and risk of macular degeneration. • A boost to our immunity systems and T cells. Also, benefits include improving our metabolic function, which helps fight obesity, lower blood pressure, reduced stroke risk, better sleep, lessen anxiety, and overall enhances our mood. Not everyone will experience every benefit, and some will always experience a certain number of its benefits.

Add to all that a forested environment and you’re surrounded by trees at the peak of their essential oil production; what science calls phytoncides. “Phyton” means “plant” in Latin, and “cide” means to exterminate. Phytoncides are the natural compound substance that a plant gives off to kill harmful microorganisms; insects and bacteria. Forest bathing enhances human natural killer cell activity and our body’s expression of anti-cancer proteins. Forest bathing also improves cognitive function, helping us think and plan better. This effect lasts for at least 7 days in our bodies after time spent in nature. In reality, phytoncides do not only exist in forests. They can be found in vegetables and fruit as well. But I’m not about to recommend that you walk through fields of garlic regularly, nor do I believe for one minute that you would follow that recommendation! So, getting back to Summer, sun, vitamin D and inhaling … Telling someone to get outside and play hardly ever works. We see it as time wasted, indulgent, and even a way to avoid getting things done. My

message to you is that getting outside, especially in the summertime at the height of ‘bloom’ is essential; critical to your wellbeing and your ability to get things done in a way that nurtures your body and soul, rather than puts you in deep distress or exhaustion. Where are your opportunities to get outside more and absorb some vitamin D and phytoncides, as well as general wellbeing from nature? It depends on who you are and what feels enjoyable and effortless to you. Here are some offerings: • Walk somewhere instead of driving. • Create a daily outdoor ‘sit spot’ at home to have your morning coffee or enjoy an evening glass of wine. Watch nature happen around you. • Take your lunch hour outside. Find a park or sit outside the workplace where there are trees and flowers. • Add leafy, green plants to your home or office or plant a small garden.

• Stop wherever you are and enjoy the sun on your face. Be grateful for something at that moment.
HEALTH
• Volunteer at an animal shelter to walk the dogs. • Read, eat, even take a nap outside. Create an enticing area and deck it out with things you love. • Join a Meetup group that hikes, walks, or meditates in nature. Make sure to go to the events. • Call a friend and visit nature centers and state parks; watch for all the events that are planned. • Look for family events at local arboretums, parks, and preserves. • Bring a ‘happy’ light to work. • Drink summertime-fruit-infused water. • Wear brighter colors. Be summertime. You’ll only do what feels natural to you, and that’s what play and enjoyment are all about. Summertime is a season in our lives that expresses who we are in full bloom. You deserve that. We deserve to experience you like that. Last words. Always hydrate. Avoid full mid-day sun if you’re sun-sensitive or wear a hat (as long as you make it a fun hat). Early mornings and evening sunsets are fabulous times to be outdoors in nature. Walk among the trees, share some reciprocal inhaling and exhaling with them. Let your summertime bloom!

PERSONAL GROWTH
Subconscious Flow By April Diane
Why is Change so Hard?
When you know better, you do better. Is it really that simple? If so then maybe the real challenge is in the “knowing,” not the doing. Not talking about just in the “knowing” that something needs to be done or what to do. The real challenge may also be in knowing that you are worth doing it for, and then believing that you can actually make the change. All of this, energizing within you the courage to take the necessary steps. Finally, allowing change to actually take place, equipping you with the ability to DO BETTER. I don’t know about you but just explaining that made me want to run back to my old familiar habits. I mean at least you don’t have to think about the old habits. They are already programmed. The issue is that once you know that something needs to change and you don’t make the changes, you may end up kicking yourself in a self-sabotaging kind of way.
You see, I had to stop judging and start witnessing. In witnessing, I found compassion for the insecurities that were making me behave in ways that were not serving my highest good. I saw myself the way I see other people struggling with a learned way of being. I saw the beliefs behind my behavior. I also saw that these beliefs were not of my own discovery; these beliefs were things I was taught or learned when I was younger.

Photograph by Erwan Hesry
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve kicked myself for not seeing that a change needed to take place sooner especially when the need for the change was staring me in the face, and showing up in ways that were harmful to my health. In fact, it wasn’t until I stopped kicking myself that I was actually able to hold the space for me to do something different.
PERSONAL GROWTH
And even though I no longer or perhaps never believed them, I was still operating out of the false ideas. This awareness led me to learn about the power of the subconscious mind and also why it is so hard for people to change. Without awareness, the subconscious mind holds us captive to the past. The moment you try to do something different, you begin to feel really uncomfortable as the subconscious digs in its heals dragging you back to what it believes to be true. Like a familiar person who will listen to you but also treats you poorly. Change can be difficult, but with the right formula and a clear intention, change is not impossible. I invite you to hold the space for yourself to know better so you can do better and be an expert on YOU.

TRAVEL
MAGIC OF MALTA by Madeline Tersigni
The Alluring Paradise of the Mediterranean
Since summer is almost here, most of you will be spending your vacation flocking to the Mediterranean in hopes of having some fun in the most beautiful places in Europe, but while they are all gorgeous, they are also costly. I know that you probably have your heart set on spending a week or two in Santorini, soaking up the sun and trying to find a Greek romance. Or perhaps you wanted to travel to the Amalfi coast to feast into the best Italian food while tipping your toes into their crystal blue waters. The problem with these places, ESPECIALLY this time of the year, is that they know their worth. The locals know how much tourists are willing to pay so they will charge you 15 euros for a small plate of pasta, just because they can. Want to go snorkeling or take a boat out to the middle of the sea? Forget it! It’s not going to happen, not unless you want to max out your credit card. There is a solution to all of this; however, a magical place that has just as much beauty and wonders as these overrated tourists spots, that costs half of what you would typically pay. There is no question that the country of Malta is where you want to be this summer. Malta is a small country in the central of the Mediterranean. It is smack in the middle of Sicily and the North African coast. It is primarily known for its gorgeous beaches and for historical sites which are directly related to the succession of rulers within the country. If you travel to the main capital, Valletta, you can see grandfortresses, megalithic temples, and the Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, a subterranean complex of halls and burial chambers that were first built all the way back in 4000 B.C.

TRAVEL
However, if you really have no interest in studying history while you’re on vacation, Malta still has some of the best beach spots in the world. Golden Bay has turquoise blue water that seems to never get too cold, with bright white sand, totally uncommon to the rest of the Mediterranean. Snorkeling is made more accessible with a quick trip to either Gozo or Comino, boasting the most beautiful coral reefs that you will ever see! And the prices, ridiculously inexpensive. While traveling to this overlooked country, I never paid more than 25 euros to go take a boat out or spend an entire day snorkeling. While in Comino, I highly recommend visiting the Blue Lagoon. Its name was given due to the apparent fact that the water is the bluest sea you will ever see in your life. Water does not get any more crystal clear than at the Blue Lagoon. Even though it does not have a lot of sand, mostly consisting of rocky terrain, the area makes up for the lack of smoothness with its concession stands filled with incredible food and drinks. The best of which being, the Pineapple stand, where the owner makes you whatever tropical mixed drink your little heart desires, inside of a giant pineapple. The best part is the first drink is half off! Another perk of staying in Malta is that it is very safe. The crime rate for the entire country is low, and the chances of you getting harassed or robbed are significantly less than if you were staying in another popular place. Additionally, everyone speaks English in Malta. While their first language is a mix of Italian and African, their second most common tongue is English, and there isn’t one person on that island that wouldn’t be able to communicate with you. The one and only downfall, for those of you who are American, that they drive on the opposite side of the road like in Britain so you must be mindful while crossing the street and if you plan on renting a car. There is no good reason not to plan a vacation in Malta. It’s inexpensive, absolutely gorgeous, and you will have the time of your life! So book your flights now!

SELF CARE
Fresh New Skin by Roberta Perry
Exfoliation is the art of taking off dead skin. It’s one of the best things you can do for your body and oh how great it feels! I have said this
on many occasions, “Drink copious amounts of water and eat healthy food, which will help your skin from the inside out.” However regular, gentle exfoliation, in my opinion, is the number one way to keep skin looking fabulous. Traditional soaps and cleansers do a good job of cleaning the skin, but exfoliation does more.
When you put body lotion on top of dead skin cells, they can only do part of their job. When you moisturize on top of exfoliated skin, you are nourishing the healthier skin cells because you polished the dead ones off. Shaving skin that has not been adequately prepared can cause undue irritation and razor burn. This is another great thing that exfoliating before shaving is good for. Especially when it’s an oil-based scrub because then you can shave immediately after rinsing off. Think about it this way, the skin has to shed. Mother Nature does it for you roughly every 28-35 days. Now if you polish off the dead skin more often than Mother Nature, your skin will forever be fresher and smoother. Doesn’t that make sense? The reason is simple. You are bringing all those new skin cells forward and evenly getting rid of the rest. And when

SELF CARE
you do it faster than it usually would shed itself, your skin never goes back to being dry and flaky. Ahhhh! Now, there are many ways to exfoliate, and all have great benefits. Here is a list of the most commonly used methods to shed the dead stuff: Washcloth - The way most people exfoliate without even thinking about it. Generally used with a soap or shower gel, a washcloth gently gets some of the dead skin in the process. Not a wrong choice but it must be used with products. Make sure you wash and dry the cloth after each use, so it does not grow mold or mildew. Loofah – A loofah sponge is excellent for stubborn callous and rough spots on feet, but I would caution using it on the rest of the body because it can be overly harsh. There are different types, and I recommend the natural ones over synthetic. The downside is cleanliness. The little holes all over the sponge can lock-in moisture, which encourages the growth of fungus and bacteria. Loofah sponges should be removed from the bathroom after use and thoroughly dried. I would not use a loofah on your face.
Photograph by Channey
SELF CARE
Pumice stone – Similar to a loofah in terms of recommended use, but created from cooled lava, pumice is fabulous for removing callous from feet. It can also be ground down and mixed into a more liquid type of exfoliating products, because it won’t melt in the mix and will retain its abrasion. Chemical exfoliants come two ways, AHAs and BHAs. They each have different properties. AHAs, like glycolic acid, exfoliates the skin’s surface and dissolve dead skin cells and congestion. BHAs, on the other hand, like salicylic acid, has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, which can be beneficial to those prone to breakouts. These can be wonderful but make sure you select the proper one for your skin type as they can over irritate the skin. Follow all directions. Salt Scrubs – Salt scrubs contain various minerals, which can help promote circulation and reduce inflammation. They can be detoxifying as well. Fabulous; however, we have all heard the expression “salt in the wound,” so if the skin has any irritations or cuts, the salt will make them go Ouch! That is why salt is never my favorite exfoliator, but it is fabulous as a soak. Salt scrubs tend to be courser and should be used only on the body and not on the face or private parts.
SELF CARE
Finally, to my favorite!! Sugar Scrubs! Sugar is non-burning, nonirritating, and suitable for all skin types. It can be used on the entire body, including the face and sensitive area. Another reason why sugar is so wonderful as an exfoliator is that it is a natural humectant, meaning it draws moisture from the environment into the skin. This means that when you apply products with sugar or sugar derivatives, they’ll actually help keep moisture within the skin. Cool, right? Sugar is a natural source of glycolic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), like the chemical peels mentioned above. AHAs penetrate the skin and break down the bond of the skin cells, encouraging cell turnover and generating fresher, younger-looking skin. Turbinado sugar, which is used in some scrubs on the market, can be coarser, so I recommend this particular sugar to be used on feet and more calloused areas. Fine granulated sugar, however, has smaller particles and so it makes an excellent topical exfoliator for all over the body. Whipping the sugar with natural oils makes for a body polish, a cleanser and a moisturizer all in one. Easy, peasy, and great for the skin! Photograph by Marvin Meyer

SELF CARE
You can make a simple sugar scrub at home using common ingredients found in your cabinet. Here is a great recipe to start with: 1 cup White Table Sugar 2 Tbsp. Olive Oil 2 Tbsp. Grapeseed Oil 2 Tbsp. Coconut Oil (depending on what is available) 4-6 drops of essential oil or 6 drops highquality fragrance oil Put sugar in mixing cup and add the oils one at a time. Stir the mix thoroughly. Once all the sugar has been blended into the oil, add the drops of fragrance. Start with less, so the scent builds. If you want an oilier scrub, add another tablespoon of Olive Oil. If you want a grittier scrub, add 1 tablespoon less. Moisten skin before applying your sugar scrub. Gently exfoliate the skin in circular motions. Rinse with warm water and say hello to your Fresh New Skin! After discovering the benefits of skin exfoliation, Roberta created her formulation with botanical oils and sugar. In 2006, she and her late sister, Michelle, started ScrubzBody™ in a garage, growing to a fabulous storefront in Farmingdale, NY, where her products are still handcrafted in small batches. CUISINE
Chimichurri Sauce serves 10-12 people
Ingredients: 1 tablespoon of finely chopped oregano
Chimichurri sauce, an amazing condiment to be used on steak, fish, sausages, chicken, and anything that comes off the grill this summer. Also excellent for a marinade. The beautiful thing about this recipe is that the ingredients don’t change but you can pretty much “eyeball” everything and purée or chop to your preference. In my recipe, I use a food processor. You can also use a blender on low or a mortar and pestle.
2 bunches of cilantro tops, chopped finely 1 bunch of Italian parsley tops, chopped finely (save the stems of both for stocks and soups!) 1/4 cup of red wine vinegar 1 cup of good quality virgin olive oil 3 garlic cloves minced
Directions:
Combine all and mix thoroughly in a food processor on pulse or medium setting for 10-30 seconds (or until shallot and garlic are thoroughly mixed in), and you are ready to serve as beautiful condiment to add a fantastic flavor and elevate almost any protein. Drizzle on steak or serve as a side dish for your guests to take as much as they want.
1 shallot diced 1 teaspoon of red chili flakes Salt to taste

THE ARTS
Gallery On A River Architecture is a form of Art that allows the recipient to obtain an immersive experience. Becoming engaged in a space embraces all the senses and can stir up an emotional response. Such is the case when one embarks on this fantastic yacht trip on the Hudson River in New York City, but in an entirely different way. In most galleries, the viewer is inside a building, looking at the artwork. The enclosure is the driving force steering the neural responses. Lighting manipulates how one visualizes the art piece, while artificial cooling or heating creates a comfortability factor for the viewer. Music, most likely selected by the gallery owner, plays in the background and either is pleasurable or annoying for the attendees. Musty air and other foul odors can even play a part in diminishing the full enjoyment of the artwork.
Photographs by Jennifer Wojcieski
But on the river, mother nature is the captain. The architecture is now the artwork on display, and how one receives, depends on an innate interaction with the environment. Sunlight and shade playfully dance on three-dimensional structures, allowing one to see them literally “in a different light.” Soothing sounds of the water rippling and babbling are like a familiar lullaby, helping the body relax, resulting in focused attention and pure enjoyment. The salty misty air is natural ion therapy, scientifically proven to clear the mind. One is brought back to a primal state of free thinking and feeling. Imagine viewing Art on your own terms? We all can by loosening the societal restrictions on the name “gallery.” Instead, take a trip down the river and view the artful nature of architecture differently. We recommend the Classic Harbor Line as your guide. www.truelifestylemagazine.com 35
