True North Textiles is a boutique weaving studio producing original rugs that experiment with contemporary color and texture while remaining reverent to time-honored traditions. We specialize in working closely with designers and homeowners to develop palettes and patterns that integrate effortlessly and beautifully into interior design schemes. Nestled in the picturesque mountains of Bellingham, Washington, True North Textiles employs local artisans to meticulously hand weave each carpet. Working on traditional American-made looms, we weave each rug entirely from carefully sourced, domestic materials. By eliminating the delays of international delivery and the possibility of inconsistent materials, we are able to produce gorgeous, bespoke rugs made entirely in the United States.

At True North Textiles, we pride ourselves on creating timeless pieces that will be loved for years to come.

Rooted in a deep reverence for materials and process, the skilled artisans at True North produce work of art rugs that are completely made to order, whether the design inspiration comes from your fabric or wallpaper swatch, or from our own exclusive design collections.

Custom

Collections

True North’s bespoke products are the result of intense collaboration between buyer and weaver. Our goal is to create a finished art piece that becomes an intrinsic part of your home and lifestyle. Starting from a swatch, image or other source of inspiration, we work closely with designers and homeowners to craft custom palettes and designs that effortlessly coexist with, unite or punctuate existing interior design schemes.

Designs within our past and present collections are the result of the creative exploration of weaving colors, structures and textures. Each of these cherished designs can be customized to match nearly any color or size needs, or can serve as a starting point for your own new and unique pattern. Our latest collection is a return to fundamentals, a play of repeating rectangles and basic shapes. Inspired by the architectural forms witnessed on our travels, these patterns call to mind order, harmony and symmetry in uncertain times.

PROCESS The meticulous process of creating a handwoven rug is detailed, arduous and, above all, incredibly rewarding. With a deep respect for materials and artistry, our commitment to handweaving ensures that each piece is a truly unique work of art, elevated above trends and always in style. Working with technology both old and new, our design process may start on the computer, but construction is entirely carried out by hand, on our American-made looms.

Each custom rug starts with your specific and personal inspiration. We work from fabrics, yarns, paint and wallpaper samples, or simply from an idea, sketch or memory. We are happy to produce digital pattern renderings and custom strike-offs, or samples, to demonstrate color, pattern and seaming options.

Once the final design, materials and size are determined, the centuries-old process of rug making begins with dressing the loom, tying up the yarns and weaving. Finished pieces are closely inspected for loose loops or broken yarns. Rugs wider than 12 feet are carefully seamed by hand, as are borders. The finished product is then carefully blocked into shape, and then finished with jute and latex backing.

The detailed task of handweaving a room-sized rug can take a team of several artisans up to eight days to complete

AMY JO TYSON The Story of a Maker

Inspired at an early age to interpret the world around her in terms of pattern and color, True North Textiles founder Amy Jo Tyson approaches art and design from multiple disciplines, including painting, drawing, wallpaper and rugs. Amy launched True North with the intention of creating enduring works of art that invigorate both the home and spirit. After earning her BFA from Indiana University Bloomington, Amy skimmed along the West Coast, from San Diego to Seattle, where the natural landscape inspired bold, colorful canvases and obsessive dot and line patterns. Later, she relocated to New York City where she earned a degree in textiles from the revered Fashion Institute of Technology and took her first foray in to the world of rugs. She worked as a design manager at high-end rug companies, creating organic, whimsical, abstract and repeat patterns using a variety of constructions and materials. She also traveled to international rug factories and trade shows, further honing her understanding of the industry and craft. With this unique depth and breadth of both knowledge and creativity, Amy moved to Washington state in 2013 and launched True North Textiles to execute her own unique vision of bespoke carpets employing unique texture, fabulous color and meticulous craftmanship. Combining her love of art, design and textiles, with True North, Amy creates functional works of art that become a part of your life and home. She firmly believes there is a special thrill in living with a carpet that was specifically created for you.
