CONTRIBUTORS 1. SEEING THAT IT IS AN ELECTION YEAR, DO YOU THINK THERE WILL BE A BETTER OR WORSE YOUTH VOTING TURN OUT THAN IN 2008? 2. IF YOU COULD MEET ANY ATHLETE, PAST OR PRESENT, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY? 3. HOW DO YOU THINK THE RECESSION HAS AFFECTED TEENS?

Erika Davis Senior, Thornwood High School Entertainment Bloggers 1. I think this year will be a better year for teen voters because everyone is getting older and starting to realize that in life you have opportunities. Teenagers are interested in every opportunity that would classify them as being grown. So I think that they will step up and give their input. 2. If I could meet any athlete it would be Troy Polamalu from the Pittsburgh Steelers. That is my favorite NFL team and he has contributed so much to them. He does a lot of charities outside of his football career. He sacrifices for his team and shows a drive that I’ve never seen in anybody else. 3. The recession has affected teens in both a negative and positive way. It is hard to find jobs and when teenagers are broke, it leaves them irritated. Irritation causes them to do other things (sell drugs, argue with people, try to take matters into their own hands, etc). I think it also has caused a lot of us to come to reality. We often say, “we want to be grown” but the reality of being grown is unreal to us. With no real money, we can’t do whatever we want because we are too busy budgeting. There have to be adult decisions made when it comes to money, and knowledge of the difference between need and want. Denialle Johnson Junior, George Henry Corliss Photojournalism Team 1. No, because the youth in this generation really are not into voting like they were back then. 2. I would meet Michael Jordan, because he’s a legend and still a lot of people look up to him. He motivated a lot of people. 3. This recession has affected us as teens because we are addicted to technology, our parents are becoming jobless, which leads to less money and less of what we want. Keith Brewer Sophomore, Simeon Career Academy Graphic Design Team 1. There could be a worse youth voting turnout than in 2008 because the government is always trying to look for someone older and wiser to be president. 2. Michael Jordan, because he is an inspiration to basketball. He always inspires me to train hard and meet my goals. 3. The recession has affected teens in a lot of ways because teens nowadays are starting to come to After School Matters programs to get paid, learn new skills, techniques, and have new life experiences.

Kathy Cook Sophomore, Simeon Career Academy Southside Editorial 1. I believe this year’s election turnout will be better than 2008 because more youth related things have been taking place in the government; for instance, the reforms in education. This year I’m pretty sure the turnout will show a tremendous difference in youth involvement in politics. 2. Seeing how basketball is one of my favorite sports. I would want to meet Kevin Durant because he is my favorite players and on my favorite basketball team (Oklahoma City/ OKC). He works for his rank in the sports world and I respect him for that and all the points he scores while on the court. 3. This recession has affected teens tremendously by not being able to be economically stable at home, as well as enjoying more of the finer things in life. Even then, some teens don’t get to experience work because of the lack of jobs due to the current state of economy. It’s taking a much bigger toll on teens than people can see. Janaya Greene Sophomore, Gwendolyn Brooks College Prep, Downtown Freelance Editorial 1. I think there will be a better youth turnout for voting because of a bigger awareness of youth voting now. Ever since it was known that the youth voting rate was decreasing, more youth have realized how important it is to vote and take advantage of the opportunities they have now than the opportunities others were granted in the past. 2. I would want to meet Michael Jordan because of the diversity in his success. He is a known legend in the basketball world, as well as an entrepreneur with his line of shoes. 3. It has made teens less able to participate in once in a lifetime experiences; such as touring a foreign country for a language class or something as simple as having a birthday party because of not having the funds. The recession has really discouraged teens from participating in activities, too, because it makes them afraid to ask their parents for money, fearing rejection. Pierre Seaton Freelance Graphic Design Team Downtown True Star Office 1. Maybe better; its hard to say. 2. If I could meet any athlete, it would be Michael Jordan because he was the greatest player in the NBA. He’s done amazing things in his career that most would never be able to beat. He’s truly the best inspiration to all future basketball players. 3. Greatly! Because of the recession, most teens are going to find it hard to obtain their first car and their first job. It also affects the possibilities of going to college with grants, financial aid and scholarships. Marshaun Burton Freshman, Julian High School Photography Team 1. I believe that there would be a better voting turnout because the economy is messed up and I’m sure they would want to change that. 2. If I could meet any athlete it would be Larry Bird. The reason I say this is because he has the most amazing hook shot. Also because he was on the Boston Celtics, which is my favorite team. 3. The recession has affected teens because now that some teens parents aren’t working or making little money, some teens decide to go out and sell drugs thinking this will take some pressure off their parents and keep clothes on their back.
