JOIN OUR SYMPOSIUM TEACHER CORPS—pictured above, and comprised of GKC-area middle- and high-school teachers—for their reflections, lesson ideas, and primary source documents from the TRUMAN CIVIL RIGHTS SYMPOSIUM. Proudly presented by the Truman Library and Truman Library Institute, the Symposium served as our nation’s 75th anniversary commemoration of a major milestone in America’s story: Truman’s Executive Order 9981, issued on July 26, 1948, ending 172 years of racial segregation in the U.S. Armed Forces. The DC-based Truman Civil Rights Symposium featured expert academic panels; extraordinary stories from military leaders, veterans and service members; unexpected moments of reckoning, remembrance and honor; and a keynote address by President Joe Biden.
