Homework (1st-5th Year

Homework (Prep) 1st to 5th Years

This is considered to be an important part of the term-time routine and offers every pupil the opportunity to establish a good routine. Homework does vary in quantity, though, and does not always involve writing. Homework is explained during the lesson and a reminder is placed on the pupil portal - Everest, which can be viewed by parents and pupils. Pupils must aim to complete the homework on the correct night to avoid an accumulation of work later in the week. The weekends should be used to catch up on missed class work and missed homework due to any absences from school.

Homework for each year group may be grouped into one of the following three categories, or a combination of these:

ƒ Preparation for the next lesson, which may include reading; this may also include learning new material (from books, interactive software, video clips or the internet) and then presenting this in class.

ƒ Extension in which the work will provide more difficult examples of ideas covered, or research that goes beyond the syllabus. ƒ Consolidation which helps to reinforce what has been studied in class through further exercises.

QUANTITY OF HOMEWORK

The duration of each homework given below is just a guideline. In some cases homework may be of a shorter or longer duration than suggested, depending on motivation and ability of the students, the demands of the teaching schedule, and the proximity of internal and external examinations. Note that the following is just a guide and may fluctuate throughout the year.

In the 1st – 3rd Year homework will be set by individual departments to provide further opportunities for pupils to develop their independent learning skills. There will be a maximum of three subject homeworks set per night. Each homework should take no longer than 20 minutes.

Each homework should be 30 minutes long. There are two pieces of homework for Religious Studies (RS) and one piece of homework for PHSEE per fortnight, three pieces of homework per fortnight for each Dual Award science and four for all other subjects. Since many classes are taught in doubles, it may not be possible to set four separate half hour homeworks, hence a total of one hour of homework may be set per week, to be completed during the week, recognising that a full week will be needed to complete this work, due to the competing demands of other subjects. Students should expect to complete the equivalent of up to four half hour homeworks each evening.

HOMEWORK ASSISTANCE

Departments provide clinics at different times during the week and pupils are welcome to attend to get help with work. For those who wish to do homework at school rather than at home.
