Thirty-nine years ago, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust embarked on an exciting journey driven by a bold dream. We believed that by building a stronger home for the arts in downtown Pittsburgh, we could provide meaningful and inspiring experiences, foster a deeper sense of community, build a better economy, and establish a thriving hub for people to visit and reside. In other words, we believed that the arts had a ripple effect — one that could positively transform the cultural, social, and economic fabric of our city.
Today, the impact of that vision is undeniable. As both a steward for the arts and a driver of economic growth, we have witnessed firsthand how the arts continue to revitalize our city and uplift the entire region.
Building on this legacy, we ramped up our efforts this year to enhance downtown Pittsburgh by collaborating with elected officials and district partners. Together, we’re working on major projects that will help us to maximize the use of our properties and other key locations in the Cultural District. The plans underway are just the beginning of the exciting improvements coming in the years ahead.
While driving these plans forward, we also took time to reflect on our role as an organization and examine how we can best serve our community. Through this process, we defined a new strategic framework in 2023, centered around five core pillars:
1
2
ARTS EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Making The Arts Accessible
We offer free and deeply discounted arts experiences.
3
STEWARDSHIP OF ICONIC VENUES
Making The Arts Exceptional
We create welcoming spaces for all to experience the power of the arts.
In the following pages, we invite you to explore how we are advancing our mission through each of these pillars. From groundbreaking performances to innovative educational initiatives, our efforts are driven by a commitment to making the arts accessible, inclusive, and transformative for all.
This work is only possible through close collaboration. We're deeply thankful to our incredible resident companies and fellow arts organizations throughout Pittsburgh for embracing our shared vision and motivating us to think bigger and push further.
To our dedicated staff, volunteers, trustees, artists, donors, and community members who champion our mission year after year: You are the driving force behind our creative journey, ensuring the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust remains a nurturing home for art in all its forms.

EXCEPTIONAL
We continued to take special care of our artistic spaces — venues that serve as a shared home for both our organization and our partners. Beyond ensuring that our venues are safe and beautiful, we also improved accessibility in our venues and expanded volunteer opportunities to provide the best guest experience possible.
2023 HIGHLIGHTS
Transformed by recent renovations, the new Greer Cabaret Theater, Lounge at the Greer Cabaret, and Kara Family Lobby for Theater Square reopened to the public with the Pittsburgh CLO’s run of Tick Tick Boom
The Benedum Center marquee received digital upgrades and necessary maintenance to preserve its historic charm.
As part of our Capital Improvement Plan, we partnered with building consultant firms to evaluate and enhance functionality across our venues and public spaces.
We installed equipment to provide closed captioning and audio description for digital films as well as accessible service counters at our theaters.
We launched our partnership with Kulture City, an initiative aimed at providing support to audience members with sensory needs.
The Beyond the Stage program, now in its second year, continued to engage local CAPA students, offering exposure to diverse careers in the performing arts industry.

Throughout the year, we hosted a variety of events and festivals that drew crowds and brought the Cultural District to life. We also collaborated closely with district partners and city officials to continue enhancing our district’s appeal.
With the help of consultants, we’ve also developed a strategic plan with short and long-term projects to link downtown areas, creating a vibrant mix of arts, businesses, and community spaces right in the city’s core.
2023 HIGHLIGHTS
With an adjusted footprint, the 64th annual Dollar Bank Three Rivers Arts Festival showcased three public art attractions and celebrated the full-scale return of the Artist Market, showcasing over 300 artists for the first time since before the pandemic.
The luminarium, Architects of Air: Daedalum, attracted an audience of nearly 6,000 over the course of its seven-week run in the Giant Eagle Foundation Backyard.
Highmark First Night Pittsburgh welcomed 22,000 guests and featured the reopening of the Clemente Bridge and the Firetree Project presented by Dollar Bank, a 24-foot-tall steel sculpture.

Making The Arts
Throughout the year, we strengthened ties with arts groups locally and across the country. Multiple industryrelated conferences in Pittsburgh gave us the opportunity to showcase our work, represent our district, and engage in important conversations around best practices.
2023 HIGHLIGHTS
We welcomed the Pittsburgh Playhouse at Point Park University into the Pittsburgh Tessitura Consortium, expanding the group to 11 organizations: Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Public Theater, August Wilson African American Cultural Center, Point Park University’s Pittsburgh Playhouse, Pittsburgh Arts & Lectures, City Theatre Company, and Pittsburgh Musical Theater.
The American League of Symphony Orchestras and Opera America hosted national conferences in the Cultural District — both of which had panels comprised of District leaders on Shared Services.
The International Association of Venue Managers Conference, hosted in Pittsburgh, sparked visibility and dialogue, with Kendra Whitlock Ingram delivering a keynote address, and our district venues hosting staff members of performing arts centers.

After major disruptions caused by the pandemic, we are making encouraging strides on our multi-year path toward recovery. While challenges remain, we have several reasons to be hopeful about the future:
Returning Audiences
We’re thrilled to see patrons return in earnest, with attendance rebounding to nearly 90% of pre-pandemic levels. The renewed enthusiasm for live performances is clear in the popularity of our series like PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh, which outpaced attendance in similar markets nation-wide. Equally encouraging is the interest in our cutting-edge, diverse offerings like the Dance Council. Even downtown parking revenues increased, signaling more event-based evening activity overall.
Data-driven Decisions
We’re enhancing our data-driven approach to keep our finances on solid footing. New tools and training from consultants at TRG Arts are helping staff analyze ticketing demand and build lasting relationships with patrons. To increase our return on investment, we are thoughtfully trimming ad-vertising expenses without sacrificing impact. Plus, funding for a new centralized data analytics team will help us extend this data-driven approach across departments in the future.
Strong Fundraising
Our journey back has been fueled by the amazing generosity of supporters—individuals, corporations, foundations, and more. Their overwhelming support allowed us to exceed our annual fund-raising goal, achieving 105% of our target. Moreover, our multi-year comprehensive Capital
Campaign concluded in 2022 with pledged donations that will continue providing crucial financial support for years to come. This is important as the Trust looks to continue to increase fundraising for operations in the years ahead to better support the Cultural District and its arts partners.
Investing in Our Spaces
We are able to make big investments in our physical spaces too, thanks to strong support from our community. Through our $30 million, three-year capital improvement plan, we are prioritizing upgrades to our theater venues. These improvements are important for two reasons. First, theater activity accounts for 70% of the Trust’s annual earned revenue. Second, these upgrades benefit all users of our theaters, including resident companies by enabling them to continue providing exceptional arts experiences.
Shared Resources
Our Shared Services program continues to find ways of increasing efficiencies, cutting costs, and increasing revenue. By sharing ticketing, fundraising, and marketing tools and services with a growing number of local arts organizations, we’ve collectively saved millions of dollars for the community since the inception of this initiative.
Even though a full recovery will take time, these positive strides fill us with optimism.
