Acknowledgement of Country The National Trust Heritage Festival acknowledges the traditional owners of the land these events will be held on. The Festival acknowledges and respects their continuing culture and contribution they make to the life of Western Australia. Readers are advised that this programme contains images of people who have passed away.
Welcome to the 2015 National Trust Heritage Festival The ANZAC centenary that inspired this year’s theme, Conflict and Compassion, has seen the community produce a range of events revealing touching military stories over the decades. It has also initiated a number of moving talks and exhibitions focused on Aboriginal, charitable and medical history amongst others. In 2014, the Festival received a massive growth in support with event numbers doubling from that of the previous year. It is heartening to see the community’s appreciation for all things heritage and shows our thirst for heritage experiences. The Festival is assisting local areas to build a greater sense of community

and appreciation for their diverse heritage. It is helping to raise the profile of heritage minded community groups and organisations, many of whom could not otherwise achieve this exposure, and is raising awareness of the significant work they do. It also offers the community longer term learning opportunities not limited by the timeframes of the Festival. Of course, Festivals of this nature are only achieved through a collective effort. Our thanks therefore, to all those involved, from sponsors and partners, staff, events holders, volunteers and the wider community. We thank you for your input and for your service. Max Kay AM CitWA President, National Trust of Western Australia
Congratulations on the launch of the 2015 National Trust Heritage Festival. Heritage is about the places and stories that make Australia special. It includes our amazing natural places, our rich Indigenous heritage and the diverse historic sites that together reflect our development as a nation. The Australian Government is pleased to support the National Trust’s coordination of local heritage festivals across Western Australia celebrating and promoting our heritage. These events are an excellent opportunity for us all to understand how people, places and events have come together to make each area unique.

It is fitting in the centenary year of the ANZAC landings that the theme of the 2015 Festival should be Conflict and Compassion, which has inspired the 160 events on the Western Australian programme. The National Trust Heritage Festivals, in conjunction with Australia’s Heritage Week, bring together events and celebrations throughout Australia. These events are created through the efforts of communities to increase the awareness and appreciation of heritage places and the stories that are important to us all. Every town, city and community has something it can share with the Australian people.

ANSWERING THE CALL

City of Kwinana
Whiteman Park
City of Nedlands Library
St George’s Cathedral
When archivist Shannon Lovelady learned no one knew how many West Australians perished at Gallipoli, she established the Gallipoli Dead from Western Australia project to determine the number. She gathered the data and a team of skilled researchers, and together, they worked it out. Hear how the project came about, the team involved, the sources used and the incredible stories unearthed as they worked out how many West Australians were killed at Gallipoli.
The Gallipoli campaign cost the lives of over 34,000 British troops, most of whom were English. As we remember the 8,709 Australians who fell at Gallipoli, we also pause, just before ANZAC Day, to remember our fallen allies. A commemoration is followed by refreshments and then by a music-hall style concert with professional soloists in a celebration of all things English on Australian soil. Commemoration service is free. Fees apply for concert.
See a multimedia exhibition featuring the hidden stories of Kwinana residents involved in conflicts and the impact on their descendants. A thought provoking display encouraging you to reflect on the certainties and contradictions of conflicts. In addition to the main exhibition space, the event uses heritage sites to offer immersive experiences about life in Kwinana during WWI & WWII. Visit livekwinana. com.au for details, venues & times.

The Silver Chain is well known today for its home-based services to the elderly and others in need, but did you know it began in 1905 as a children’s club aiming to raise money to fund a hospital bed for a child? At that time, a dedicated children’s hospital didn’t exist and the plight of poor children, women and the elderly was of increasing concern. Join a bus tour of the local military sites, including the WWII military hospital ruins. Visit the railway and military museums or sit by the road and wait for them to come to you with a parade of military vehicles.
Join us 100 years after the Gallipoli landings as we explore the impact of the 20th century wars & bring V-Day to Merredin. Discover historical sites. Meet “Huey” the Vietnam War helicopter. Dine & dance the night away at a glitzy evening of wartime nostalgia. Enjoy a long lunch with rations-inspired menu. Attend a Mother’s Day Picnic. Watch the army parade. See a live performance of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Free entry, but fees apply for some events.

Shire of Merredin
The classic story that Australian children grew up with is coming to the historic Cummins Theatre on Mother’s Day. During the Blitz in 1940, four siblings are evacuated from London to the safety of the countryside, to live in a sprawling manor with an eccentric, but kindly, professor. While exploring the house the youngest sibling, Lucy, stumbles upon an old wardrobe. She climbs inside and finds herself walking through a magical forest into the land of Narnia.
