ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

WELCOME TO THE 2016

The Western Australian Heritage Festival acknowledges the traditional owners of the land on which these events will be held. The Festival acknowledges and respects their continuing culture and contribution they make to the life of Western Australia.

I’m very pleased to invite you to join with the National Trust in celebrating Australia’s historic, natural and Aboriginal heritage during April and May.

OF COUNTRY

WESTERN AUSTRALIAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL

Cultural Sensitivity Note Readers are advised that this programme contains images of people who have passed away.

The Discovery & Rediscoveries theme has inspired many events and the Festival’s seven mascots that you will meet in this Events Guide. These Lazarus species were all thought extinct until they were rediscovered. However a local, Gilbert the Potoroo, found only near Albany, has been hard hit by the 2015 bushfires. Other interpretations of the theme have focused on the 400th anniversary of Dutch explorers landing on WA

shores, discovering Aboriginal culture, engineering heritage and traditional heritage skills. The National Trust would like to acknowledge the continued support of the Federal Government and the collaborative efforts and contributions of all our sponsors, supporters, partners, event holders, staff and volunteers. With the support of Westlink, National Trust staff were able to produce a regional TV program focused on the festival which you can download. With so many interesting events to discover, I encourage you to discover, rediscover and appreciate our shared heritage. Max Kay AM CitWA President, National Trust of Australia (WA)

CONGRATULATIONS ON

THE LAUNCH OF THE 2016 WESTERN AUSTRALIAN HERITAGE FESTIVAL

The Australian Government is proud to support the National Trust’s local heritage festival across Western Australia, which is a great way of celebrating and promoting our heritage. This year’s theme, Discovery & Rediscoveries, encourages us all to explore stories that have been unearthed in our communities, and learn about lesser known places. The festival will highlight the unknown stories of heritage places, allowing the community to see them with fresh eyes and learn about the unsung heroes that made Western Australia the place it is today.

The Western Australian Heritage Festival, in conjunction with Australia’s Heritage Week, brings people together for events and celebrations across the nation. At the heart of these events is the hard work of local communities to increase the awareness and appreciation of heritage places and the stories that are important to us all. Australia’s magnificent natural, historic and Indigenous heritage places capture the stories that shape our nation, and the Australian Government is pleased to support the National Trust in managing and protecting our heritage places. The 2015 festival was a huge success with over 145,000 visitors. I have no doubt that the 2016 festival will share the same success. The Hon Greg Hunt MP Minister for the Environment

Museum in a Box

A Park for All Reasons

Come and explore the creativity and innovation of Armadale residents past and present. Made in Armadale celebrates creations of all kinds, and the role they played in making our community great. From early industry to fine art, this exhibition will have something of interest for everyone. History House Museum is open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10am4pm and weekends 1pm-4pm.

The City of Wanneroo is thrilled to launch our very own Museum in a Box program for 2016. This exciting outreach program has been designed for use by educational institutions throughout Perth. We have designed and curated four different boxes, each addressing a different person or subject connected to World War I and the Wanneroo area. Each box contains real museum specimens, artefacts, images, DVDs, CDs, books and educational resources. Visit the Festival website for more details.

Explore A Park for All Reasons exhibition which reveals the fascinating history of Sir James Mitchell Park. See historic photos, maps and a large collection of Chinese artefacts revealing the park’s history from first European settlement in 1829 to the present day. This riverside park area facing the city was occupied by Chinese gardeners for 70 years until 1950 and slowly developed into today’s beautiful landscaped recreation area, only after a number of redevelopment schemes were rejected by local residents.

Rediscovering Redcliffe Exhibition Belmont Museum

Redcliffe is one of the oldest suburbs in WA. An encounter with an Aboriginal community in the area was recorded by Captain Stirling on his 1827 exploratory voyage. Designed according to Garden City Movement principles, Redcliffe’s also hosted a flourishing brickworks and been home to generations of post war European migrants. With planned changes for the Perth Airport, the City is delving back into history, commissioning new research and making surprising rediscoveries. At this exhibition, meet the characters, hear their stories and experience the ‘feeling’ of this unique place. Unfinished Business State Library of Western Australia

Unfinished Business reveals the visual stories of 30 Australian Indigenous people living with a disability by photographer Belinda Mason and film makers, Knierim Brothers. Each participant’s story is complex and intertwined with Australia’s history, which has resulted in today’s high rates of disability in Australian Indigenous communities. This exhibition was developed in close collaboration with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants and the stories that they tell are their own and that of their people. People with sensory, cognitive and learning impairments are able to engage with this exhibition via mobile app.

Wrecks and Recreation: Wonders of the Wanneroo Coast Wanneroo Regional Museum

Around 400 years ago European navigators began sailing perilously close to WA on their way to South East Asia. Many voyages ended tragically and now the Wanneroo coast is home to several wrecks lying beneath the waves. From the 1920s, new roads to the coast meant residents of surrounding area could work and holiday here. From whaling to holiday shacks, the Wanneroo coast is full of historical riches (and maybe the odd silver coin). Join us for a series of activities in the school holidays to discover more about our maritime past. Visit the Festival website for more details. Colouring the Past

Canning From On High

Come and enjoy a trip back in time as you discover a display of photographs depicting the history of the suburbs within the Town of Cambridge. The display will also combine colouring-in pages created from the original historic photographs, so no matter your age, you are invited to colour the past at Cambridge Library. Visit www.library. cambridge.wa.gov.au for more details.

View a collection of large aerial photographs from 1963 of the Canning area. Each week a different set of photos will be on display at the Riverton Library during the Festival. See the sand pit that became the Brownlie Towers site; why do areas of Rossmoyne and Shelley have sea shells in the ground?; and wonder at the large open spaces that are now part of Cannington Central.

From Guildford to Gallipoli: “A Light on two Lighthorsemen”

ANZAC Day at ANZAC Cottage

ANZAC Sunset Service

The Harper brothers joined the 10th Light Horse and left their elegant home on the banks of the tranquil Swan River for the horrors of the ratinfested trenches in Gallipoli. How did they care for their horses? What was life like for the family they left behind? Discover their experiences and fate through letters, postcards and official documents in a moving onehour presentation before touring their childhood home.

ANZAC Cottage was built in one day by the community in 1916 as a war memorial to those who gave their lives at Gallipoli and as a home for a wounded soldier. The Sunset Ceremony at 5.30pm is the last commemoration on the Australian mainland and honours the community and those who have served Australia in any conflict. Children are welcome to come at 3pm to make a wreath to lay at the flagpole during the ceremony.

This year’s annual sunset ceremony at Peninsula Farm will be particularly poignant. July marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Joseph Hardey, named for his grandfather, the pioneer of Peninsula Farm. On a day when we remember all Australians and New Zealanders who served in conflicts and peace keeping operations, we will remember Corporal Joe Hardey, who died on the Western Front far from home, and the many WA families like the Hardeys affected by the Great War.

Discovering and Rediscovering Nedlands City of Nedlands, Nedlands Library, Local Studies

Rediscover Nedlands. The impression of Nedlands today, as a leafy suburb, is a far cry from its beginnings as a convict depot. Once, cattle roamed these areas and the dense bushland hid courting couples and the bodies of murder victims. As Nedlands grew, it housed establishments for the mentally ill, orphans, migrants and became a home for the outcasts of society. After the war, returned soldiers built homes in the ‘bridal suburb’ and their families tamed the surrounding areas. Rediscover Nedlands’ rich and surprising history. Cathedral Square Walk & Talk with Richard Offen

ANZAC Cottage: the first 100 years

Babywear, Bonnets and Bootees

Richard Offen, Executive Director of Heritage Perth, will give a free talk about, and a guided walk around, what is becoming Perth’s most exciting new ‘old’ precinct, Cathedral Square. Join him on a journey of ‘discovery and rediscovery’ through the Deanery dating from 1859, St George’s Cathedral, St Andrew’s Church located on the original home-site of the first Colonial Surgeon, Burt Memorial Hall and the breathtakingly restored 19th century Old Treasury Building, now named State Buildings.

ANZAC Cottage, the house that was built in one day in 1916 to provide a house for a returned soldier as an ANZAC memorial, has enjoyed a varied and fascinating history in its first hundred years. Anne Chapple, granddaughter of its first resident, will tell the story of how the decision was made to build the cottage, the amazing construction by the community, family life in the cottage and how it eventually came to be in the hands of the Vietnam Veterans Association and subsequently the City of Vincent.

Following morning tea, take the rare opportunity to view some of the babywear (dating from 1850-1990) in the collection, most of which has never been on display! See exquisite white work gowns, lace baby dresses, smocked children's wear and accessories. The engaging Rosie Minchin will give a presentation on the way baby clothing has changed over time, with culture, according to social mores. Visit the festival website for more details. CY O’Connor and the WA Press

KSP Writers’ Centre Open Day

A Drive Through Historic Canning

The CY O’Connor story would have us believe a good man, criticised for the Goldfields Pipeline, perhaps lost faith in it and took his own life. Peter Burke, writer of Wettening Auralia, will tell us the full story. Why the Chief Engineer was attacked in parliament. Why the Sunday press wrote what it did. And who was doing the writing. Peter reveals a new villain, mysteriously anonymous in the 114 years since the tragedy.

The heritage-listed KSP Writers’ Centre in the beautiful Perth hills offers rich history as well as support services for budding writers of all ages and abilities. This free dropin event offers guided tours of the property, photo exhibitions, author performances, special guest talks, a treasure hunt for children, market stalls, book sales and lunch/tea at the cafe. The Centre was the home of novelist Katharine Susannah Prichard and her husband Capt Hugo Throssell, the first WA WWI recipient of the VC. Sturdy shoes recommended.

Join a free bus tour from Woodloes Museum in Cannington to go around some of the local historic sites. Discover the Canning of yesteryear and hear from a local historian about some of the fascinating stories that abound. Tours will take approximately 45 min and leave at 11am, 12 noon, 1pm and 2pm. Bookings needed as the bus has limited seating. Book at a Canning library or via email or phone.

In December 1876, over 50 souls were rescued from the sinking S.S. Georgette at Redgate in Margaret River. It has long been held that 16-year-old Grace Bussell and Aboriginal stockman Samuel Isaacs rode their horses into treacherous surf to save the people from the stranded Georgette. The incident made heroes of them both. In her novel The Capes, Perth author Marcia van Zeller proposes an alternative reading of this tragic shipwreck tale. Free Entry Sundays at Central Greenough

Carnarvon Heritage Festival

Sandstone Heritage Museum Open Day

Open a window into a regional colonial settlement of yesterday and wander through this well preserved historical community. Explore the government and law offices, churches, school and stores that serviced the local thriving agricultural community in the 1860s. Stop for a meal at the contemporary cafe and visitor centre at the entrance. Enjoy free entry to the property on Sundays during the Festival. Central Greenough is located 30min drive south of Geraldton.

Carnarvon is rich in history and heritage, from One Mile Jetty built in the 1880s as one of the first ports in WA, to the OTC Dish that helped put man on the moon in 1969. This fascinating new festival explores the early settler days of Carnarvon. Immerse yourself in local history and heritage and visit the various events around town including art & craft workshops in what was once the community hall or be entertained by a live show at the historic Carnarvon Civic Centre, once the old railway and goods shed where camel trains would cart produce.

Discover our stories of the past told through compelling photographs and artefacts. The musuem’s corrugated iron building, originally built as a store in the late 1940s, contains an exhibition depicting how life was and is now lived in this small settlement in outback Australia. Pick up a brochure and map and follow the self-guided walk/drive through the town and surrounding district featuring sites of historical and natural significance. The Sandstone Heritage Museum is open Easter-October annually.
