WELCOME TO TRU Located in the heart of Kamloops and overlooking the North and South Thompson Rivers, our campus features plenty of green space, a botanical garden, and an impressive mix of historic and modern facilities. A vibrant community of over 14,000 students from across Canada and around the world complete undergraduate and graduate degrees on campus with us in addition to diplomas, apprenticeships, professional certificates, continuing studies, and ESL. Another 13,000 students take advantage of our flexible learning options to study online or by distance through the Open Learning division. Our students can also take programs at regional centres throughout the interior of BC, including a satellite campus in Williams Lake. WELCOME TO THE INTERNATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE AT TRU For over 25 years, Thompson Rivers University (TRU) has been delivering customized training programs of the highest calibre, earning us worldwide recognition. Our intensive, short-term programs are strategically balanced to maximize learning opportunities while allowing participants enough time to gain an appreciation of Canadian culture and participate in carefully selected activities. The result is a rich and rewarding experience that will last a lifetime. We offer open enrolment programs and customized programs all designed to meet the goals of participants. Our open enrolment programs offer the most popular features perfected over decades of running summer and winter camp programs, resulting in a highly motivating and fun learning environment. In addition, we work closely with international partners, governments, educational institutions and businesses to develop programs tailored to the needs of the client. Many of our customized programs include an English language studies component. We build on the diverse range of programming offered at Thompson Rivers University to develop programs that meet the specific needs of our partners. Our program delivery is versatile. We can deliver programs on our campus or overseas at a location that suits the needs of our program participants. 4

HOMESTAY Our homestay program provides students in our programs with the added bonus of being immersed in the English language while living with a Canadian family. Homestay placements provide students with three meals per day, the opportunity to speak English outside of the classroom in a supportive environment and firsthand experience of the day-to-day lifestyle of typical Canadian families. We find that strong bonds of friendship often develop between visiting students and their homestay families—it’s not uncommon for these friendships to last long after the program has ended. Our homestay families are passionate about Canada and about TRU. They open up their homes because they recognize the importance of building a global community, and exchanging cultural experiences is a terrific way to help students improve their English. Canada is a land of diversity and several of our homestay families have immigrated to Canada themselves. As a result, they understand the opportunities and challenges of adapting to a new culture. Our homestay families have been carefully selected to provide our students with the best experience. All homestay families have mandatory criminal record checks and houses are visited by a TRU staff member to ensure our high standards are met. Each homestay family is unique. Some students may prefer staying with busy working professionals while others may enjoy the opportunity to spend time with a retired couple. Some may prefer a quiet household with one adult while other may choose to experience life in a large family. Residences vary too, with some being cozy condominiums and others being spacious homes. Many Canadians enjoy the added companionship that comes from having pets. Regardless of the differences, our homestay families all have one thing in common—they are eager to welcome students to TRU, to our community and to their homes.

Overview Meeting the needs of hundreds of enthusiastic learners from around the world each year, our open programs form the cornerstone of all the programming offered by Thompson Rivers University and are open to individuals as well as large and small groups. We have developed a comprehensive range of programs to help our students achieve their individual goals. A collection of curated cultural and recreational activities are woven into each program and ample time is reserved for level-appropriate English language classroom instruction. The result is a highly motivating and dynamic program that will leave you with increased cultural knowledge, greater language proficiency and a more informed world view. LANGUAGE AND CULTURE PROGRAMS Ages 16 and up All of our language and culture programs are designed to provide students with the English skills needed to fully participate in all activities, with an emphasis placed on the core areas: speaking, listening, writing, reading, vocabulary and grammar. All students will participate in hands-on workshops that enable students to develop and expand their intercultural communication skills. In addition, we offer a series of very practical and relevant electives designed to boost our students’ learning opportunities. These programs include an orientation to TRU’s campus and the City of Kamloops.
Intercultural Communication Skills Workshops We include four thought-provoking workshops at the beginning of all language and culture programs. Participants will explore the meaning and basic elements of culture, experiment with key concepts in verbal and non-verbal communication, and reflect on their own strengths and weaknesses so they can develop deeper cultural awareness. During the workshops, we also assess each student’s level of English ability for group placement for the remainder of the program.
Electives We offer students the choice of one elective from the options below. Every effort will be made to ensure each student gets their first choice, but this may not always be possible. In these cases, second and third preferences will be taken into consideration. • Applied English. Students will work with a partner to choose an interesting topic, research it, and create and present an interesting display in a poster format. • Global citizenship. Students will gain a deeper understanding of their rights and responsibilities as a global citizen and will explore key concepts, such as diversity and privilege. • Healthy choices. Students will increase their understanding of healthy eating, exercise and maintaining a healthy mind, while expanding their English vocabulary. • Leadership skills. Students will explore basic leadership theory, identify their own leadership style, and learn about effective communication techniques. • STEM skills. Designed for students with future career goals in science, technology, engineering or mathematics to learn field-specific terminology, develop functional language, and practise working with numbers in English. • Study skills. Students will explore strategies for improving study skills including setting realistic goals and using study time effectively, as well as experimenting with a variety of effective study techniques. • Sustainability. Students will learn how to make smart choices that will make the world a safer and cleaner place, learn about zero waste living and explore sustainability projects on campus. • Workplace English. This elective will guide students through all the important aspects of a job search including an individualized labour market survey, resumé preparation, cover letter writing and job interview skills. 8
Three-week Summer Language and Culture Program One of our most popular open programs is the three-week Summer Language and Culture program. We offer an exciting schedule balancing instruction with cultural and recreational activities, all designed to maximize our students’ experience.
Four-week Summer Language and Culture Program Our four-week Summer Language and Culture Program includes all aspects of the three-week program, but with an additional week of instruction and activities. We also include a Student Social in this program—one of the favourite events of the summer.

Three-week Enhanced Language and Culture Transition Program We have added six enhanced sessions to our three-week language and culture program to meet the needs of international students who will be starting academic programs in September. This program includes: • Enhanced Language Studies: focused on preparing students to achieve the best possible scores on the Accuplacer test. • Enhanced Study Skills: successful students know that learning new and efficient ways to study can make a huge difference. These workshops are packed with practical ideas for making your study time as efficient as possible. Reduced rates are offered for students enrolled in a TRU academic program.

Student Social Part of our four-week Summer Language and Culture program, the Student Social is an opportunity to interact with other international students. Students participating in many different programs during this time are invited to attend. With a live DJ, photo booth, prizes and snacks, this event is always a highlight!
Language and Music Program Ages 12 – 16 years We have teamed up with the Kamloops Interior Summer School of Music (KISSM) to offer an exciting summer program for youths to follow their passion for music while gaining improved English skills and taking part in fun cultural and recreational activities. During music studies, students will work with professional musicians and music educators and can choose between popular band and choral classes. Musical instruments can be supplied if you do not have your own.

Language and Culinary Arts Program Our four-week program will allow students to experience Western cuisine and hospitality from a Canadian perspective. Student s will learn working side by side with Red Seal chefs to learn Western food preparation and service. We will also introduce students to the variety of cuisine in Western Canada. Our professional chefs will take students on an exciting culinary voyage of discovery each day in the TRU Culinary Arts building. Students will learn about food preparation, products and presentation reflecting the distinct flavours and cooking styles that Canada is famous for.

CUSTOMIZED GROUP PROGRAMMING Thompson Rivers University is proud to offer customized programs for groups large and small. In addition to our open programs, we have a long history of providing customized English language training, including study tours, ESL combined with academic programs, and professional development programs. These programs feature a combination of specific English language studies along with components of specialized training in the areas of business, tourism, health, social work, psychology, child care, etc. We have worked with educational institutions, governments, corporations, non-profits and agents to build tailored programs and we have a proven track record of meeting the unique requirements of our clients. These programs can be delivered on the TRU campus, elsewhere in Canada, or abroad. We are able to utilize and adapt our academic program strengths to develop programming in almost any field, including components such as English language training, intercultural communication, cultural experiences and recreational activities as desired. For instance, in the People’s Republic of China, we collaborated with the China Network Communications Corporation to train customer support site managers who were responsible coordinating and managing telecommunications and media services for the 2008 Summer Olympics.

Banff
Visit historic Stanley Park, including the totem poles, witness the jaw-dropping scenic views from Capilano Suspension Bridge, shop along famous Robson Street, explore the history and boutiques of Gastown, the city’s oldest neighbourhood, and marvel at the artisans and local produce on Granville Island.
Located in Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, Banff is a town within Banff Provincial Park, and well worth the trip to explore its outdoor beauty. The drive from Kamloops to Banff will fly by as you stop at many sightseeing locations along the way and marvel at the beauty outside your bus window. Sightseeing stops include Emerald Lake, Jasper and Mount Robson Viewpoint, just to name a few.
Some groups flying into Vancouver airport find it desirable to include a one or two-night stay in Vancouver before being transported to TRU. However, including a Vancouver trip at the end of the program can be a nice finale to your time in Canada.
Okanagan Wine Country No trip to BC is complete without a visit to BC’s largest grape growing region, beloved for the unparalleled climate and landscape. If you are interested in learning about wine and visiting local wineries, this is the trip for you. Included in this trip is a stop at Orchard Park Shopping Centre, Kelowna’s premier shopping mall.
Sun Peaks Resort Kamloops is located 45 minutes away from beautiful Sun Peaks Resort. Regardless of the season, there is always an adventure waiting for you at this world-class resort. During the winter months, outdoor enthusiasts come from all over to ski and snowboard, and summer brings golfing, hiking, outdoor concerts and the local farmers market.
Victoria Visit the capital of British Columbia, located on Vancouver Island and well known for its old-world charm and new-world experiences. Home to the Parliament Buildings, the Empress Hotel, Beacon Hill Park and numerous colourful gardens, including Butchart Gardens, Victoria is well worth a visit.
Whistler Blackcomb Mountain Whistler Blackcomb, home to some of the events held during the 2010 Winter Olympics, is located four hours from Kamloops. Ranked North America’s number 1 ski resort, Whistler Blackcomb offers over 200 marked runs during the winter months and a variety of activities during the summer, sightseeing on the Peak 2 Peak Gondola among them.

ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES Overview We provide programs in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) that are intensive in nature and target the precise vocabulary and expressions required by the participants. These programs focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, utilizing a combination of authentic materials and engaging experiential learning activities. Business English and Golf for Professionals Our program gives students the chance to learn English while playing golf on award-winning courses. Our Business English program gives businesspeople the ability to communicate confidently, accurately and effectively in English-speaking situations. English and the Environment Our English and the Environment program will introduce learners to basic concepts about the environment and individual environmental responsibilities. We provide students the opportunity to learn how to contribute to a cleaner, heathier community through workshops held both on and off campus. Hands-on lessons, including a workshop led at Kamloops state-of-the-art water treatment facility, will demonstrate the importance individuals have on the overall well-being of our environment. Participants will also learn about TRU’s environmental sustainability initiatives while touring TRU’s certified LEED building, The Brown Family House of Learning. 18
ESL and Skiing/Snowboarding We offer an exciting program combining morning language lessons with afternoon skiing or snowboarding, so students can develop their English skills while also improving their skills on the slopes. If you are enthusiastic about learning the English language and improving your downhill form, this is the program for you! All classes will be held at Sun Peaks Resort, the second largest ski resort in Canada. Business English and Canadian Culture Program With globalization and international business on the rise, today’s students must be proactive to ensure they are successful in the job market. Our customized program will give students the tools to prepare English versions of important employment documents such as resumés and cover letters. We include both business English and general English in this program to increase proficiency in all areas of English. The program focuses on teaching transferable business skills; for example, initiating conversations, making telephone calls, negotiating in meetings, using email, handling complaints and explaining procedures. Intercultural communication workshops will introduce students to the key elements of cultural theory and cultural competency. We also provide guided tours to allow students to gain insights into successful local organizations located in or around Kamloops, learning about overseas marketing initiatives as well as the processes and requirements for hiring international workers. Guest lectures and a 10-hour job shadow opportunity are also included in this program.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT AND FIELD WORK PROGRAMS We offer customized programs preparing students to function successfully in professional settings in technical fields. Engineers and technologists must have more than just a thorough understanding of systems, components, and processes, they must also be able to communicate clearly with supervisory personnel, colleagues and customers, particularly in our globalized workforce. Our program is designed to provide an introduction to technical skills, as well as improved English proficiency and hands-on work experience.
Language Instruction We include language studies in each program to equip learners with both the oral and written communication skills they will need to fully participate in the program and job shadowing.
Classroom Instruction Students will be introduced to many skills that are essential for any person who aspires to work in the field. Subject areas will be taught in both classrooms and labs so students are able to put the theory into practice.
Job Shadowing This module provides an opportunity for students to gain Canadian workplace knowledge in a local business establishment. It is designed to integrate classroom theory and practical work experience and to provide students with realistic exposure to day-to-day operations. Students will observe and follow an experienced employee, and then gradually assume additional duties and responsibilities. After completing the job shadow, students have invaluable experience to include on their resumé. 20
Sample Program: Automotive and Mechanical Engineering Skill Development and Field Work In this program, we introduce students to many skills that are essential for any person who aspires to work in the automotive and mechanical design industry. Subject areas will be taught in both classrooms and automotive mechanics labs so students are able to put the theory into practise. Language studies focus on essential communication skills and technical terminology for the field and students will participate in job shadowing at local automotive mechanical shops. Overview Our professional development programs are designed to introduce participants to the latest developments in the theory and practice of education. Cutting-edge advancements pertaining to universal themes such as classroom instruction, integration of technology, and student assessment are presented in interactive workshop formats. We deliver the course content in a communicative, learner-centred format where our instructional team takes on the role of facilitators. A popular component of the program is the time that is allocated for small group as well as one-on-one seminars. We have successfully delivered these programs to over 1,700 participants from a variety of countries. Upon completion, participants are equipped with an impressive collection of instructional techniques and resources that can be put to use the moment the educators step back into their classrooms. Professional Development for Teachers of English as a Foreign Language In this program, we focus on equipping participants with a wide array of proven instructional techniques and strategies for teaching each of the core language skills at all levels of ability. Participants will develop and expand their understanding of current trends in pedagogical theory in the Instructional Methodology portion of the program. Our goal for the English for Educators component is to assist participants with fine-tuning their English proficiency by focusing on important areas such as error identification and accent reduction. We include time for small group as well as one-on-one seminars so that specific questions and concerns can be addressed for each student.
VISITING STUDENT PROGRAM We offer a Visiting Student Program to provide students with a study abroad opportunity in Canada. All courses will be counted towards university credits at the student’s home institution, based on the agreement between TRU and the partner institution. Students will receive a certificate of completion at TRU and academic electives completed are eligible to receive credits from TRU. Duration: One Semester (fall or winter) Admission Requirements: • Complete at least two semesters at a partner institution, with a GPA of 2.67 (70%) or higher; • Meet English language requirements and course prerequisite for TRU elective; • TOEFL (iBT 61), or IELTS (5.0), or a letter from a partner institution confirming student’s ability to take selected courses at TRU. Additional Information: • A minimum of 10 students is required for this program. • If a partner institution sends a group of 15 visiting students to TRU per semester, TRU will accept one instructor from the partner institution to participate in the program. TRU will pay the expenses of international travel, meals and accommodations for that instructor. • Various accommodation options available at reasonable rates.

Program Structure
1. INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATIONS
This course is designed to equip you with the skills you need to communicate effectively with business associates from around the world. After exploring different elements of culture and communication, you will learn practical techniques for reducing communication barriers and eliminating misunderstandings. Upon completion, you will have a much deeper appreciation of similarities and differences that exist among a range of cultures.`
2. LEADERSHIP SKILLS
In this course you will explore different leadership styles, understand the fundamentals of team-based organizations, consider motivational strategies, experiment with group dynamics, and participate in problem-solving. This is a hands-on course where you will have many opportunities to learn by doing. Activities include self-assessment, reflection, role-plays, and team-building tasks.
3. GLOBAL EMPLOYMENT SKILLS
We have designed this innovative course to reflect current research that shows that broad skills, including critical thinking, creativity, the ability to locate and evaluate information, the ability to work successfully in teams, and problem-solving are crucial for career success. Working through a series of project-based tasks, students will have an opportunity to develop and expand their proficiency in these areas. In addition, students will prepare resumĂŠs and practise job interview skills, while developing a greater awareness of career opportunities and challenges and building confidence.
4. LANGUAGE STUDIES
To maximize opportunities for academic success and ease the transition to Canada, English language classes will be provided for the first eight weeks of this program. Though emphasis will be on speaking and listening skills, you will also be able to develop and expand your reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary skills.

Early Childhood Education Specialization Students selecting our Early Childhood Education Specialization will gain the language skills needed for this field, as well as exposure to best practices in Early Childhood Education, including guest speakers from the childcare field and a visit to a daycare facility. In addition to Intercultural Communications and an Academic or ESL elective course, this program includes:
ENGLISH FOR EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
The purpose of this course is to equip non-native English speakers with specific terms and expressions that are needed for a successful career in the ever-growing childcare sector. While working through a series of carefully planned, content-based lessons, participants will be immersed in functional language and be able to enter the next phase of their training with greater ease and confidence. Classroom instruction will be presented in a student-centred format where the instructor acts as a facilitator and students take on responsibility for their own learning.
INTRODUCTION TO EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION IN CANADA
This course provides models of innovative practice and opportunities for students to understand the context, knowledge and skills of effective educators of young children in Canada. Areas of learning will include: relationships with children and families; child guidance, help and development; administration and program management; and the ECE’s professional role.

How do I arrange payment for my registration fee?
There are many personal benefits to studying abroad, and ways to grow both professionally and personally. Some students wish to study abroad to discover a new career path or to look good in a job interview while others have a strong desire to learn about a new culture and language while gaining interpersonal skills and seeing the world.
Once you have made the decision to study abroad, contact TRU for the appropriate application form. The completed form must to be sent back to TRU with your payment. Payment can be made via bank transfer.
Why is a TRU program right for me? • We provide participants with the highest levels of care and support including our multilingual team of International Student Advisors available for personal assistance on most aspects of your student life in Canada
Homestay accommodations, including three meals per day, are included in your registration fee. The price includes the night before the program begins as well as the night of closing celebrations. Additional nights are at your own expense and must be arranged directly with your assigned homestay family.

How far is Kamloops from Vancouver and how do I get there?
• All homestay families have mandatory criminal record checks and houses are visited by a TRU representative to ensure our TRU standard is met
Kamloops is a 3.5-hour drive, or 45-minute flight, from Vancouver. Driving can be a cost-efficient form of transportation, however, a flight will reduce your travel time and can be the most convenient.
• You will be oriented to the TRU campus and the Kamloops community upon start of your program • Studying abroad is a great way to learn about the Canadian culture first-hand and the best way for you to expand your English speaking abilities
Can I register for a TRU World ITC Program if I have very limited English? Yes, you are welcome to register regardless of your level of English. Our open programs are developed to accommodate multi-level students. You will be given the opportunity to learn in the classroom but also outside of the classroom during activities and while spending time with your homestay families.
What TOEFL or IELTS score do I require to register for a TRU World ITC program? We do not require your TOEFL or IELTS score for registration. Upon the start of your program, we use a series of assessment tools to accurately place you into a class with peers who share a similar level of English.
Do I require a travel visa or and electronic travel authorization to study abroad? This depends solely on your country of origin. Inquire into your country’s requirements well before your departure date.

How do I pay the homestay family that I will be living with?
Do I need medical coverage? Yes, each participant is required to purchase adequate medical coverage for the duration of the program, at their own cost. Contact TRU for further information regarding options.
