pantomime

Join the party this Christmas as we celebrate the Theatre Royal’s centenary year with the fabulous tale of Sleeping Beauty. Our dream of a pantomime tells the classic tale of a young princess who, through evil Carabosse’s curse, is doomed to sleep for 100 years and can only be awakened by love’s first kiss. The Theatre Royal team will once again be spinning a magical tale in their own inimitable style, with fire-breathing dragons (and we don’t mean Nurse Nelly), a battle between good and bad (and we don’t mean the jokes), a time-travelling prince and a fearsome forest of thorns. Throw in live music, original songs and lots of audience participation and you have all the ingredients for another blockbusting pantomime that the whole family will enjoy.

Not About Heroes By Stephen MacDonald

Not About Heroes tells a story you won’t forget of two of the finest ‘Great War’ poets, Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon, their friendship, their inter-dependency, their poetry. One hundred years on from the beginning of the First World War, Not About Heroes is both exhilarating and uncompromising in its exploration of love, war and a friendship that changed the face of British poetry. www.blackeyedtheatre.co.uk

Centenary Gala 100 - Not Out! When the Theatre Royal opened its doors in 1914, the first ever event was an evening of Variety and Film. And so, to celebrate our first 100 years, what else could we possibly put on but... an evening of Variety and Film?! We will be joined on stage by a host of exceptional performers - all of whom have previously performed at our beautiful venue - to help make this an evening to remember. Live music, comedy, magic and some real surprise “turns” will prove that Variety is very much the spice of life. To reserve your FREE ticket, please contact the box office. Donations welcome.

These memories have been turned into a series of short films using a variety of film genres. Eddi Reader

The Queen’s Knickers Get your knickers in a twist with this classic comedy for wise young children.

It’s all about knickers but it definitely won’t be pants!

What would you do if you lost the Queen’s pants? Dilys, the Queen’s maid, is the royal custodian of her Majesty’s ‘intimate apparel’, otherwise known as the Queen’s knickers. She guards HRH’s smalls as if they were the crown jewels. She would be mortified if anyone got a glimpse of them.

Based on the book by Nicholas Allan, adapted by Oliver Birch and John Biddle and directed by Lee Lyford.

But one day the knickers go missing, causing a national state of emergency and a diplomatic incident of catastrophic proportions. A celebration of the garments we all wear, but never show, this children’s classic is inventively told by two elastic actors.

Remember Fairground Attraction? The brilliant Eddi Reader is back! From the traditional to the contemporary, Eddi brings joyous life to all forms of song.

combine to make her a unique and powerful figure in contemporary British music. She has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling vocalists.

What sets Reader apart is the depth and quality of her emotional performance and her ability to connect with an audience. Her rare blend of meltingly true vocals and towering romanticism

Eddi performs some of her best loved songs including the well known single ‘Perfect’ which topped the British charts.

Post-show discussion: Thursday 16 October after 1.30pm matinée. FREE but please reserve a place when booking your tickets. It’s the 18th century. Kate Hardcastle is a young lady fixed up to meet the eligible Marlow with a view to marriage. Marlow is a young gent who is tonguetied with the upper classes and downright lecherous with commoners. So when Marlow is tricked into believing Kate’s ancestral home is a country inn, and mistakes Kate for a lowly barmaid what could possibly go wrong? Plenty. Set against the increasingly chaotic proceedings of one very long night, She Stoops to Conquer is a delightful romantic romp filled with ludicrous misunderstanding, mischief and mayhem. Northern Broadsides’ talented cast of actor-musicians bring their unique charisma, theatrical magic and innate sense of fun to this flamboyant period comedy. Come prepared for merriment, warmth, wit and wigs. Big wigs. Very big wigs! By Oliver Goldsmith, directed by Conrad Nelson, and designed by Jessica Worrall.

Anthony Missen and Isabel Álvarez. Histeria Productions.

Please Be Seated New Movement Collective, creators of innovative sitespecific dance productions, present a world premiere. Revealing the unexpected absurdity within everyday structures, Please be Seated is their first work for the stage, a darkly humorous blend of movement, animated structure and audio design.

Winchester Musicals and Opera Society presents Joan Littlewood’s musical entertainment Oh What a Lovely War - in the year of the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

Created in collaboration with furniture designer Jutta Friedrichs, sound artist Ben Houge, lighting designer Yaron Abulafia and installation artists and designers JaneJaney, Please Be Seated was developed at Theatre Royal Winchester and creates a journey that undermines and challenges conventional theatrical expectation.

Built upon the songs that ordinary British soldiers sang during a war that killed ten million in four years, the show offers a satirical and powerful commentary on the ironies and tragedies of war. Oh What a Lovely War was first performed at Theatre Royal Stratford East in 1963 and was an immediate hit, transferring to the West End in June 1963 and opening on Broadway in 1964 and received four Tony Award nominations including Best Musical.

This is a timeless story about loyalty and truth, human nature and human behaviour. It is a story about what happens when one person stands against the rules. About how we make meaning out of life and death and what, in the end, really matters. When Creon refuses to bury the body of Antigone’s unruly brother, her anger quickly turns to defiance. Creon, in an attempt to retain control, condemns her to a torturous death - she’s to be buried alive. #PilotAntigone
