After Jack Trott accidentally sells Daisy the cow for a worthless bag of beans, he sets off on a daring adventure to get her back. And because his Mummy doesn’t think he’s got what it takes to be a hero, she’s going too! Once he’s climbed the beanstalk to the sinister castle high in the clouds, Jack has to battle not only the evil Giant who lives there, but also the Giant’s wicked sister, Cruella.

? ? ?

Will Jack win the day and impress his hard-to-please girlfriend, Jill? (possibly) Will Jack’s silly brother, Billy, get in the way and mess things up as usual? (probably!) Will Jack’s mum, Dame Dotty ever admit her real age? (probably not!)

With original songs, loads of audience participation and an udder-ly hilarious script, this year’s family pantomime is going to be HUGE!

Flare Path Directed by Justin Audibert

Celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE Day, Flare Path is the epic wartime romance by celebrated playwright Terence Rattigan. Based on Rattigan’s experiences as a tail gunner during World War II, Flare Path paints an evocative portrait of life in wartime Britain for the RAF bomber crews, their wives and sweethearts, who were left awaiting their return. Set in 1942 against a backdrop of heartache and quiet bravery, Flare Path tells the story of former actress Patricia, the wife of RAF pilot Teddy, as their marriage is tested to the limits by the surprise arrival of Patricia’s ex-lover and Hollywood idol Peter Kyle. An unexpected and dangerous mission over Germany puts Patricia at

the centre of an emotional conflict as unpredictable as the war in the skies. With heart-tugging human emotion, Flare Path opens an unforgettable window into a pivotal moment in our history. This brand new production will be directed by rising star Justin Audibert (RSC, Young Vic, West Yorkshire Playhouse) and stars Phillip Franks (Heartbeat), Olivia Hallinan (Lark Rise to Candleford) and Alastair Whately (Birdsong) This major revival comes from the producers behind the hit touring production of Birdsong.

Trapped in Davey Jones’ locker, three sailors await their fate. They fight, laugh and cry as they propel themselves toward the same goal: escape! From the scraps of debris around them they invent new worlds: caves, forests, boats and entire oceans and find unexpected friendship in times of adversity. An energetic and humorous show with extraordinary puppets and design, Drifters explores the excitement of imagination: brown paper morphs into creatures, giant plastic bubbles dance a duet and people wade through an ocean of light.

“Drifters is interdisciplinary theatre at its best...it leaves the theatre with you. It supports you as you float down the street on an air-filled rubbish bag, which looks so like the sea you want to jump in.

Adrift from their Australian origins, award-winning theatre company Strange Arrangements have grown new roots in England. Drifters is their English debut.

Do it, jump in, see the show. Strange Arrangements is far and away one of the best companies you will see this year.”

D AWAR G WINNIN

In his 60 years on this planet, comedy writer and performer Andy Hamilton has experienced many changes. For instance, he was once a 6’4” tall professional basketball player, until a tree fell on him. But, of course, change is an inescapable part of the human condition.

During the past few years Andy and his writing partner Guy Jenkin have co-created, written and directed the hit BBC 1 sitcom Outnumbered and the acclaimed 2014 UK feature film What We Did on Our Holiday. Their impressive back catalogue also includes Channel 4’s Drop The Dead Donkey.

Why? Is that fair? Some changes are good, some bad. Why can’t they be more clearly labelled? How did we end up working longer hours? Where did all the sparrows go?

He also pops up from time to time on TV shows such as Have I Got News For You and QI.

If you’re feeling flustered because of flux, Andy will teach you how to cope with the changes we have seen and the changes yet to come. Contains mild peril.

Winchester Musicals and Opera Society presents

Wessex

Dance Academy

Wessex Dance Academy returns with a new cohort of young people whose lives have been transformed by dance.

A passionate tale of lust, seduction and betrayal, no other opera boasts as popular a following as Bizet’s Carmen, set during the dying days of a dystopian Spain.

Join us as the new company of dancers share their 12 week journey and celebrate their hard work and commitment with three new pieces of dance.

The action pivots around Carmen, a gypsy who has the power to seduce any man who suits her fancy. Don José, a corporal, throws honour aside in pursuit of Carmen. She soon casts off her ardent lover for the handsome toreador Escamillo. Jealousy and passion seal Carmen’s fate in one of opera’s most memorable conclusions. Bizet’s dazzling score evokes a sizzling atmosphere through some of the opera’s most famous melodies. Visually this will be like no other Carmen ever staged.

An evening of exciting choreography and moving film, this is a dance company you will never forget. This evening will also feature the “Wessex Girls: Wessex Boys”, the Academy’s performance company made up of Graduates from the past ten cohorts. PRE-show discussion: Thursday 19 November 6.00pm. Paintings by Lucy Pick Lucy’s work belies its simplicity, challenging the viewer to reassess ideas of form and traditional relationships. The paintings speak for themselves, evoking feelings and memories whilst reflecting on the traditions of painting and modernism and the reputations of her illustrious forbears, notably Lanyon and Hitchins.

Kim Norton: CaCO3 Trained in ceramics, a large part of Kim’s practice involves working site specifically, exploring scale and making work that impacts the human senses. This exhibition is part of 10 days Winchester CHALK 2015.

Lucy’s paintings have recently evolved from traditional landscapes to a more abstracted style that still draws on the surroundings that she loves in Hampshire, Cornwall and the Isle of Wight.

Materiality is key to her approach and she uses materials from their locality in their raw state to draw attention or to reimagine something that can often be regarded as unimportant or ordinary. This can range from soils, clays, brick, pigments and in this case chalk, a material that is core to Winchester’s geological makeup.

Born on the Isle of Wight and now living in Hampshire, she has exhibited widely and her work is held in many private collections.

Presented onto un-stretched canvas elevated away from the wall, CaCO3 dismisses any formal idea around painting. The canvas is simply a surface

to work on and uses chalk extracted from the local landscape as a markmaking tool. Chalk is a material that will always leave a trace when handled and the tonal range found in the white chalk underpins this new piece of work. White often references ideas of wholeness, neutrality and purity within western culture. It can create an equal balance for all other colours. Its ability to reflect colour means it can amplify light throughout the space it occupies.
