Davis as the town’s building inspector, health officer, zoning administrator and code enforcement officer. Polk County decided to allocate funds to hire a new economic development director in next year’s budget, which begins July 1. Traber says his time so far in Columbus has been spent looking into possible downtown renovations, historical designations, zoning matters and code enforcement. “I’m trying to initiate new projects that will improve the life and vitality of the downtown area,” Traber said. Traber also said since Columbus is the county seat, he hopes to integrate the town into Polk County’s newly organized economic development commission’s efforts to help strengthen Columbus’ tax base and tourism. Traber said he wants to rejuvenate Columbus’ former downtown merchants association. “I love the job and the people,” Traber said, “and am hoping we can get everybody to work together.” Town officials say they are pleased with their decision to hire a part-time planner and Traber fits the town’s needs. “Larry is doing a tremendous job for us so far,” said Columbus Town Manager Jonathan Kanipe. “As a semi-retired architect, he has a wealth of experience from both a land planning and design perspective and has really helped us develop some good projects that are also feasible.” Kanipe also said Traber is handling the regular business of zoning permits and zoning ordinance interpretation and is doing a great job with that as well. Traber is in the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays and also works with the town’s planning board.

Pesci withdraws from BMW Charity Pro-Am, citing scheduling conflicts According to BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament officials, actor Joe Pesci has withdrawn from the 2011 BMW Charity Pro-Am golf tournament because of unforeseen scheduling conflicts. Pesci is currently filming the movie “Gotti,” based on the life of mafia mob boss John Gotti. “It is unfortunate that Joe won’t be joining us, but we understand,” said Darin Mac-

Donald, tournament director. “They participate out of the goodness of their hearts, and when their schedules change, we understand that their work takes precedence.” The 23 celebrities now scheduled to compete in this year’s tournament are Lucas Black, Brad Brownell, Mark Bryan, Andy Buckley, Javier Colon, Jeffrey Donovan, Don Felder, Colt Ford, Bruce Green-

wood, Wayne Gretzky, Oliver Hudson, Janet Jones-Gretzky, Josh Kelley, Greg Kinnear, Cheech Marin, Rob Morrow, Terry O’Quinn, Michael Pena, Joe Don Rooney, Kevin Sorbo, Danny Sullivan, Gary Valentine and Patrick Warburton. Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is a Jewish celebration that is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration, most notably marked with the lighting of the menorah. The menorah is a candleholder that holds nine candles; the main eight candles and a “helper” candle called a shamash, which is used to light all eight candles. This tradition is derived from a story found in the Talmud about a man named Judas Maccabaeus, or Judah Maccabee. Around 170 B.C., the ruler Epiphanes tried to force the Greek gods upon the Jews. Hats Off tO tHe Graduates!

3

Each year thousands of students gather for their commencement ceremonies, or graduation. Graduation is the acceptance of an educational degree or diploma, or the passing from one grade level to the next. Preschool children often have a miniature graduation ceremony, marking their passing to Kindergarten. Teenage students that have completed all school requirements receive their high school diplomas at graduation, and college and university students of all ages receive degrees each year at commencement ceremonies. To complete a course of study is considered a great achievement. Graduates traditionally receive money as a gift to pay for college expenses or to repay college loans. Parties with families and friends are often held in the graduate’s honor. At the ceremony, traditional dress of a cap and gown is worn by the candidate for commencement. Once they have received their degree from a school official, they traditionally move the tassel on their 4 Sovle the cap, or mortarboard, from the right side to puzzle the left side, symbolizing their passing from using the a candidate for graduation to an actual gradclues uate. Polk managed to draw back to even in their half of the third. Leadoff hitter Overholt legged out an infield single, quickly swiped second and then scored on a booming sacrifice fly to deep center by Booker, knotting the score at three all. An Overholt throwing error, a single by shortstop Ben Temple and an intentional walk loaded the bases with Falcons in the top of the sixth. DH Dustin Moore wrestled an inside pitch from Taft off the handle into shallow right for an RBI single, putting Forbush back on top 4-3. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, down by a run and just one out away from elimination, Booker stepped into the box and came up clutch, lashing a hard ground ball just under the glove of shortstop

Temple. With the tying run at first, big brother Tyler strode to the plate and crushed a Faircloth fastball to deep left field for an RBI double. He took third as Booker scored to tie the game at four. As the senior Philpott left the field in favor of a pinch runner, he took his younger brother aside and whispered the gamewinning wisdom that contributed to the storybook finish. “There is definitely some magic here,” said Polk head coach Ty Stott, referring to the Wolverine’s perfect 12-0 playoff record at home. “Magic that has been developed with success, developed over time – I felt like we had that magic tonight.” The Wolverines travel to Canton this afternoon, Tuesday May 17, to take on the Bears of Pisgah High School as they advance to the second round of the state 2A playoffs.
