Blue Ridge BBQ and Music Festival 'hog of a hit' Weekend crowds light by Leah Justice

The crowds may have been down slightly at this year’s Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival, but with costs cut,

organizers say the event was still a success. Although the weather was hot and humid Friday and Saturday, there were no heavy rains either day. Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce President Andy

Millard says crowds may have been smaller, but the people who came had a great time. Millard said the main parking lot was never full. He said in previous years with much hotter weather, he's seen the main lot as well as two overflow

lots full. Earlier this year the chamber of commerce announced that it would not hold the event this year. The community rallied and the chamber (Continued on page 3)

Polk County looks to hook up to Lake Lure water Idea could give Sunny View fire department public water source by Leah Justice

An idea posed this week by Polk County commissioner Warren Watson could alleviate some water source issues in Sunny View. Commissioners decided to look into purchasing water from nearby Lake Lure to give Sunny View Fire and Rescue a public water source.

The county has been discussing the lack of public water for the fire department the last few meetings. Sunny View recently requested a tax increase for next fiscal year in order to secure more ponds with dry hydrants. The county had planned a public hearing to determine whether residents support a tax increase and to get ideas on what residents want in terms of water sources. The

• BBQ festival (continued from page 1)

changed its mind after 85 people and organizations pledged $1,000 each for the chamber's “rainy day” fund, so the festival was almost guaranteed not to lose everything. Profits from the huge event have dwindled, with last year’s profit being only about $12,000. The chamber decided to cut costs this year wherever possible. The festival’s ending fireworks were cut out of this year’s festival, and other cuts were made such as fewer golf carts and less advertising. Barbecue steering committee members bought T-shirts for organizers to wear and some volunteers paid for their own golf carts to cut costs. Millard says due to those cuts, the festival should have come out on top financially this year, although the final numbers aren't known yet.

The festival was also down on volunteers, but the festival went smoothly, according to Millard. “The benefit the community gets from the festival was there,” said Millard. Millard said organizers plan to have healthy discussions regarding the festival and its future over the next couple of months to see where the chamber goes from here with the festival. “As we have these discussions it’s going to be necessary to hear from everyone,” he said. Millard said there are some in the community who don’t want to lose the festival and others who think it’s bad for the community and he wants to hear from every point of view. “I’m keeping a completely open mind at this point,” he said. Attendance and profit numbers were not available as of press time yesterday.

Call Dan at Polk County Manager Ryan 864-237-7306 today! Whitson said he spoke with a Lake Lure official on Monday who said he was interested, but it would depend on what city council wanted and if there is enough capacity. Polk officials said they think the Town of Lake Lure gets its water from Lake Lure. Sunny View Elementary School, which currently depends on wells could also benefit from Lake Lure water. In addition, residents along Hwy. 9 could have the option of connecting to public water. About 25 houses and businesses are located along the route to the school. Watson told commissioners that he is uncertain when or whether the county will run a water line in Sunny View. He said the county should consider what it did in Green Creek, which was purchasing water from someone else. Polk County has developed a water system in the Green Creek area after agreeing for the Broad River Water Authority to connect through Polk with the Inman Campobello Water District (ICWD). Polk owns the main line through the county and is able to extend water lines and purchase water from ICWD for Polk customers. The county has also purchased Lake Adger and is plan-

jbtrees - page 10

ning to construct a water plant at transfer station property in the future once about 1,000 customers are secured. “With future water along this section of Hwy. 9 in Polk County so far into the future, it just seems like a logical thing to consider,” said Watson. He added that he knows it can’t happen in the upcoming budget year, but he doesn’t want to wait until next budget year to begin considering options. The distance between the Lake Lure water tower and the Sunny View school and fire department is just over 2½ miles. use new logo Sunny View Fire Chief Mareffective ty McGuinn and assistant 2/8/10 chief Bob Shepherd said having the public water option would help a great deal. Sunny View fire officials and commissioners said that some remote areas in Sunny View would still need additional ponds with dry hydrants. Watson also said that in the future the partnership could mean Lake Lure could eventually purchase water from Polk County once Lake Adger is being used as Polk’s water source. He said once the economy gets healthier and development rises in Lake Lure, the town may not have enough capacity. Since the lines will already be there, Lake Lure could easily get water from Polk. “It would be a great relationship and would show the state we’re trying to collaborate with other areas,” Watson said. Commissioners and Whitson discussed what the costs could be on Monday. Whitson said based on other estimates within the county for a 12-inch line, it could cost about $400,000. Whitson estimated a meter and vault at $100,000. Commissioners directed Whitson to research what the costs would be for the line and fire hydrants along the route.

County increases board to 13 members by Leah Justice

Polk County will not have any problems filling a new committee to create a unified development ordinance (UDO) for the county. Commissioners last week expressed their gratitude to 15 residents who applied for the newly established committee. The board decided to increase the membership from two planning board members to three and from five visioning committee members to eight because of the response. Two county commissioners,

Renée McDermott and Ray Gasperson, will also serve on the board. The committee will develop a UDO that combines all existing ordinances. The committee will also be charged with recommending updates to ordinances instituting action plans from the comprehensive plan. Polk approved a comprehensive land use plan referred to as the county’s “Vision 20/20” plan recently that instituted community input and a countywide survey. Commissioners will choose members for the UDO committee during their June 21 meeting.

“Considering the way word got around, we’re pleased to have 123 people behind bars,” said Sheriff’s Department Public Information Officer Tony Ivey. Ivey said the county was divided into quadrants – northeast, northwest, southwest and southeast – as 16 undercover officers began the operation that targeted drug traffickers suspected of dealing marijuana, crack and meth. “I don’t think we’ll ever win the war on drugs, but that has nothing to do with how we fight,” said Sheriff Chuck Wright.

North Carolina Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced today that more than 13,254 drivers and passengers were cited for seat belt and child passenger safety violations during the “Click It or Ticket” campaign, which began May 24 and ended June 6. “As the summer travel season begins, this campaign served as a reminder to always buckle up,” said Conti. “I thank all the law enforcement agencies that dedicated their time to ensuring North Carolinians stayed safe over the Memorial Day holiday.” State and local law enforcement officers issued the citations 2x7 than 8,000 checkduring more points and 4/27stepped-up patrols. offers tribute to ‘Pop’ pioneers

Fresh from a triumphant run in Orlando Florida at the Winter Park Playhouse in May of 2010, Wendy Hayes brings her show-stopping cabaret, Ladies And Gentlemen to Flat Rock Playhouse. In this one-woman show, Hayes pays tribute to the “pioneers of pop” with nods to celebrated artists such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Connie Francis, and Peggy Lee, just to name a few. From performing in small jazz clubs in Tokyo to making concert and club appearances throughout the southeast and performing on cruise ships as a headliner, Hayes has wowed audiences around the world with her velvety voice and lusty interpretations. Hayes attended Appalachian State University where she received Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees in Vocal Performance. She received additional training at Oberlin’s Institute of Vocal Performance Pedagogy with Richard Miller. While at ASU she was a two-time winner of the University’s prestigious concerto-aria competition and three time winner of NCNATS and Southeastern Regional NATS Vocal competitions. notice oF PUbLic H Flat Rock Playhouse is located at 2661 Greenville Hwy in inMAn-cAMPobeLLo WA Flat Rock,oPerAtinG NC. Andy Conner, also a rising junior, will serve as the alternate. Both students will attend the North Carolina Leadership Seminar to be held in June at N.C. State University in Raleigh. Hosted by the Charlotte Jaycees, the North Carolina Leadership Seminar was established by the Hugh O’Brian Youth Foundation in 1976. Its purpose is to provide a struc-

tured setting for rising high school juniors to interact with recognized local, state and national leaders of business, education, the arts, government and the professions to gain a better understanding of the problems, challenges and rewards existing in today’s world. Students are nominated as Youth Leadership Ambassadors based on their leadership potential, ability to work well with others, desire for new pursuits and willingness to learn and share their experiences with other young people. – article submitted

Jean Wright, Tryon Painters and Sculptors, hangs an original painting in the hall at St. Luke’s Hospital. (photo submitted)

More art requested for hallways at St. Luke’s Hospital Coordinated by the Tryon Painters and Sculptors (TPS), St. Luke’s Hospital’s revolving exhibit changes approximately every three months. What once was a small exhibit has more than doubled to 63 pieces representing 29 artists. The art exhibit has expanded from only covering the St. Luke’s back hall to now including the inpatient hallway leading to the nurse’s station as well as the Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center lobby. The St. Luke’s Outpatient Rehab Center would also like to be included in this art rotation. This will require many additional works of art so TPS has extended an invitation to exhibit to other artists in the community. Anyone interested in displaying an oil painting, a watercolor, or a sculpture that can hang on a wall, call Jean Wright with TPS at 828-859-8322 or St. Luke’s Hospital PR at 828-894-2408. To be included in the exhibit, TPS will need the artwork information (title, artist) by Tuesday, June 15, and the artwork will need to be delivered to the classroom at St. Luke’s Hospital on

Wednesday, June 16 or after 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 17. TPS has made a bit of progress formalizing the “rules” for this exhibit: • Open to members and nonmembers of Tryon Painters and Sculptors. • Because the exhibit is in a public space, nudes are not appropriate. • Participants must sign a St Luke’s Hospital liability waiver. • Contact information for the artist is provided (if desired) with the tag for each piece. The artist is responsible for any sale of art. A piece may be removed from the exhibit when it is sold, but we ask that you advise the coordinator so we can find a replacement. “We’re extremely pleased to provide a venue for local artists to display their talent, but we’re also hopeful that these original paintings are truly healing arts,” said Ken Shull, St. Luke’s Hospital CEO. “Not only will staff and visitors appreciate creative expressions, I know our patients have and will benefit greatly.” – article submitted

for freedom in past wars. Many local business, churches, restaurants, and grocery stores volunteered food and supplies and donations to make sales of all food go 100 percent to help the soldiers. An army of about 30 volunteers ranging from hot dog and corn cooks, to singers to dishwashers helped bring the event together. Meghan Yarboro volunteered to head up the baked goods sale, something that was dear to her since her husband Hunter is currently in Afghanistan serving a tour of duty. Food sales including hot dogs, roasted corn, baked goods, drinks, etc. as well as a cake auction and other donations raised $3,100 to purchase additional personal items for the troops as well as paying shipping costs. Nearly 50 boxes of items such as socks, CDs, lip balm, sanitizer, snacks and toiletries were collected and packed at the event to send to the troops overseas. Music from the Green River Boys, Soldiers for the Cross and the Jason Camp Family entertained the crowd of all ages. If anyone would like to contribute items or monetary donations they can be dropped off at WJFJ radio anytime of the year. The next event will be scheduled around Veterans Day in November. All items are sent to chaplains serving in Iraq, who in turn distribute the items to the troops in the field. The chaplains also send updated want lists from time to time to keep organizer Sherry Carney informed as to their needs. – article submitted

A Memorial to Wayne Burgess

ws

ws

Into the arms of Jesus Wayne fell on that Friday morn His earthly life had ended His Heavenly one was born. A community left in shock A family heart-broken with grief A host of friends standing in awe Heads bowed in disbelief. Wayne cared for his fellow man Helping when they were down A heart filled with loving kindness Added stars to his shining Crown. The joybells of Heaven were ringing As angels ushered Wayne home The saints of all ages were singing God's praises around the white throne. As he entered the portals of glory Seeing loved ones who had gone before Meeting face-to-face with his Savior Blessed Peace is his evermore. We shall meet again. A devoted Aunt, Vanelle Wilson Submitted by Kay & Doris
