The town faces new debt service on $300,000 of financing for a joint Columbus, Saluda, Tryon project to construct a new water line from Tryon to Saluda. The town is also incurring new debt for approximately $3 million in financing to rehabilitate its water plant. Once council directed town manager Justin Hembree to propose a budget with no increases, Hembree set forth a phased-in expense reduction plan that includes the possibility of not rehiring employees who may retire early. “Strategies included in the plan range from across-theboard budget reductions to the abolishment of positions,”

Councilmen Roy Miller, Doug Arbogast and Wim Woody were not in favor of that idea. “We’re not rewarding people for recycling, so we shouldn’t penalize for not recycling,” Miller said. Miller previously said this week that the town’s recycling rate is fairly high and it continues to grow. He has maintained that the town needs to educate residents about what can be recycled before making recycling mandatory. The town’s budget adopted Tuesday includes $1,544,041 in the general fund and $2,642,620 in the water and sewer fund. The town’s fire tax will remain the same at 4.8 cents per $100 of valuation and the town’s tax rate will remain the same at 47.78 cents per $100 of valuation. The Harmon Field tax is also unchanged. The town’s new fiscal year begins July 1.

At first, I did not know why we were moving to America. Then again, I was only six years old and life felt like a giant playground. My parents later explained that we were moving to America because it was the land of opportunities. In America we would start life anew. your future is truly limitless and bright,” she said. “Be proud of who you are and what you believe in and never let anyone or any situation persuade you to compromise. Congratulations on achieving this milestone." Lilly thanked many of her family members for getting to the moment as well as Polk County for being her family. She spoke of the importance of being thankful, enjoying nature, loving and forgiving. “Be content in life. Stop wasting your time wishing and wanting and just do it, be it,” Lilly told her fellow graduates. Lilly said she feels the most vibrant when she is out in nature and urged graduates to get connected with Mother Nature. She said she personally is a vegetarian because of how great it makes her feel and by no means is she implying everyone should become vegans, “but think about all the life that is packed into a tomato versus the life that’s in a Twinkie. It’s a simple choice. Instead of watching a sitcom, choose to watch the sunrise.”

(Continued on page 7)

Fitch said he he has lived no longer than other graduates so he has no words of wisdom to impart on other graduates, “so, rather than attempt to deliver a message of inspiration, I will endeavor to deliver one of hope.” Fitch said his hopes for graduates’ future are respect, good health, friendship, love, passion and happiness. “Thus, that is what I hope for … for all of us… not for wealth, success, nor glory,” Fitch said, “but for respect, for health of mind, body, and spirit, for friendship, for love, and for passion in life. Because by yearning for these, I hope for happiness.” Tiffany Blackburn spoke of teachers who helped graduates get to this point in their lives, including Mrs. Bradley and Mr. Brumley in middle school and Mrs. Newton, Mrs. Allsbrook and Mr. Picher in high school. “To speak honestly, these last few years have been enlightening, invigorating, unnerving, and unbelievable, and I would like to thank my teachers, family, friends, administrators, and fellow students for making them memorable,” Blackburn said.

When I stepped into America I had no idea how to speak the language. I didn’t even know what small basic words meant. Nor was I familiar with any traditions, customs, or American mannerisms. My family and I were basically dropped into a new world with very limited connections, very limited knowledge, and only a slight clue of what to do next, but truly believed hard work would get us there. Starting school was quite a challenge for me, mostly because of the language barrier. A couple weeks into school, I came home crying that kids did not want to play with me. Letter to the Editor

Who exactly wants to arrest citizens for uttering ‘God and Country?’ To the Editor: I was touched by the tributes and remembrances for Memorial Day in the TDB, including some of the thoughts shared by Mr. Rizzo. However, his remark that we “live in a world where there are some who would have you arrested for using (the words

Maddie Gates

upon admission to Furman, to receive a merit and other renewable scholarships from the university. – article submitted God and Country) in the same sentence” seemed gratuitous and puzzling. Color me skeptical. Who, exactly, wants to arrest citizens for uttering “God and Country?” Does Mr. Rizzo sincerely believe this, or was it intended as a bit of hyperbole? It strikes me that the construct “there are some who ...” is a hoary, overused tactic. Here, it trivializes a legitimate civic conversation about the U.S. Constitution and the role of religion in public life, and I was sad to see it sully an otherwise eloquent letter. – Ken Rossen

Even a ten minute downpour at the beginning of Saturday’s benefit for The Children’s Security Blanket couldn’t dampen the spirit of giving to families with gravely ill children. A spirited crowd of over 200 sat under the covered arena and were treated to some 2x7 talented equestrians who volunteered their time to wonderfully put on a fabulous and fun show of top level freestyle dressage, 4/27 driving and eight member quad drill. The show started off with BBBr-035801 the Green Creek Hounds coming down the hill and into the arena so spectators had an up close and personal look at these unique representatives of an ancient sport. Then it was off to the ballroom to watch the Belmont Stakes and enjoy an evening with delicious food and drink. Every single item was donated, so every penny went directly into the charity’s coffers. Fishing report from Lake Adger Hot weather has arrived this week, but fishing in the mornings and afternoons is still producing fish. Top water baits are the most productive during this hot spell. Jitterbugs, devil horse or buzz baits all seem to be producing. Crappie have moved a little closer to shade or structure, but once located are easy to catch. Bream fishing will remain strong all summer, but will be the best around full moon each month. Catfish will also be easy to catch; late in the day or night fishing produces the best catches. Livers and stink baits are the most popular. Good luck. Updated from Ken Haynes, Silver Creek Campground. Boating The next “Safe Boating Class” is scheduled for July 7 from 6p.m.9p.m. for two consecutive nights, at the Columbus Rescue Squad. Toby Jenkins will be teaching the class. His email is: toby.jenkins@ ncwildlife.org. You must preregister to attend this class. Sponsored in conjunction with the North Carolina Renaissance, this newly established program invites rural high school students, who are academically inclined and who show student leadership qualities, to the University of North Carolina campus for a special one-week enrichment

program. The goals of the program are to inspire gifted young scholars to pursue their educational dreams, and to broaden the scope of their experiences as they look to the future. Students will participate in sessions exploring teambuilding, college admissions, financial aid, the Ackland Art Museum and community service. – article submitted

Lesson 78: Save as much as you can, starting now If you would be wealthy, been put off while working, and think of saving as well as get- you have a recipe for higher ting. expenses in the golden years. —Benjamin Franklin Now back to the cost of This may seem a little pre- retirement. Because they have the money you save today will more time on their hands. be worth more than the money They’re not tied up at work five you save later. Here’s what I days a week, and unless they sit mean: at home, there’s a good chance Let’s say you set aside $1,000 they’ll find ways to spend at age 22. It earns 7 percent inmoney. Add to that the desire terest per year, compounded to take some vacations that had monthly. When you retire at,

say, age 65, that $1,000 will be worth about $20,000. By contrast, if you start to save the same $1,000 at 42, it will be worth less than $5,000 when you’re 65. This little illustration shows the power of compounding: as your money grows, you earn interest not just on your original $1,000 but on the interest as well. It takes time for this to work the way it should—the more time, the better. Get in the habit of saving now– and I mean right now. As mentioned earlier, you might think you can’t afford to save right now, but you have to. Figure out a way to do it; you’ll thank me when you’re 65.
