During the week of July 4, the Columbus Police Department, in cooperation with the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program and other law enforcement agencies across the state, participated in the “Operation Firecracker” Booze It & Lose It highway safety campaign. During this period, officers with the Columbus Police Department arrested five impaired drivers and cited 10 speeders, two uninsured motorists, three reckless drivers, and four individuals for driving while licensed revoked. During the same period, the Columbus Police Department transported 10 prisoners, including apprending one wanted individual, and one felony ar-

rest. Four drug violations and 10 other criminal violations were also charged. Officials say no other criminal offense is responsible for as many deaths and injuries or as much property damage than driving while impaired. In fact, they say, impaired drivers injure or kill a person every minute in the United States. North Carolina ranks seventh in the nation for DWI related deaths, and 31 percent of fatal crashes were determined to be alcohol related. Columbus police officials say they hope everyone had a happy and safe July 4th celebration and remind everyone always to buckle up, obey the speed limit and never drink and drive.

Spartanburg County grew 12.7 percent, from 254,418 in 2000 to an estimated 286,822 in 2009. In 2009, there were 309.6 million people in the United States, the census estimates. “Obviously, part of this is a national trend,” said Tryon Mayor Alan Peoples regarding his town’s population decline. “The birth rate in the United States is down.” In addition to aging out, Peoples said Tryon also faces home buyers’ decisions regarding taxation inside the city and outside. Living just a few feet outside the town limits saves thousands on an average tax bill, he said. “With the death rate and the inside/outside factor, we are losing population faster than we are gaining,” he said. State sales taxes and vehicle taxes are paid to muncipalities based on population, so Peoples said the loss of 51 residents negatively affects the town budget.

The town lost another ten residents to post an estimated population of 1,709 in 2009. Growth in Polk County, which registered 26.5 percent, rising from 14,416 in 1990 to 18,234 in 2000, slowed over the past nine years, according to census estimates. One man's trash is another's treasure

Once upon a time, not so long ago, a local couple

happened upon a skinny little Appaloosa mare in a dirt lot. Her owner no longer wanted to trail ride her; she wasn’t needed any more. Luckily this couple knew a few things about horses and decided to take her home with them and find the little mare a new family. Some extra food, good grass and a few trail rides later this couple put an ad up in the local feed store. At this very same time, a sweet “horse crazy” young girl had convinced her parents to let her take some riding lessons. She caught the bug and now dreamed of having her own horse. After some poking and prodding her parents answered an ad they found at the local feed store: an Appaloosa mare – for sale! The little girl, whose name is Amanda, met the little mare, who’s name is Nia, and as most dreams happen (when they come true) it was destined they be together.

Raised beds at senior center provide fresh vegetables, recreation Volunteers still needed to tend

“We have some vegetable plants and we want to garden with them.” “I’d like to add fresh vegetables to the meals we serve.” That first sentence spoken by a few of the senior citizen participants at The Meeting Place in Columbus coupled with the second sentence spoken by its nutritionist Lula McDowell, sparked an idea in Pam Doty’s mind this past winter. Pam Doty is director of The Meeting Place, and these two ideas hatched a plan culminating in the beginnings of their New Kitchen Garden being installed this spring. “Many of the participants at The Meeting Place love to garden,” notes Pam “but due to various health or safety issues can no longer do so at their homes. Yet studies show keeping active with hobbies like gardening reap huge benefits for them.” What the participants of The Meeting Place needed was a safe place to

garden that did not include bending over and the risk of falling. A visit to White Oak provided the inspiration. “I was at White Oak one day and saw the raised beds they’d installed in their kitchen garden and thought they would be perfect.” says Pam. “I wasn’t sure how to build them so I approached Paul Zimmerman, as I knew he had a back round in landscaping.” After researching other gardens built for senior citizens and the unique needs to be addressed, Paul came up with simple raised beds out of 6”x6” square timbers. “The most pressing needs for a garden like this” comments Zimmerman, “are for beds that don’t require bending over to reach, are strong enough to lean on and have a frame wide enough to sit and garden from. “The 6”x6” timbers give us all that and we reinforced them on the inside with stakes to make them even stronger.” After Pam gave the green light, (Continued on page 9)

After the soil was delivered Sheriff Donald Hill loaned a Deputy and several trustees to load the soil into the raised beds. Vaughan found some people willing to provide vegetable plants and within a few weeks the beds were planted. “We feed somewhere between 100-120 seniors a day in the county and for many of them it is the only hot meal they get”, says Pam. “We plan to add more beds and expand the plantings to fruit trees, berry vines and other foods so we can provide those seniors with healthy, fresh meals.” Lynn (Continued on page 11)

Vaughan Loeffler (above) and his brother, Paul, donated their labor and tools and built four raised beds at The Meeting Place.

The Hay Rack in Landrum agreed to provide the lumber at cost and Hensons Inc. in Tryon did the same for the soil to fill the beds. “I see seniors come in every day who garden regularly and you can see the good things it does for their health”, adds the Hay Rack’s owner Don Williams. “I felt this was something we as members of the community should get behind.” Paul and Vaughan Loeffler donated their labor and tools and over the course of a week four beds measuring 8’ x 4’ were installed.

Siblings Little Sister Hai’lee and Little Brother Don’tae have been matched through Big Brothers Big Sisters to their Bigs, Lynn and Bob Montgomery. Some of their outings have included going to plays at the Flat Rock Playhouse, eating at area restaurants, attending church socials and area festivals, going on hikes and a boat ride, and getting ice cream. During the summer months, there’s nothing like a dip in the pool to cool off! BS Lynn encourages Hai’lee and Don’tae to strengthen their swimming skills

by having them dive for coins and showing them how to float and practice their swim strokes. There are children, especially boys, on the Big Brothers Big Sisters waiting list who need a Big Brother or Big Sister for a community-based match. During the summer, BBBS also recruits new volunteer Bigs to serve as mentors in a school-based match at local elementary schools one hour each week. For more information on how you can help, call BBBS at 828859-9230. – article submitted

Pickard to exhibit in Saluda Guests will have a chance to meet Beverly Bowden Pickard at the Wine Cellar this Thursday, July 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. Her paintings will be on display from Thursday to Saturday. Pickard has been a lifelong student and teacher of art, beginning her lessons at age eight, and continuing with a college degree in art. Along with teaching public and private classes, she has donated her time and knowledge to local students. Now a permanent Saluda resident, Pickard spent her summers here finding inspiration for her paintings. When she was in college in Memphis in the late 50s, Pickard spent summers in Burnsville, N.C., at an art camp called Seecelo. She bonded with the area’s mountains, continued paint-
