This suspect was captured on surveillance video robbing the First Citizens Bank and Trust in Landrum Monday afternoon. He was wearing a red ball cap and sunglasses and carrying a backpack. back window broken out. The suspect reportedly jumped into the back of the truck, which also had a aluminum fifth wheel tailgate. The suspect did not show a weapon while in the bank, Shelnut said. No one was injured. The driver of the truck was described as a white male. The tag number of the truck ended in, “4EY,” but witnesses did not identify the remainder of the tag or the state. Police officers from Landrum and other area police departments were watching local banks yesterday. The Landrum Police Department is investigating the robbery and the FBI is also involved. The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office has also assisted. Monday’s robbery is the third robbery of the First Citi-

zens Bank, located on North Trade Avenue downtown. The bank was robbed sometime in the early 1990s, with the suspect being caught later. Several years ago, the bank was robbed again, and no arrests have been made yet. It was unknown as of yesterday whether the Landrum bank robbery was related to another robbery that occurred at the First Piedmont Federal Savings Bank in downtown Spartanburg, S.C., around 10 a.m. Monday, but authorities say they do not believe the two robberies were related. The suspect in that case was a white male, 45 to 50 years old, who was wearing a tie-dyed T-shirt, a hat and sunglasses and left in an older-model Toyota pickup truck. Anyone with information regarding the robbery or anyone who may know the subject is urged to contact the Landrum Police Department at 864-4577281.

Cary was listed at No. 23 and Chapel Hill was ranked 40th in the country among cities with populations between 50,000 and 300,000. The towns were the only two from North Carolina to make the list this year. The rankings took into account factors such as job growth, cost of living, crime rates, school quality, cultural attractions, recreational offerings and qualityof-life measurements such as average commute time and air quality. The top four small cities on the Money list were Eden Prairie, Minn.; Columbia/Ellicott City, Md.; Newton, Mass., and Bellevue, Wash.

John Lewis and Eric Whiteside of the Landrum Business Station Project made a presentation to the Landrum City Council this week on an online marketing project for the city. Duke Energy

Duke Energy Corp. ranks highest among Southern power providers for residential customer satisfaction, according to a survey by J.D. Power and Associates. Lower electric bills and greater reliability of service led to generally higher satisfaction scores from last year, J.D. Power says. The study measures customer satisfaction with electric utilities by considering six factors: power quality and reliability, price, billing and payment, corporate citizenship, communications and customer service. J.D. Power scores utilities on a 1,000-point score. The average was 630 this year, up from 618 in 2009. Duke Energy Carolinas scored 656 points, edging out Oklahoma Gas & Electric Co. (NYSE:OGE), CPS Energy and 11 other large utilities in the South.

Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers operated in Tryon from 1915-1940. The company focused on two operations: the toy makers created small, painted wooden figurines based on classic nursery rhymes, while the carvers created mantles', furniture, church altars and other specialized wooden pieces. The toys and wood carvings were created based on traditional European designs and were not typical Appalachian crafts of the time, but many of the region's well-known carvers began perfecting their craft while working with the Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers. "The Tryon Toy-Makers were very important to the regional craft movement of the early 20th century," said Helen Wykle, UNC Asheville Ramsey Library Special Collections coordinator. The Ramsey Library has a collection of 118 drawings and documents detailing the history of the Tryon Toy Makers and Wood Carvers. The collection was a donation from Elizabeth Scruggs, daughter of master woodcarver and Polk County native Pauline Miller Cowan, who was a well-known carver for Tryon Toy-Makers and Wood-Carvers.

The city pledged an additional $50,000 for the project and received another $50,000 grant from Spartanburg County.

Wolverines gain preseason honors by John Clayton

polk County senior quarterback andre overholt leads a contingent of Wolverines who have garnered preseason honors from the N.C. prep Football News yearbook. overholt was chosen by the publication as the Western Highlands Conference 2a preseason player of the Year after a junior season that included more than 1,500 combined yards and 23 touchdowns despite missing sig-

nificant time with a broken arm. the publication also selected overholt, offensive tackle tyler philpott and linebacker J.J. Maxwell to its preseason Class 2a all-state team. the Wolverines, who have been picked to finish first in the preseason coaches’ poll, return four all-conference players from last season – overholt (2009 offensive player of the Year), philpott, Maxwell and ryan thomas.

Offensive lineman Tyler Philpott (55) was among Polk County High School’s three preseason all-state selections by the N.C. Prep Football News Yearbook. (staff photo)

It took a little more than horsepower and speed for Mill spring’s george Bowland dethrone a local hero at the giants Despair Hillclimb in Laurel run, pa. Bowland said a little pre-race strategy helped as well. the veteran racer, who began racing in auto-cross 31 years ago and started hill-climb events three years later, showed up just before registration closed for giants Despair. Bowland said that move flustered Darryl Danko, the race’s five-time defending champion and registrar who lives at the top of the very hill that is climbed each year. “You see a lot of older guys in this sport – and that’s why,” said

coming, but they didn’t know. a buddy of mind said he’d split the late entry fee with me if I showed up at the last minute, and we’re the only ones who knew I was going.” giants Despair is contested along a mile-long, six-turn course with a finish line that sits 650 feet

above the start. Bowland said the agility of his 300-horsepower, home-fabricated racer proved to be the difference against the 1973 gurney eagle driven by Danko. “I was faster in the turns and that was the difference,” said (Continued on page 15)

BBQ’s future in mixer again The Carolinas Foothills Chamber of Commerce is once again facing a decision regarding the future of the Blue Ridge Barbecue & Music Festival. The 17th annual festival was held last month, after a short-lived cancellation last January, and it was profitable. estimates are that the festival made $30,000. In addition, a national firm was hired to poll those attending the festival. A total of 428 people filled out surveys commenting on the festival, as well as where how much money they spent to attend. Based on that data, at least some of the BBQ team members are estimating that the festival generated $1.2 million in economic activity. about half of that, according to the analysis, would be money which stayed in the community - goods and services sold to the chamber to run the event, and goods and services sold — outside the festival — to all those who attended. economic impact statistics are easy to compile, hard to prove. Nonetheless, it seems clear the festival generated significant economic activity for the community, and put a nice profit in the chamber’s bank account. Tonight, the chamber board takes up a request from peter eisenbrown, the festival music chairman and spokesperson for all those who wish to see the BBQ continue. Based on the profit and economic impact, Eisenbrown says, a vote for continuation seems clear. There are a few hesitations still, according to chamber leaders. One is, who? Who will run the event? a survey was sent to chamber members asking if they support continuation, and, if so, will they personally step up to run it. Some folks are going to have to spend the rest of 2010, and six months of 2011 putting the next festival together. Some of the stalwart “captains” of the festival are tired, and won’t return, and a general to run the entire effort has not been identified. Tryon has a successful, proven event. Here’s hoping we find its next set of leaders. — JB

damage has already been done. However, this is a plea to the community of Tryon, my chosen community, to help prevent future affronts to the uniqueness of our town. at the least, please think about why you live in this area and what you will lose if the historic character of the town continually declines. Think about where you will be without the individual contributions of our locally owned and designed businesses. We really have so much for such a small town.

But we don’t have to sit back and watch our town’s character erode. The construction of the Dollar general was a rude awakening for me and I now understand the importance of being involved in my community, instead of simply enjoying it. I plan to figure out how I can serve my community, to help maintain what drew me to the area, instead of just benefiting from the opportunities afforded to me here. anyone else? – Meghan Johnson
