Southern Gospel charts are compiled by airplay surveys of nearly 100 radio stations nationwide, including stations in Maine, Michigan, Florida, Washington, Oklahoma and other states. Metcalf is no stranger to the national Southern Gospel music industry. In 2004 and 2005, Metcalf was nominated as a top ten small market Southern Gospel DJ in the fan voted "Singing News Fan Awards." The same song, "The Great Physician's Hand," was also on the Snow Covered Mound CD of the Bluegrass group The Principles. The CD was nominated in the Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards as Bluegrass Album of the Year. Metcalf has had nearly a dozen songs recorded by national and local gospel groups in the past 15 years, including three by Upright. However, this is the first of Metcalf's songs to make the top 40 charts. Locally, Metcalf is known as lead singer of the Green River Boys, a Bluegrass Gospel group, and as an afternoon disc jockey for WJFJ Radio in Columbus.

Tryon awarded $15k grant for former depot renovations by Leah Justice

jtfixitman@gmail.com

Wednesday, September 01, 2010

The Town of Tryon was recently awarded a $15,000 N.C. Rural Economic Development Center grant to study the reuse of its former depot building. The town applied for the grant this summer on behalf of Main Street Financial’s Andy Millard, who is currently renovating the buildng. The town approved a lease with Millard earlier this year for Millard to spend approximately $250,000 to restore the former depot, located on Depot Street downtown. In exchange, Millard will lease the building for $1 per year for 20 years. He plans to move his office and provide other office space there. Plans for the restoration were done by Brady/Trakas Architects and the contractor for the project is Mike Karaman. Renovations began this summer and are expected to

be completed by the end of this year. Tryon’s grant award was part of the rural center’s recent $5 million allocation for job creation and clean water needs. The town was awarded the grant because one job was created through the project. The grants throughout the state will assist communities in 46 rural counties and create a total of 375 jobs. The grants were approved on Aug. 25 and were made possible by appropriations of the N.C. General Assembly. The town’s depot was originally constructed around 1906. Millard is planning for the building to consist of three offices and a reception area and he plans to keep the “freight” room as an assembly room that will include a catering kitchen. Plans are also for the freight room to serve as a depot museum.

Welcome to September Saluda notes and notations! Subtly and steadily, shortening days whisper those coming fall changes...delicate tracings of spider webs sparkle in cool mornings, crickets become more vocal, leaves start to show brushes of color as apples ripen in orchards. September is a time of thought, of remembering. Upcoming events: Plans are underway for the annual barbecue originally started years ago by Charlie Ward; it’s scheduled for September 11, 2010 at Sept live music, good food, and lots of great people make this a fun and well-attended event in the spirit of Charlie. Of course, donations and volunteers are needed, so if you’re interested in being part of the planning or want to contribute, please contact Judy Ward at 828-749-1349. This is always one of the most popular community gettogether events in town! I was digging through some old pictures and found some I’d taken downtown Saluda back in the mid-1990’s for the Bulletin. One was of Charlie hard at work in the store. Speaking of pictures from the past, when I was by City Hall this past week, I noticed the poster on the front door of all our commissioners: with pictures of each one in days past. The Saluda Community Land Trust meets the third Wednesday of the month at 3 p.m. at McCreery Park pavilion. They are always looking for volunteers; as is our Saluda Center. Keep in mind that the Saluda tailgate market with fresh local

produce and other goodies is on Fridays at the city parking lot off Main Street (follow the signs) from 4:30 to 6:30. It will continue into October, so stop by and take advantage of being able to buy local treats. Of course, the visiting is a highlight too. Garden Notes: Don’t forget to keep those hummingbirds supplied with clean feeders: my winged visitors are busy little fellows—impatient when I take the feeders in to clean them and bring fresh nectar out. It’s time to start fall yard work...weed pulling never ends! Compost heaps benefit from some Saluda aeration; I News & add everyNotations thing but the kitchen sink by Bonnie Bardos to mine, including a layer of black and white newspaper now and then. Use caution when out in the yard: yellow jackets often have two entrance holes in the ground: I found that out the hard (ouch!) way. As much as I love the creatures in the yard, I just can’t seem to find a place in my heart for fleas, ticks, slugs, or yellow jackets! Community notes: Please remember the families of Clyde Conner and Russ Vanderlois. Russ is survived by his wife Peggy...you may know them as the owners of Van’s Chocolates in Hendersonville. I always thought his middle name had to be “Belgian Chocolate”. Over the years, I enjoyed many a conversation with Russ, whether it was laughing about the “I Love Lucy” episode when Lucy and Ethel worked in a chocolate factory and ate more than they packed. Russ knew fine chocolate, and he was a good man. Happy Birthday to Carol Kenfield at Autumn Care, and also birthday remembrances to (Continued on page 11)

Tryon House held a customer lottery drawing for gift certificates during the first week of its semi-annual clearance sale. Tryon residents Barbara Salmon and Alicia Ellis each won a gift certificate for merchandise in the store. Seven-year-old Gus Maass, son of Tryon residents Harold Maass and Margaret Curtis, drew the winning tickets. Store owner Mary Wells Prioleau said the drawing was one way Tryon House could thank its customers for their patronage during the past year. “We think our customers need to know how much we appreciate their business, especially in these uncertain economic times,” she commented. Local attorney Lee Stockdale and his son Noah, a rising junior at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, played music in the Trade Street windows of the store during the sale weekend. Founded in 1983, Tryon House has been a long time fixture on Trade Street in downtown Tryon. In addition to clothing for men and women, jewelry and accessories, Tryon House sells many exclusive products featuring Morris, the town horse. Tryon House is open daily,

our world. Soon, he says, we begin to think in emotional terms rather than in verbal terms. Here at Birdland we have a lot of visitors from various parts of the country. Everyone who comes here, it seems, has a comparable experience of relaxing. My oldest son who lives near New York City has said, “Every time we come here I just want to take a nap.” Others have said similar things. The cicadas surrounding our screen porch turn the night into a constant drone of natural sound. Early morning brings a symphony of birdsong. And then a jet flies over from Greenville and we are reminded of that “other” world. When I can avoid complaining verbally about the jet, at least I don’t add to the problem. The phenomenon of natural silence is readily available to us who live here in western North Carolina if we just take the opportunity to access it. Snake Venom Erases Wrinkles

BEVERLY HILLS —Some are calling Vipox® the greatest breakthrough since botulism toxin for eliminating wrinkles. Vipox is an innovative cream which contains a synthetically similar ingredient to Waglerin 1, the peptide found in the venom of the Temple viper. Vipox works similarly to botulism toxin by relaxing contractions in the skin to eliminate wrinkles, crows feet, expression lines and other signs of aging skin. But, unlike botulism toxin, Vipox is not injected and you don’t have to make a doctors appointment to get it. Vipox is applied sparingly to the skin twice daily and is completely safe. in an in vivo clinical study, 30 volunteers (ages 40-60) were divided into two groups. One group applied the Vipox formula and the other group applied a placebo. Both groups applied the creams to their foreheads twice daily. Results showed a significant reduction in wrinkle size within 28 days in the Vipox group and no change in the placebo group. Vipox is available at pharmacies without a prescription or call 1-800339-3301. Now available in columbus at:MEDICAP PHARMACY 80 Shuford Rd • 894-6112

Gracefully aging in the foothills What can you say about a 125-year-old friend whom you met when she was already 104? This weekend the Town of Tryon will celebrate its 125th anniversary, recalling the pioneers who first carved home sites out of the woods, and all those over the past 125 years who have made this area distinct and wonderful. Tryon was a no spring chicken in 1989, when we first caught a ride in Dick Briggs’ single engine plane to come down and have a look at her beautiful hillsides. In the 21 years we’ve observed, change has arrived slowly, incrementally. One day you look around and find things missing, new things in their place, neither better nor worse, just different. In 1989, Jim Cowan was still selling groceries and doing his train whistle. Now, we have Willard Teaster, and Jim still whistling. Phil Edwards was selling men’s clothes, as is Tryon House today. Tryon in the early 1990s seemed just then to be shedding its sleepy, quiet feel as more and more people moved to the area, I-74 was completed and BMW moved in nearby. In the early ‘90s, there were dozens of civic activists promoting causes, mostly aimed at helping people, promoting culture, keeping Tryon special. Most were of the World War II generation, many with an impressive list of prior accomplishments and a gracefulness which can only be built over a lifetime. We boomers have benefitted from them in ways we are only coming to appreciate. Of course, the outstanding Tryonites we met stood in a long line stretching back a century. But the names of those who had done so much for the town in the mid-1900s, were still fresh on everyone’s lips. A few legends were still living in nearby homes, but were aged and rarely seen. Others had only been gone a short while. Their legacies are evident everywhere you look today. It is our turn now. Tryon is a great town, and we must keep her that way. We are lucky to live here. — JB
