Held as the final event of the day, the Pacolet Area Conservancy Hunter Derby will be a tribute to the old fashioned hunter style of jumping over a challenging course of obstacles. The hunter derby will offer an unprecedented $2,500 in prize money. In addition to the lion's share of the prize money, the winner will also receive a beautiful engraved antique hunt scene challenge trophy. Tryon is known throughout the equestrian world as having contributed greatly to the roots of the hunter and jumper horse showing of today. The (Continued on page 4)

Polk County commissioners agreed on the wording above for the sign in front of the new adult day care center. The center is being named after Don and Betsy Freeman in honor of their efforts in support of the opening of an adult day care center in Polk County. (photo submitted)

• Adult day care (continued from page 1)

Renovations are nearing completion, with paving set to begin next week. The center will also be getting new carpet following a recent problem with the sprinkler system that flooded the inside of the building. County manager Ryan Whitson said the county agreed to pay for ¼ of the new carpet costs with the sprinkler company paying the remainder. Commissioners also discussed signage and landscaping. The sign at the front of the building will be placed either on masonry pillars or wooden posts. The landscaping of a circle 50 feet in diameter will be done by the master gardeners,

with both the sign and the plantings paid for by Polk County. Some of the mulch will be taken from the new department of social service building grading site being constructed at the county recreation park. Commissioners will decide how much to spend on the sign and plantings during their next meeting, set for Monday, Sept. 20. The need for upgrades to the fire alarm system was also discussed. Commissioners asked Whitson to get estimates for upgrade costs. They agreed to consider a fire alarm upgrade contract at their next meeting. Commissioners also said furniture is supposed to be moved into the building on Sept. 22.

LHS lunch problems corrected by District One by John Clayton

District One officials say they have corrected an error in policy enforcement that left a handful of Landrum High School students without lunch this past Thursday. “Just like every school district, we have to work with unpaid balances on these things,” said District One Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services and Operations Harrison Goodwin. “We have 10 schools in the district, and nine went off without a hitch. At the 10th school, there was confusion on how to implement our policy and doing so resulted in some kids not getting lunch last Thursday. “The mistake was recognized and corrective action was put into place.” Goodwin said no more than a dozen students were affected. Now, students whose balance owed exceeds the preset limit must work with the cafeteria manager and/or school principal, but will receive a meal. Goodwin said the mistake also resulted in a policy change at the

elementary-school level where students with an outstanding balance were formerly served sandwiches. Those students will now receive a full meal under the same guidelines. According to Goodwin, the school district’s philosophy certainly does not include denying any students their meals. “Why would we deny a child lunch when we are just beating down the doors, encouraging them to eat a free breakfast that we provide under a federal program?” asked Goodwin. “It’s not our philosophy to deny children a meal.” Goodwin also said over the course of the collection process district-wide, quite a few students were identified as candidates for the district’s free-lunch program. He said LHS has more students taking part in that program and the reduced-price lunch program than in previous years. “I think that’s a reflection on the economy,” Goodwin said. “You’re talking about $1.90 a day, but that adds up to $300-$400 a year if you only have one student.”

‘Mitford’ meets Tryon Sept. 23 Ever heard of a small town full of interesting characters whose lives intersect in surprising ways? Ever notice the difference between, say, Applebee’s and Elmo’s? Ever wonder what living in a place where everybody knows your name would be like? Ever thought such a place would make a great setting for a book series or a play? Well, “Welcome to Mitford,” a play by Alabama native Robert Inman adapted from the novels by North Carolinian Jan Karon will make Tryonites feel right at home. Tryon Little Theater has already begun to intersect lives in interesting ways by engaging native daughter Millicent Hun-

nicutt to direct these eccentric folks (including both her parents). She’ll bring insight to this story of mysteries and miracles having appeared as Puny Bradshaw in the play’s world premiere. Performance dates are September 23 through 25 at 8 p.m., September 26 at 3 p.m., and September 30 through October 2 at 8 p.m., October 3 at 3 p.m. All performances will be held at the Tryon Little Theater Workshop. The box office opens September 9. Tickets may be purchased Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the TLT Workshop, located at 516 South Trade Street. For more information, call 828-859-2466. – article submitted

Spartanburg Youth! Theatre announces fall classes The Spartanburg Youth! Theatre will begin the fall semester of its 2010 Theatre Education Program with an array of classes starting the week of September 13. The curriculum includes three separate “levels” of difficulty. ACT 1-level classes are designed for the youngest students and serve as an introduction to theatre. ACT 2-level classes are offered for students from 1st-12th grade. Each class builds on the skills gained from the previous class, and ACT 2 classes teach the basics of theatrical process and production. ACT 3-level classes are for more advanced and experienced students who want to intensify the training they receive. “Acting classes can do wonders for all types of children,” says Coffman. “Whether they are born performers or needing a little confidence, the theatre is a place where everyone can participate and have fun!” Below is a listing of class offerings. All classes meet in the Youth! Theatre room in the Chapman Cultural Center. To sign-up for a class or learn more information, call the Spartanburg Little Theatre office at

Letter to the Editor

Don’t be fooled by Shuler’s slick ads and plastic smile To the Editor: Heath Shuler, our U.S. Congressman, holds himself out as a “Blue Dog” Democrat and a Representative of the people of Western North Carolina. However, when it comes to actually having a dialogue with his constituents, the color of this “dog” turns yellow. A friend of mine, James Davis is the Republican County Chairman in Clay County, which is part of our 11th Congressional District in Western North Carolina. Jim had the opportunity to meet Congressman Shuler at the Industrial Opportunities, Inc. luncheon for military veterans on August 26th and he asked him several questions. Jim asked Mr. Shuler why, in his four years in office, he has never had a face-to-face Town Hall meeting with his constituents. Jim said that the question appeared to upset Shuler and he replied, “I am not going to waste my time having a bunch of people yelling at me at Town Hall meetings!” Jim told him that he appeared more afraid of answering constituent’s questions than he was of defensive linemen. Shuler replied somewhat mockingly, “I am not afraid of you!” and grabbed his shoulder, ”like a schoolyard bully.” Jim asked Shuler why last year he voted against 67 of

the 68 amendments to take out earmarks/pork from legislation and the year before he was one of only four in the House who voted against all 50 anti-pork amendments. He rather heatedly replied that, “You did not understand how the system works. I have to vote for other’s bills so that I can get money for this District.” Jim responded, “That is how we got into this economic mess.” Jim continued on, trying to explain that he had spent his working life analyzing what government policies hurt or helped job growth and prosperity and why taking money out of the pockets of those who earned it to subsidize uncompetitive and unsustainable projects lowers everyone’s standard of living except the direct recipients and then only for a while. Jim told Shuler, “We cannot build up the weak by weakening the strong.” Shuler responded, “I do not want to hear this stuff,” and walked away. As we look at Shuler’s abysmal voting record, he is one of the most anti-job growth liberal congressmen in the House. The Club for Growth rates congressmen on their pro-growth voting record, which includes expanding free trade, legal and regulatory reform, school choice, deregulation, tax cuts, etcetera as their criteria. Last year, Shuler rated a 2% out of 100; in 2008 his score was 22%. Hardly someone we can count on to bring jobs to Western North Carolina – or anywhere else for that matter. Congressman Shuler will

hold himself up to WNC as a Blue Dog conservative in his political ads this fall. He will trumpet to his constituents that he voted against TARP, the Stimulus, and Healthcare bills. However, anyone who follows the voting closely noted that he voted “no” only after the bills had enough votes to pass, just in case Pelosi needed his vote. Many of us called his offices in Asheville and Washington, D.C. to voice our opinions and ask how the Congressman was going to vote on those bills the day before and the day of the votes. His staff would never commit to how Shuler would vote. That shouldn’t be too hard – either the Congressman is for or against the bills. He certainly should know by the day of the vote. These were supposedly huge decisions. Evidently not for Heath Shuler. It appears that he made it up on the floor on the day of each vote. Do not be fooled by Heath Shuler’s slick ads and plastic smile. He is a big government liberal. He clearly does not think that what the voters of WNC have to say matters and his arrogance is characteristic of what is so wrong in Washington, D.C. This November, I urge you to vote for a real representative of WNC – Jeff Miller. He is a lifelong resident of Hendersonville and small businessman. He respectfully listens to what the voters have to say and he knows what it takes to create jobs. – Cheryl Every

Trick play brings fame to PCHS alum Overholt this is the time of year when small schools – say, a presbyterian College in Clinton, s.C., -- put their football teams on buses and send them off to be sacrificial lambs for teams from the sport’s power conferences. the idea is to show up, take your shot, take your loss and collect a paycheck that pays for the school’s golf program for the next decade. But a funny thing happened after presbyterian did those things this past thursday night at Wake Forest: Former polk County High school star quarterback turned presbyterian receiver Derrick overholt became a star with one trick play. “I never thought it would get this much attention,” overholt said soon after video of Blue Hose skullduggery made espN’s top play of the Day and went viral on the Internet. “It’s been an awesome experience – one I’ll never forget.” Overholt is officially now the most famous presbyterian student or alumnus, well, ever. He took a bounce pass – yes,

that may not be much of a a bounce pass – on a lateral surprise to folks around here from quarterback Brandon Miwho remember overholt as ley, faked a charging defender one of the best into believing it pure passers in was an incomDelay polk County plete forward of Game High history. pass and then He left owning completed a 68Sports editor school records yard touchdown John Clayton for most career pass over a touchdown frozen secondary passes (36), most passing yardto Michael ruff. age in a season (2,756) and “We practiced it all week, most touchdown passes in a and it never seemed to work,” season (32) and was named to overholt said. “either the ball the shrine Bowl. would bounce the wrong way after his second completion, or I wouldn’t sell the fake good presbyterian head coach Harold enough. If the Blue Hose try to run the tricky bounce play again this weekend, overholt will end up with a tiger paw imprinted on his chest as he’s buried in the Death Valley sod. He might end up on espN for a much darker reason. But even after a 53-13 drubbing at the hands of the Demon Deacons, overholt said he is looking forward to presbyterian’s second aCC opponent in as many weeks and a saturday afternoon in tiger-town in front of 80,000 orange-clad fans. “they call them money games, I know that,” overholt said. “But when you come to a school like this, it’s your chance to go play in that atmosphere. that’s why you come here.” and that’s why you can’t help but pull for trick plays and jaw-dropping upsets and for overholt and all those early season underdogs like the Blue Hose.

Families across this state need help and more people than ever are relying on their local food banks. “In these challenging economic times the number of hungry North Carolinians continues to grow. Far too many of our neighbors are in need of adequate food,” said Alan Briggs, executive director of the NC Association of Feeding America Food Banks. “The food banks of North Carolina are extremely grateful to Gov. N.C. Gov. Bev Perdue announced recently that Volunteer N.C. and the North Carolina Association of Feeding America Food Banks have partnered together for a statewide food drive Friday, September 10, through Sunday, September 12, for National Day of Service and Remembrance 9/11. “As a way of remembering the sacrifices of September 11, I am proud to say that North Carolina is honoring this day with an initiative to end hunger and give back to our citizens,” said Gov. Perdue. “I encourage all North Carolinians to collect non-perishable foods and volunteer during this weekend of service.” In North Carolina, more than 1.4 million people are served annually by the Feeding America food banks, and of those, some 30 percent are children and 16

TDB establishes call line for questions, comments

The Tryon Daily Bulletin is starting a Speak Up call line and column for those in the community who have quick questions or comments. Unlike the letters to the editor section of the paper, callers for these questions and comments will not be identified, and we ask that callers please do not leave their name or identity. Questions and comments will be gathered and those the editors deem relevant will be shared with readers in a weekly, Speak Up column. If your question or comment concerns a particular town or county government, or any local organization, we will try to contact public officials in charge with these inquiries and will share those answers in the Speak Up column. Due to space limitations, it may not be possible to print all calls, and the editors will reserve the right to edit calls for length, clarity and subject matter.

To reach the Speak Up call line any time, day or night, dial (828) 859-2737 x121. Please limit your call to one minute.
