ance providers, including Ohio Health and Choice and Blue Cross Blue Shield. With numerous career accomplishments, Martin has led the successful financial turnaround to achieve a 3-percent margin, improved cash flow and developed a long-term capital financing plan to align with strategic planning initiatives. She brings skills in strategic financial planning, capital planning, physician alignment, revenue cycle management, profitability analysis, and managed care contracting and forecasting. “Christine has demonstrated success with previous experiences, many of which are the same challenges we face as a small community hospital in today’s economic freefall,” Shull said. “This is perfect timing to bring in a new but seasoned CFO as our board and administrative team are currently working on a strategic plan for services, growth and the financial viability of our hospital.” Martin replaces Bob Cress, who served as CFO for three years and resigned in May to focus on his own business on a full-time basis. During the search, St. Luke’s Hospital was well served by interim CFO Elizabeth Presnell. “We hated to see Elizabeth go (back to her position at Cleveland Regional Medical Center), but we are more than pleased that Christine is here to keep us moving forward to a secure bottom line,” Shull said. Originally from Ohio, Martin relocated to Polk County where she said she enjoys the peace and the pace of rural living. She is an avid outdoors person. When she is not neck deep in spreadsheets, she can be found hiking, kayaking, fishing and bird watching. Recently, Christine became addicted to Zuma and has set a personal

goal to ace all 70 challenges in Zuma’s Revenge by calendar year-end. “I’m excited to settle in this beautiful area, and I look forward to the challenges we’re facing at St. Luke’s Hospital,” Martin said. “There’s a great team in place here and I’m glad to be joining their efforts in securing the future of local, accessible, high quality healthcare.” St. Luke’s Hospital is a not for profit, acute care hospital affiliated with Carolinas HealthCare System of Charlotte, N.C., for specialized management expertise, experience with developing strong communitybased clinical services, and participation in revenue and purchasing contracts. CHS is the largest healthcare system in the Carolinas and the third largest public system in the nation. St. Luke’s Hospital is committed to providing exceptional care, close to home.

Polk unemployment rate down slightly in August Polk County’s unemployment rate fell slightly from July to August, according to figures released by the N.C. Employment Security Commission (ESC) last Friday. The unemployment rate dropped from 7.7 percent in July to 7.6 percent in May, 2.1 percent below the state average, and the number of unemployed Polk County residents fell from 738 to 724. Since the rate reached its high of 10.2 percent in February, unemployment is down 2.6 percent. According to state figures, Polk County had 9,471 people employed in August. A total of $3,424,745 in unemployment benefits has been paid to claimants in Polk County since the beginning of 2010, according to the ESC. Unemployment rates decreased in 82 of North Carolina’s 100 counties in August. From July to August, unemployment rates incresed in 10 of North Carolina’s counties, remained the same in eight and declined in 82 counties, according to the ESC. Rutherford County remained among the counties with the highest unemployment rate, with its unemployment rate unchanged from July at 14.6 percent. A total of 3,920 persons in Rutherford were unemployed as of August, out of a labor force of 26,860. Henderson County unemployment was 7.7 percent in August. There are 3,694 people unemployed in Henderson County, according to state figures. “The persistence of high unemployment rates in certain communities of the states suggests that we need a targeted approach to creating jobs locally in these areas,” said Alexandra Forter Sirota, policy analyst with the N.C. Justice Center’s

Budget & Tax Center. “As the state release last week demonstrated, the continued number of workers leaving the labor force will continue to put pressure on the unemployment rate,” she said. “This suggests that North Carolina could continue to experience increases in the unemployment rate through the rest of 2010 and into 2011.” The South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce, in partnership with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, reported today that South Carolina’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased to 11.0 percent in August from a revised rate of 10.7 percent in July. This is an increase of 0.3 of a percentage point from July’s revised rate, and 1.1 percentage points below the August 2009 rate. Over the month, the number of employed persons decreased 1,716 (-0.1 percent), and the number of unemployed rose by 6,345 (2.76 percent). This resulted in an increase in the labor force (employed + unemployed) of 4,629 to 2,147,429. This is the first rise in the labor force since March of 2010. The rate in Spartanburg County rose by .3 percent, from 11.7 percent to 12 percent. In Greenville County, unemployment rose .5 percent, from 9.4 percent to 9.9 percent.

PAC hike heads to Blue Wall Preserve Fri., October 1 Hiking enthusiasts are invited to join the Pacolet Area Conservancy’s (PAC) land protection specialist Pam Torlina this Friday, October 1, for a six-mile hike at The Nature Conservancy’s Blue Wall Preserve for the second hike of PAC’s Fall Hiking Series. Torlina, a biologist, will lead the hike from the trailhead west of Lake Lanier to Vaughn’s Gap. The six-mile hike is three miles out and three miles back. The hike starts out as a moderate hike. Beginning at 1,100 feet in elevation, the first mile gradually ascends approximately 200 feet in elevation. Then the trail begins to get more strenuous. Over the remaining two miles, hikers will ascend approximately 1,290 feet to Vaughn’s Gap, and then return the same way (only downhill!). The Blue Wall Preserve protects part of the Blue Ridge Escarpment and offers hikers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. The trail is surrounded by old forests and leads hikers by two secluded ponds and a waterfall. There is always the opportunity to spot wildlife at

the preserve, especially migrating songbirds this time of year. If you are interested in attending this hike at the Blue Wall Preserve, contact the PAC office to sign up. You may contact PAC by phone at 828-859-5060 or email Torlina at landprotection@ pacolet.org. Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear; bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water. Hikers will be required to sign a release form, and you must bring any personal medication that you may require. In case of inclement weather, contact the PAC office by 8:15 a.m. on the day of the hike. Hikers will meet at 8:30 a.m. in the Tryon Family Dollar store parking area, near the NC/SC state line, across from the entrance to Lake Lanier. Continue to look for upcoming information on PAC’s fall hiking series on PAC’s website: www.pacolet.org or on PAC’s Facebook page. The next PAC hike will take place October 15 at Chestnut Ridge Heritage Preserve. – article submitted

Lichty donates guitar for raffle N.C. luthier Jay Lichty of Lichty Guitars has provided guitar enthusiasts nationwide and supporters of LEAF an opportunity to win one of his handcrafted guitars, valued at $3,500. Up for raffle is a oneof-a-kind OM-style acoustic guitar, built from African Bubinga and Spruce. All proceeds from ticket sales go to LEAF. LEAF, www.theleaf.org, is a non-profit organization established to build community and enrich lives through the arts – locally and globally – with festivals, events, mentoring, and educational programs. Learn more about this guitar at www. lichtyguitars.com. To purchase tickets visit www.theleaf.org. Ticket sales are limited to 350. The raffle drawing will happen once all tickets are sold or on December 1. Lichty began building ukuleles when his work as a home contractor slowed down. Within a few short months he had built seven or eight and then had the good fortune to build his first guitar in a workshop with world-renowned guitar-

ist and guitar builder Wayne Henderson. Lichty builds approximately 25 handcrafted instruments each year in his Tryon shop. This is the second guitar he has donated to a charitable organization and it is one of the ways Lichty Guitars gives back to the community. – article submitted

when you get there late. You think that you’d be truly happy if you could just get a new job or promotion. You see, you have to use your ability of controlling your own thoughts judiciously, because it cuts both ways. You can use it for your benefit – in choosing your attitude, for example – or to your detriment. The trick is to recognize which is which. Be candid with yourself. Ask yourself, “If I were an objective observer and knew everything I know, would I believe what I’m telling myself?” Then, as you answer, fight the urge to lie to yourself with your reply. Delayed-harvest trout waters open October 1 The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will implement delayed-harvest regulations on 22 trout waters in 15 western North Carolina counties on October 1. Before October 1, hatchery-supported regulations apply to these waters. Under delayed-harvest regulations, no trout can be harvested or possessed from these waters between October 1, 2010, and one half-hour after sunset on June 3, 2011. No natural bait is allowed, and anglers can fish only with single-hook, artificial lures. An artificial lure is defined as a fishing lure that neither contains nor has been treated with any substance that attracts fish by the sense of taste or smell. Continued drought conditions in western North Carolina may result in reducing the number of trout scheduled for stocking in delayed-harvest trout waters in

October. Staff will be assessing all the delayed-harvest waters from now until October 1 to determine if reduced stockings are necessary. “All streams will receive stockings at the beginning of October; however, we may have to reduce the number of fish stocked because of the low water levels due to the drought,” said Kyle Briggs, fisheries program manager with the Commission. “If there are any reductions, those fish will be stocked as soon conditions improve.” Delayed-harvest waters are: Ashe County: Trout Lake; Helton Creek (Virginia state line to New River) Burke County: Jacob Fork (Shinny Creek to lower South Mountains State Park boundary) Caldwell County:

Natural Product Kills Bed Bugs

1 NY, New York- a new, safe and effective all-natural spray 5 product for killing bed bugs p (cimex lectularius) and their larvae is now available for retail use by consumers. Once thought to be a problem of the past, bed bugs are back in near epidemic proportions with a global resurgence. Bed bug infestations have increased 70% over the past decade. Bed bugs are parasitic blood-sucking insects that leave unsuspecting human victims with itchy red bites0tfn3wed that can - pa become infected. although bed bugs prefer humans, pets may be at risk, too. The preferred habitat of bed bugs is places near where people sleep, such as homes, hotels, college dorms, assisted living facilities, and hospitals. They usually hide and nest in any small spaces or crevices close to a host meal supply, such as in mattresses, bedding, sofas, curtains, or carpets. They emerge mainly at night with a peak feeding time in pre-dawn hours. These pests know no socio or economic boundaries; cleanliness does not prevent a bed bug infestation. Bed bugs can easily and quickly spread by attaching themselves to luggage, clothing or furniture and hitchhiking across the country. professional extermination can be costly and may involve pesticides or carcinogens. allnatural Bed-Bug Killer spray inexpensively kills bed bugs on contact without poisons and is safe to use around humans and pets. all non-commercial beds should be treated at least once a year. BED BUG KILLER is now available at MEDICAP PHARMACY, 80 Shuford Rd., Columbus, NC 828-8946112.
