‘Live to Tell’ by Lisa Gardner Editor’s Note: The Polk County Mental Health Advisory Board (MHAB) will be recommending books relating to mental health. Personally reviewed or reprinted from responsible, respected organizations or magazines, these books will deal with the mandated areas of the MHAB’s concern: developmental disabilities, addiction and mental illness. We are often ill informed about the causes, impact, sources of support and help, frustrations and triumphs of families and those directly affected by mental health issues. We all pay the price, however, if not personally, through taxes and community services. Polk Wolverines send Warhorses packing 28-12 by Daniel Hecht

When owen head coach Kenny Ford speculated last tuesday that the 2010 polk County varsity football squad was as good as anybody, and even suggested that the Wolverines were the best team in Western North Carolina, it’s fair to say that more than just a few eyebrows were raised. Most figured that Ford’s praise was just an attempt to lull polk into a sense of complacency, while others scoffed openly at the audacity of the statement, including fans and players from asheville, erwin, and a.C. reynolds high schools. on Friday night, following the Wolverines’ 28-12 home victory over the boys from Black Mountain, many of those eyebrows have dropped a notch or two. even with a few missteps,

including three fumbles and 61 yards in penalties, polk County’s offensive squad put on an impressive display. the Wolverines drew first blood, with senior Cody orick scoring from 9 yards out with just over a minute left in the first quarter. Despite the score, the game started off as a defensive struggle in the first quarter. The first possession for each team ended in punts and the second possession of each team ended in lost fumbles. With 5:20 left in the first quarter, the Cavaliers were driving and a completed pass on the Landrum three-yard-line met a thunderous hit, resulting in a Brandon Cannon fumble recovery. on Landrum’s next possession, the Cardinals were driving before a Cannon fumble at the 22-yard-line of Christ Church. the defensive back and forth quickly ended, (Continued on page 11)

They’re also having a coat drive and would appreciate clean coats, jackets and sweaters dropped off by November 6. Garden notes: It’s time to turn over summer gardens, add compost to the soil, clean bluebird houses; it’s a good time of year to plant shrubs and trees-also a prime opportunity to outline new garden designs while bare bones of an existing garden can be seen. My reading list for cold months is going to get longer: what’s on your list? I’ve been working on John Sanford’s latest thriller plus *Freeplay: Improvisation in Life and Art*, Elizabeth Berg’s We Are All Welcome Here, and National Museum of American Art. My reading glasses collection continues to grow. Personally, I think the print is getting smaller. Especially in phone books! Thank you for reading this column; as ever, the goal is to make you, dear reader, feel like you’re enjoying a front porch visit with me—your comments are always wanted and valued. (With colder weather coming, we may have to move in and find a cozy spot in the house for hot tea instead.)
