PC Players present 'Dearly Beloved'

Here’s a list of upcoming meetings and events for area nonprofit community and governmental organizations:

Frankie Futrell Dubberly has practically worked herself to death to give her daughter a lovely "Gone With the Wind" themed wedding. But, 20 minutes before the ceremony starts, the bride and groom can't be found, Frankie's prodigal sister shows

up looking for husband number six, and Frankie is certain her husband Dub is cheating on her with the woman who crashed the wedding. All this sets the scene in the PC Players production of "Dearly Beloved," which plays at the high

school auditorium Thursday, Nov. 18 and Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. The comedy continues, too. There's a side of beef and two pigs cookin' in a pit out back of (Continued on page 4)

Saluda eyes conditional use zoning districts by Leah Justice

Saluda property owners and those planning to buy land in the Saluda city limits may soon have to get approval from the city for their intended use for the property. The City of Saluda is currently considering adding conditional use districts to its

zoning ordinance. The addition would allow the city to approve what commercial uses are allowed for a particular parcel. Saluda City Council met last week and agreed to ask the planning board to work on the concept. Although it wasn’t specifically mentioned by council last

the church – a UPS man is going to conduct the ceremony and Frankie's other sister Twink has ensured that there will be plenty to eat at the reception. After all, thrifty Twink figures catering the event is just too darn expensive, so she had the wedding guests all bring a covered dish. Just when things can't seem to get any crazier, the groom's nouveau riche mother announces she has paid off her son to leave

not allowed in Saluda Township because of the county's Mountain Ridgeline Protection ordinance. One resident at the meeting last week asked if the conditional use districts have anything to do with the proposed RV park. Mayor Fred Baisden answered that having conditional use zoning would make it possible for the city to allow the RV park while preventing the parcel in the future from becoming a mobile home park. Saluda City Attorney Bailey Nager explained conditional use districts, saying that Saluda's zoning districts each have permitted uses, but in the city’s commercial districts,

From time to time, Nager said, a use will be proposed for a piece of property and the owner will request the city to change the zoning. The city may feel comfortable with what is proposed but concerned about other uses that would be allowed if the property is later sold. The planning board will draft the amendments to the city’s zoning ordinance to allow for conditional use zoning and those changes will come back to city council. A public hearing will be required prior to those changes being adopted. The city has not yet considered the request for voluntary annexation for the proposed RV park property on Holbert’s Cove Road.

A new, safe and effective all-natural spray that is proven to kill bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) and their larvae is now available for retail use by consumers. These parasites know no socio or economic boundaries; cleanliness does not prevent a 1x7 bed bug infestation. Once thought be a problem of the adv.to11/17,24 past, PCCP-0.39968 bed bugs are back in near epidemic proportions with a global resurgence. Bed bug infestations have increased 70% over the past decade. These parasitic blood-sucking insects leave unsuspecting human victims with itchy red bites that can become infected. They usually hide and nest in small spaces or crevices close to a host meal supply, such as mattresses, bedding, sofas, curtains, or carpets. Professional extermination can be costly and may involve poisonous pesticides or carcinogens. Allnatural Bed-Bug Killer spray inexpensively kills bed bugs on contact without poisons and is safe to use around humans and pets. Be safe, prevent and protect your home and luggage today. Call to artists for forum at Mill Spring Ag Center The Polk Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting an Artists and Artisans Forum at the Mill Spring Agricultural Development Center in the 40,000 square foot former school building. The event is a “Call to Artists and Artisans” on Saturday, December 4, from 4 until 6 p.m. Unlike many “calls,” this one is an invitation to active artists and artisans to join in a conversation about their work, their space needs, and how they could see themselves as a part of the growing community of entrepreneurs at the center. In this December 4 meeting, there will be time allotted for artists and artisans to describe their work and the type of space that would suit their work, as well as a brief tour of the spaces that are available. Groups of artists that are already organized or working together are also invited to join in

If you wish to develop a different space in which to create and market your work, be a part of a larger community of entrepreneurs, grow your skills, and continue the legacy of local creative arts, come and take this step with others who will be preparing for a new vision in 2011. tour of “The Mark Twain Show” sponsored by Aoki Landscape and Design and the Kirby Fund at Polk County Community Foundation. Two teams each consisting of three high school actors, supported by a five-person road crew, traveled in Polk County and Spartanburg County as well as to North Greenville University, performing for more than 2,500 students ages eight to 18. This is the second year TFAC has “hit the road” to bring educational theater to the schools. Last year’s “Shakespeare to Go” and this year’s “Mark Twain Show” provided theater education on two levels. The format creates an opportunity for students interested in pursuing theater as a profession to experience being in a touring production. According to director Mari-

We were able to play multiple roles and all three of us got to be the main character of the play. I had so much fun and am planning to audition for the tour play next year!” For younger audiences, seeing their peers performing onstage was inspiring. Inman Intermediate School 6th grader Jada Proctor, after seeing the performance at Chapman High School said, “I personally enjoyed the play. TFAC brought both teams of actors onstage together to perform one show. After a brief conversation to assign parts, the six actors quickly rehearsed the new show and then performed it seamlessly. According to audience member Connie Clark, “Sunday’s performance of ‘The Mark Twain Show’ was a delight! The two casts blended wonderfully in presenting the four Twain stories along with segues true to Twain’s humor. Hats off to six talented kids, a dedicated backstage road crew, and director Marianne Carruth.” At the close of the eight-day, 13-performance tour, stage manager Jody McPherson said, “It was a challenge and a lot of fun. It was great working with these students both on and off stage. What a team!” – article submitted

Saluda Elementary School partnered with Saluda Community Library for a Family Fun Night event to celebrate Literacy Month. Every child in attendance received free binoculars and a magnifying glass from Modern Woodmen of America. Families used these items to help them complete a “Hike and Seek” activity as they walked from the school downtown to the library. At the library, families were met by Joy Sharp, who gave a brief tour of the library and explained how to sign up for library cards. Free pizza, drinks and cookies were provided for participants upstairs at the library and children left the library with free bookmarks and bags for library books. Pictured above are Family Fun participants Aubrey, Monica and Katie Baumberger. (photo submitted)

Sculpture show in Saluda Nov. 18 Jeanette Comer and Claire Carey, clay sculptors, are presenting some of their work at the Wine Cellar of the Saluda Inn on Thursday, November 18 beginning at 7 p.m. Carey has been sculpting since 2006. After moving to Tryon in the fall of 1999, she took up pottery at Tryon Arts and Crafts, an affiliate of the Tryon Fine Arts Center. This year, instead of having an Angel Tree, Columbus Presbyterian Church has a Soldier Tree. It’s the same concept as the Angel Tree but these soldiers all belong to the same section as one of Columbus Presbyterian Youth Group members. This section is stationed in Iraq. This year, organizers have placed these soldiers on the tree, and will send them each a gift box for Christmas. (photo submitted)

In August, Rochelle Tyson spoke to the Tryon Kiwanis Club about Highwood Apartments, located in Columbus. Highwood is a 44-unit affordable housing community designed for senior adults. Each one bedroom apartment has a ground level entrance, emergency alarm systems, and parking. Rents are determined on an individual basis and residents pay approximately 30 percent of their adjusted gross income with an allowance for utilities. There are specialized units for mobility-impaired residents. Call 828-894-3499 for more information. Club president David Little thanked Tyson for her presentation and a children’s book will be donated to a local school in her honor. (photo submitted)

Champion celebrates 86th birthday at Hospice House

Gwen Painter, Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills clinical manager, stopped in to wish Daisy Champion a happy birthday on October 28. Champion, in the birthday hat/crown, celebrated her 86th birthday at the Hospice House on October 28. Scores of relatives and friends — as well as cakes and balloons — made their way into her room that day, which was all she wanted for her birthday, she said. (photo submitted)

Art Walk Spartanburg Nov. 18 It’s time to revisit Art Walk Spartanburg on Thursday, November 18 from 5 to 9 p.m. Visitors can begin at any point on this self-guided stroll, using the map available at each gallery. A new exhibit is featured this month at the Bijou Building, 147 East Main Street. Sara Hamilton’s Converse College Senior Exhibit titled “Pick of the Litter” will open with an artist’s reception from 5 to 9 pm. Hamilton creates assemblages from bits of trash gleaned from the countryside, in an integration of art and environmentalism. Joining Hamilton in this temporary gallery are local artists Walter Bethea and Greg Bradham. Bethea’s work forms complex patterns of color and value and asks the viewer to “solve the mystery.” Bradham’s work pulls imagery from sources as disparate as patterns found in nature to altered states of consciousness. Another new addition to the Art Walk map this month is the grand opening of Christine McMakin’s CME Studios at 174 East Main Street in the old Bishop Furniture Building. McMakin makes functional, food safe wheel thrown pottery for everyday use. Gallery 155, at 155 East Broad Street continues the exhibition, “Eugene Thomason and his paintings of rural Appalachia,” works from a private collection on display from 6 to 9 p.m., only on Art Walk. Spartanburg Art Museum, 200 East St. John Street, is exhibiting creditor's notice Having qualified on the 6th day of October as Executrix of the Estate of robert HugH Pace, deceased, late of Polk County, North Carolina, this is to notify all persons, firms and corporations having claims against the decedent to exhibit the same to the undersigned on or before the 10th day of February, 2011, or this notice will be pleaded in bar of their recovery. The Artists’ Guild Gallery, 200 East St. John Street, features the exhibit “Portraits of the World,” by Dwight Rose. This exhibit of watercolors takes you on an international journey inspired by travels to Kenya, China, the Caribbean, Santorini and Rome. An artist’s reception will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Blues Boulevard Jazz, 99 S. Church Street, is hosting an exhibition of paintings by well-known Spartanburg artist Betty Bramlett. MYST, 154 West Main St., exhibits paintings by Jane Doyle, Carol Beth Icard and Nikki Caulk along with a group of other 2-D artists. Sculpture by award winners Dom Ferullo and Vivianne Carey are on display, along with jewelry by Deborah Farr. Carolina Gallery, 145 West Main Street, is showing a rotating collection of work on three floors. Sylvia Spears, Sam Mitchell, Virginia Pendergrass and Linda Cheek are among the many painters whose work is on display. Hand blown glass, jewelry and sculpture round out the ever changing array of work available. At Hillcrest Specialty Row, 1040 Fernwood-Glendale Road, Suite 34, Wet Paint Syndrome is hosting Kristofer Neely’s open studio – a growing collection of art. The West Main Artists Cooperative at 578 West Main Street welcomes visitors to view work by their 36 studio artists. An opening reception will be held for Teresa Prater’s “Cleaning Out the Studio” from 5 to 9 p.m. Art Walk Spartanburg returns every third Thursday of the month with all venues free and open to the public. The Tall Girl is coming home to Spartanburg. No, Marshall Chapman is not coming home to stay. This local legend, who now hails from Nashville, will play one night only on Friday, November 19, at her family’s namesake institution – the Chapman Cultural Center. She’ll be unplugged, up close and personal with the people and community that provided the foundation for her successful, multi-faceted career. “To perform in a venue that bears the name of my family will be beyond special,” she recently said. “I’m excited to have this opportunity to give back to a city that has given me so much. It’s taken years away from home to realize just how unique Spartanburg is. Especially when it comes to the arts. Where else can you hear, as I did growing up, Jan Peerce of the Metropolitan Opera at Twichell one night and Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs at the National Guard Armory the next?” Chapman, who was born and raised in Spartanburg, is a member of one of the four founding families that helped create the Chapman other ay Cultural Center.
