Polk Schools recognizes 2010 Christmas artists On Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, the Polk County Board of Education recognized its 2010 Christmas artists. The students selected were Savanna Mitchell, Emily Shanahan, Zach Louis, Wesley Bullman and Mitchell Modlin. Chairman Geoff Tennant, on behalf of the board and administration of Polk County Schools, presented each student with a certificate, a small gift and a box of “their” holiday cards. Each year Polk County Schools recognizes five student artists whose artwork is used for the system-wide holiday cards. Tennant also presented a gift certificate to art teachers Susan McRostie and Jeffrey Thomas for their help with the yearly project. One of the selected card designs is shown to the right; see pages 3-5 for the other designs.

This Christmas card created by Mitchell Modlin, a student in Polk County Schools, was one of five selected by Polk County commissioners for use as system-wide holiday cards. See also pages 3-5.

Christmas: Most wonderful time of year by Kimberly Russell

Christmas is generally referred to as “the most wonderful time of the year,” especially to an innocent 5-year-old girl, who just wanted presents. It was the year of 2001 that my great grandmother was diagnosed with cancer. It was a very devastating time for my family. I remember my Christmas list, as if I wrote it yesterday. It had everything a young girl wanted: Barbie dolls, a Barbie bike and new clothes. Like every other kid, I would always try to take a sneak peek at my presents, but my

parents always hid them where I couldn’t reach. That was probably the most horrific thing for me around Christmas. Being as young as I was, I don’t remember much about my great grandmother, but I do know that she was a very sweet lady. My father often talks about how she always had a smile on her face and would do anything to help most people; especially, her husband. Also, at that age, I had no clue what cancer was, but the reactions on my family’s faces

ushered into my grandparents cute white siding house that was adorned with twinkling Christmas lights. Greeted by a warmth that could have rivaled any midAugust heat, I headed towards the table that was covered with a startling amount of food which left me wondering where all the food in my arms was to be placed. However I was soon relieved of my burden, as my mother and aunt went about, in a whirlwind of pots and plates, to righting the table and preparing it for the meal that was about to commence. As I slowly scanned the familiar surroundings my gaze fell upon the sad little Christmas tree that Papa had chosen this year. This particular tree had been picked from our own land. We have a few pines around our house and Papa usually comes over to pick his Christmas tree because he can get it free from us. This tree did not possess a fullness, a beauty that many look for

in a tree. Its limbs were thin and scrawny, the needles short and thin. The tree seemed to droop at the amount of Christmas ornaments that adorned its limbs. The sad plant was wrapped in a multitude of lights and silvery icicles, and the star was not placed at the top of the tree, but was instead in a hole near the top that was due to the sagging limbs. Despite all this, it was the cutest tree I had ever seen. As I approached, my eyes caught on the ornaments that had pictures of our family in them and I could not retain the smile that crept upon my face at the realization at how much we had changed. The pictures of my older cousins as babies and me as the little blonde child with my front teeth missing made me understand that even though the world was in turmoil, in my grandparents’ cozy house, the world seemed complete and happy. As I turned away from the tree to the calls of my name coming from those already seated at the table, my mind whirled with the possibilities of all the new memories and pictures to come.

The Village Blacksmith Under a spreading chestnut tree the village smithy stands; the smith, a mighty man is he, With large and sinewy hands; And the muscles of his brawny arms Are strong as iron bands. His hair is crisp, and black, and long, His face is like the tan; His brow is wet with honest sweat, He earns whate'er he can, And he looks the whole world in the face, For he owes not any man. Week in, week out, from morn till night, You can hear his bellows blow; You can hear him swing his heavy sledge, With measured beat and slow, Like a sexton ringing the village bell, When the evening sun is low. And children coming home from school Look in at the open door; They love to see the flaming forge, And hear the bellows roar, And catch the burning sparks that fly Like chaff from a threshing floor. toiling, – rejoicing, – sorrowing, Onward through life he goes; each morning sees some task begun each evening sees it close; Something attempted, something done, Has earned a night's repose. helped me realize that it was a terrible thing. On Christmas Eve, my parents would normally go out and spend a night away from me and my sister, because it was their annivers a r y. T h e y would either drop us off with one of our grandmothers, or one of them would stay at our house for the night. This year was a rather different story. Christmas Eve wasn’t as joyful and happy as usual. My sister and I didn’t get to open our early gift, and everyone seemed down in the dumps. My great grandmother was becoming very sick. She had been staying at St. Luke’s Hospital in Columbus. I believe my parents went to visit her throughout the night, but I don’t remember too clearly.

They will reopen on Monday and be closed next Friday for New Year’s. Deputies will still be on the road and the communications (911) office will be open 24/7 through the holidays. City of Saluda Saluda offices are closed today and Monday for Christmas and Monday, Jan. 3 for New Year’s. Garbage service will run as usual during the holidays. Town of Tryon Tryon offices will be closed today and Monday for Christmas and next Friday and Mon., Jan. 3 for New Year’s. Garbage services will not be affected for the holidays. Brush and leaf pick-up may be delayed a week. The next day I woke up, excited to open the gifts Santa had brought me. I ran into my parents’ bedroom trying to wake them up, but they didn’t budge. A few hours later, after my sister and I opened our gifts, my parents received a phone call. My great grandmother had died that morning. That was the saddest, most awful Christmas that I have ever had. Since then, “the most wonderful time of the year” hasn’t been as wonderful, and it will never be the same. I still think about her all the time. I miss her and her joyful smile, and I’ll never forget what a great person she was. Nobody can ever take the place she holds in my heart. Christmas is supposed to be the best time of the year where you get together with family and friends, and you talk and laugh and have a good time. For me, that’s usually how it is, but five years ago it was completely different. I woke up on Christmas morning feeling relaxed and happy. I hopped out of bed, brushed my hair, and went to the bathroom to brush my teeth. As I went out of my room, I noticed that something was different. Usually I can hear my brother and sister up running around on Christmas. As I went in the living room that Christmas, I saw my brother, sister, mama, and grandma in the living room, and they weren’t happy. My grandma was crying, and my mother was holding her and crying too. I asked them what happened, but they just kept crying. I didn’t know what had happened, but I knew it wasn’t good. My aunt came out of the bathroom, and I noticed that she had been crying too. I ran to her and asked her what happened, and she told me I should sit down. As I sat down, she said, “ I have some bad news. Your grandpa died because he had a major heart attack, and there was nothing they could do for him.” I sat there looking at her, my eyes wide with despair, I didn’t know what to say. I couldn’t move, and I just went cold all over. I was crying so hard that I fell asleep, and when I woke up, I started to cry all over again. We didn’t open presents or laugh or anything; everybody around me was crying. My grandpa, my grandma and I were really close and we didn’t know what to do now that he was gone. All day I sat on the couch crying. I felt so alone even though the room was overflowing with people trying to comfort

TBOM gets $3K grant from PCCF to offer heat help

Area residents now have another place to go if they need assistance to keep their homes warm. The Polk County Community Foundation (PCCF) recently awarded a grant of $3,000 for heating assistance to Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry. Elizabeth Nager, foundation president, notified Thermal Belt Executive Director Eloise Thwing of the grant and thanked Outreach for taking care of the less fortunate people in Polk County. “With winter temperatures already in the 20s, along with the high cost of fuel, our clients are struggling to stay warm. This grant makes a real difference to the health and well-being of many people in the county,” said Carol Newton, chief operating officer. The PCCF grant was established to support local organizations provide emergency heating services to the citizens of Polk County. Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry (TBOM) provides assistance with electric bills, and

funds for the purchase of oil and kerosene to individuals and families in need. Individuals receiving assistance are on fixed incomes, temporarily or permanently disabled, those experiencing a loss of income, as well as those who are working but can’t earn enough to maintain the household. Grant writer Lora Morgan, who coordinates TBOM’s FeedA-Kid Program, acknowledged the hardship many people are experiencing for the first time. “Outreach has received an increased number of requests for heating assistance, including requests from individuals who never expected to ask someone for help.” Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry assists Polk County residents in crisis situations in an atmosphere of respect and compassion while encouraging independence and enhanced quality of life. Service delivery to families and individuals in September 2010 increased by 15 percent over September one year ago. Office hours are Monday – Friday, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. The Outreach office is located at 134 White Drive in Columbus. Anyone needing assistance is welcome to apply.

Cruising for Christmas by Caley Modlin

In December of 2009, my family went on a cruise to the Caribbean for Christmas. My entire extended family went. There were 18 people total, so it was somewhat hectic getting everything and everyone organized. Nevertheless, we all enjoyed the trip immensely and had a wonderful time. It wasn’t a completely joyful time, however. One year earlier, my grandfather had passed away due to Parkinson’s disease, two days before Christmas and three days before his and my grandmother’s 50th wedding anniversary. The memory of that terrible time strongly lingered in all of our minds. This was the first Christmas since his passing. It was because of this that we were going on a trip. They had wanted to have everyone away from home for Christmas to soften the reawakened pain of losing someone who was so dearly loved. We tried to push past this and enjoy the trip. On the day we left, as we were on our way to the Charlotte airport, it began to snow and the road was covered with ice. My parents were already stressed about driving in those conditions and passing several wrecks on the interstate didn’t help. After an especially slow, nerve-racking drive, we wearily reached our hotel. The next morning, the whole family got together and left on our flight. The flight lasted several hours, though it seemed like an eternity. When we arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico, we were astounded by the oppressive heat. Not only was it remarkably hot, it was very humid and sticky. Having dressed warmly for the North Carolina weather, we were drenched in sweat within minutes of leaving the airport. We spent the night in

a beautiful hotel near the ocean. The next day we toured San Juan a bit and then boarded the cruise ship. We went straight to our rooms, exhausted. Once we got situated, we familiarized ourselves with the ship. That night, the ship set sail for St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, the first stop. In the morning, we got off the ship and walked around the island. We ambled around to many different shops and stores, buying different little knick-knacks and souvenirs at each one. Later we went on a ski lift ride up a mountain and were able to view the entire island. By the time we made it back onto the ship, everyone’s feet were sore, and we were all exhausted. The cruise lasted about a week with a different stop every day. We went on bus tours on several of the islands. My favorite island, though, was Antigua. Through a

cruise ship excursion, we were able to go to a small private island off the coast of the main island. We took a bus to the beach and then rode in a motor boat to the tiny island. When we reached our destination, we were stunned by the gorgeous site that greeted us. Speechless and in awe, we stumbled off the boat. It looked just like a postcard, perfect and untarnished. We went snorkeling in the water and relaxed on the beach. The water was so blue and clear that we could Howard's antiques - Page 12 see the bottom. One of the things that I enjoyed most about the cruise ship was the 24-hour all-you-can-eat pizza buffet. Another thing that I took complete advantage of was the 24-hour soft serve ice cream machines. Everybody enjoyed themselves and had a great time. We all ate a lot of food and bought many souvenirs. All the while, though, the memory of my grandfather’s passing remained with us all. Caley Modlin is a student in Alan Peoples’ freshman language arts class at Polk County High School.

Each family received a blanket donated by Pure Country Weavers. “We are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of generosity that has enabled us to supplement gifts given to families by the sheriff’s office, Cathy’s Kids and foster children served by the Department of Social Services Foster Care program. Contributions to our Christmas Fund, which supplemented the Angel Tree gifts and food items not provided by the Salvation Army, came from the generous donations of community members,” said Carol Newton, the chief operating officer at Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry (TBOM). Thanks to hundreds of “angels” in Polk County, at least 1,000 people will have something better than a bleak Christmas this year. Working under the umbrella of the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry Angel Tree Gift program, a community-wide effort has assured that more than 330 families will have toys for children and food for the holidays. The cooperative effort including volunteers from churches, businesses, civic clubs and government agencies produced thousands of toys, items of clothing and food. Angel tree gifts were also distributed to the elderly. Family packages were assembled by volunteers at the Cooperative Extension Services’ 4-H Center, where the family gifts were distributed on Friday, Dec. 10. It was December 24, 2003, the wind was strong, and the moon shown brightly through the snow coated land I call home. It was the first snow we ever had on Christmas; well at least since I could remember anyway. The smells of cookies baking and pine from the family Christmas tree flooded the whole house and sent the faint smell outside the house. I love Christmas Eve and helping make cookies, placing stockings over the fireplace, and putting the last touches on the Christmas tree. I fell asleep at 11:30 p.m. and woke up at 7 a.m. to find a litter of presents under the Christmas tree. I woke everyone up, and we opened gifts.

I got everything I ever wanted, but that wasn’t good enough. All my toys lasted a year, and then ended up in the basement either broken, forgotten, or I got bored with them. The sad thing is millions of parents pay millions of dollars a year for Christmas, just for it to be forgotten. Kids usually think about themselves and ask for expensive toys. If they don’t get what they want, they throw fits, but they never think about the kids who can’t afford to have Christmas, or the kids that have never heard of Christmas. So please, think about someone else this Christmas, and be thankful for what you have. Tommie Perry is a student in Alan Peoples’ freshman language arts class at Polk County High School.

Not what I was dreaming of by Chris Meeks

It was around Christmas time about six years ago, and it was getting really cold. My family was barely making it through the year, and the winter months made it even harder. At that time, we were using a little kerosene heater that was almost constantly running out of fuel and was barely warm enough to heat a room, let alone a house with five rooms. At times we would have to take turns having the kerosene heater in our rooms. When I didn’t have it in my room, I would have to wear two or three pairs of socks and still be cold. It was getting close to Christmas, and I had a feeling I wouldn’t get much so I didn’t talk about what I wanted. My momma had a talk with me

madar - page 20

that my Christmas would be scarce, and that I may not get what I wanted. By that time, I had figured out that Christmas wasn’t going to be what I was dreaming of. I was beginning to experience what millions of unlucky children all around the world were experiencing every Christmas. My grandma, grandpa, and my momma were determined to make my Christmas better than it seemed like it would have been. There was a program that helped families going through a hard times and helped kids have a better Christmas. On Christmas Day I woke up to great gifts. My all-time favorite holiday Christmas is the best time of the year. The music, the decorations, the gifts, the food, and family are all the reasons why Christmas brings happiness and worship to my family and me. All families have traditions that they share and enjoy every year, but my family’s traditions have to be some of the best, and I’m so blessed to be a part of them. The holidays bring the whole family together and always have. Watching Christmas movies, listening to Christmas music, decorating the tree with all of our Disney character ornaments, holding our breath and ripping open presents, spending time with the family, and watching snow fall is what makes the holiday so important to us. Earlier this year we lost a special person who made Christmastime even better to our family, my Grandpa. He had been very sick, and also had been battling cancer for a while. Unfortunately, he lost his battle and passed away on June

29, 2010. Grandpa and Grandma always gave us the best gifts and the best love any grandchild could ask for. Having the huge family that I have, they always managed to give presents to each one of us no matter what. They always provided a roof over our heads and food in our bellies every Christmas. Although Grandpa and his quirky smile and warming heart is not here with us this year, we still have my Grandma whom we call “our little miracle” after conquering her battle with pneumonia and leukemia. Christmas this year is going to be different without him, but I know he will be with us decorating and opening presents. We are so excited about Christmas and what it always brings us every year. Christmas will always and forever be my all-time favorite holiday. Cassidy Campbell is a student in Alan Peoples’ freshman language arts class at Polk County High School.

Po’Kitties and 20 years of caring at Humane Society It is the time of year again when we recognize the miracles in our lives, even though they happen throughout the year. And this whole year has been full of miracles for the animals at Foothills! Have I mentioned lately that the live release rate for the animals is higher than most shelters in the entire country? I am so proud of our shelter! It is truly one of the best! I usually blather on about Santa, and about whether my naughty deeds will come back to haunt me in the form of coal and switches, but this year will be a little different. This year, I want to share something with you that happened just last week. It's about a mistake that became a miracle. Earlier this year, a beautiful cat was brought in to the shelter with her three little kittens who looked exactly alike -- real triplets! Often kittens will look similar to

until I could find a home. This cat too is very lucky, because if the microchips had NOT been switched, the shelter in Spartanburg would have called a phone number that had been disconnected. And sadly, that shelter only holds most animals for three days before they euthanize them. So this beautiful cat was saved by a mistake, a shelter staff who cared enough to investigate, and a gracious lady with a big heart who made sure the cat had a safe, warm place to stay for the holidays. If that isn't a miracle, I don't know what is. Miracles abound in this amazing community. I have heard of so many this year it just fills my heart. Each time an animal finds a loving home, it is a miracle of love. And isn't that what this season is all about anyway? I wish each of you love, peace, and miracles.

Letter to the Editor

Church is not ‘custodian of God’s Bible’ To the Editor: In response to “Seek truth, do not distort history” (TDB, Dec. 15, 2010, p. 19), Ann Marie Rowe made a surprising statement that the church came before the Bible. The church came before the Bible? Wow! First we need to understand the history we don’t want to distort! From 1513BC down to about 440BC the “Old Testament” part of our present Bible was written and compiled. With His Holy Spirit, God inspired some 32 men to write the 39 books on various media, such as rolls of parchment (Jeremiah 36:3). These men wrote their books by hand, and down through the years, men who held the esteemed occupation of “copyist” (Ezra 7:6; Jeremiah 36:10) diligently

reproduced handwritten copies Apostle John, about the year 98AD. These too were written as needed. Those 39 books comprised by hand. One man's trash is another's treasure Once upon a time, not

so long ago, a local couple

happened upon a skinny little Appaloosa mare in a dirt lot. Her owner no longer wanted to trail ride her; she wasn’t needed any more. Luckily this couple knew a few things about horses and decided to take her home with them and find the little mare a new family. Some extra food, good grass and a few trail rides later this couple put an ad up in the local feed store. At this very same time, a sweet “horse crazy” young girl had convinced her parents to let her take some riding lessons. She caught the bug and now dreamed of having her own horse. After some poking and prodding her parents answered an ad they found at the local feed store: an Appaloosa mare – for sale! The little girl, whose name is Amanda, met the little mare, who’s name is Nia, and as most dreams happen (when they come true) it was destined they be together.

They were compact, having writing on front and back of each page, and were easier to use, turning pages rather than unwinding a scroll. So you see, the first and second century Christians had Bibles and used them in their ministry. Acts 17:2,3 says, “So according to Paul’s custom he went inside to them, and for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and proving by references that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer… etc.” I can see that some people very much want to believe that the church is the custodian of God’s Bible, but that just isn’t so. God is the custodian of His written Word, and He does it His way. — Ken Roberts

In January of 2008, on the Sunday before the Martin Luther King holiday, my wife and I were returning from church. Our intention was to tend to our animals and then leave again to visit an old friend whom we called Aunt Cynthia for her birthday. We were to meet up with another friend who was truly Cynthia’s niece. Upon entering our home we heard a ticking sound and searched all over to locate it. Elaine finally noticed little brownish circles appearing above our fireplace and along our hallway. I went outside to open the door to the attic area and was immediately smothered with black smoke and could see flames taller than myself. We called emergency and frantically tried to get our two dogs and three cats safely in our vehicles. It was bitter cold and all sorts of worrisome scenarios were racing through my head. Literally, within minutes, my driveway were full of fire, E.M.T.’s and rescue units who screamed at us to leave the house as we tearfully were searching for our two older cats, who were hiding. Through it all everyone on the scene acted swiftly, courteously and professionally. The fire was eventually put out and all our animals were safe. We later learned the cause of the fire was faulty wires that ignited our insulation. Besides the attic, a great deal of the walls and ceiling had to be removed.

Letter to the Editor

Thank you, Col. Charles Ross To the Editor: I read with great sadness today the editorial farewell by Colonel Charles “Chuck” Ross titled “An old soldier’s last letter.” Several years ago I had the privilege of meeting Colonel Ross

A photo of one of several fires that Red Cross responded to in 2009. (photo submitted)

Despite the cold and the holiday, many people pulled strings to get the proper people to my home to restore order. In spite of that, it took nearly a week before I could move back in. Amidst all the chaos, what I remember most is Chuck Davis from the Red Cross, pulling me aside and offering a place for us to stay. He also offered meals and a place for the animals. The Red Cross was simply an answer to my prayers. Up till that day I’ll admit I’d never thought much of the Red Cross. I, of course, knew who they were but never realized the capacity and scope of all they do and what it entails to achieve their goals. When I was made whole, the very first check I administered was to the Red Cross. Subsequently Chuck, who has since become a valuable friend and supporter, asked if I would like to become a board member. I have since learned so much more and have had the privilege

to meet all the fabulous staff and volunteers who devote their time and efforts to this cause. At each meeting we discuss disasters that were attended and our contribution. We also discuss training programs and the ever important blood drives. Inevitably we get down to financing and fund raising. Each year at this time, house fires become our number one expense and I now know first hand what the Red Cross means to those who experience such a debilitating event. Each event dips heavily into our operating expenses and we all begin scrambling for new ideas to raise money. How do you keep an organization such as ours afloat when it (thank God) never says NO!? Please support our local Polk County chapter of the Red Cross and help us help your neighbors. Don’t be like me and wait till a tragedy strikes your home. God bless this county. — Leonard Rizzo

at Isothermal Community College, where he was teaching military history. On that occasion we had lunch together, and thereafter exchanged several phone calls and letters on different subjects. Through his service in both military and civilian life, Col. Ross has abundantly demonstrated his love of country and of his fellow man. And though my acquaintance with Chuck has been brief he has

nevertheless been a great source of inspiration to me personally. I know that this letter will be but one of many thanking Colonel Ross for his many contributions, and especially for the thoughtful common sense editorials he has provided over the years. Our nation and our community is all the better for his life. Colonel Chuck Ross, on behalf of all Americans, I thank you! — Jim Cooper

TFAC nears annual fund goal Tryon Fine Arts Center is now in its 42nd year of bringing arts experiences to the community. The Annual Fund Drive, launched several weeks ago by president Loren Smith, is only $11,000 short of reaching the goal of $50,000. Supporting the arts through TFAC’s Annual Fund guarantees that the center will continue to bring visual and performing arts experiences to all ages in the community and beyond. Executive director Beth Child said she is pleased with the success of the drive thus far. “TFAC has continued to thrive because this generous community understands how important their gifts are to the

programming and operations of the center. We’ve just completed a wonderful fall season of free and ticketed events that simply would not have been possible without donations from individuals,” Child said. With help from donors, one of the best small modern dance companies in the world created a magical evening and taught a master class to 14 area students. Donors also helped bring photography, gospel music and Handel’s Messiah to people who had never been to TFAC through the auspices of the Foothills Humane Society, Singing for the Soldiers and area musicians. Because of Annual Fund gifts, one of the world’s greatest brass

bands – “Hot 8” from New Orleans – brought audiences to their feet, not only on the TFAC stage, but at Polk County High School. Drama for young people provided an incredible experience as six young actors toured 13 schools and brought Mark Twain’s life and TFAC’s Annual Fund helps support a variety of words to 2,500 stu- youth programming, such as the summer Afterdents. Charming Stone home

Kathy Romich (center) of Synergy in Action spoke to the Tryon Kiwanis Club in September about the work of her organization, which is providing group homes in Polk and Rutherford counties for developmentally disabled adults. The word “synergy” means an interaction of two or more agents that are greater when combined. By establishing adult family homes where the disabled live together “as a family,” Synergy in Action is providing a great community service, especially for elderly parents who cannot take care of a disabled family member anymore. Kiwanian Ed Komorous (left) and club president David Little (right) thanked Romich for her presentation. A children’s book will be donated to a local school library in her honor. (photo submitted)

Letter to the Editor

How to wrap a kayak To the Editor: For a man who never has a wish list, my husband has a gift for finding himself the perfect present. This holiday season, he had a neon blue, ten foot long kayak delivered. And because he loves me, my kayak – a shorter version of his in reddish-orange – was next to his. In that color, even if I sink my love boat, he can’t lose me. The trouble, other than finding water nearby, was keeping the secret from me. Obviously, I saw both of them when I skirted around the corner of home. My husband was actually disappointed that I’d discovered his surprise, though, for the life of me, I couldn’t imagine how he plotted to hide this from anyone. My first thought, once I spied for the paddles, was, “How in the world do you wrap a kayak?” As visions of Christmas responsibilities danced through my head, I began thinking about the significance of getting a kayak for a present instead of, say, a necklace or a set of pots and pans. Having pushed the boat into my slightly-too-short

vehicle and driven off to fit my smallest child into the car for the school pick-up, I grew a ponderous wonder in the concept of true gift giving. It would seem that a kayak might be an analogy to the entire year we live in preparation for one really big holiday. Though our daily blessings be large enough to cause no surprise, we often neglect to see them and, like stocking stuffers at the last minute, we rush to fill our vacancies with materials that cannot really fill us. The big gift, the kayak of Christmas, is knowing that our daily bread was given in the present of a baby and fills us, daily, with offerings of charity and love. Oh, how do you wrap this into just one day? In measuring the kayak, and trying to determine how much paper it would take to wrap it, I finally realized that having this present in the open was the best way to celebrate it. Much as our salvation was delivered to us by our God, our joy should be in the open where we live it every day of our lives. Christmas is the culmination of day-to-day preparation where we live the gifts given to us, the ones so large we can’t miss them unless we are blind. Salvation, not hidden in purpose, is a present never meant for wrapping

or surprise. It is not confined to a 24-hour time frame. It is designed for all-year use, weather resistant, water-proof sailing on turbulent sea. My kayak is in the open and ready for use. We marvel at its future potential. Our dogs have ridden in it, dry, as a means to cross the living area and resolutely sit there like a scene from Noah and the Ark. They remind us that safe harbor is within a horizon of faith and that getting in the boat is the first step around the living area to the final destination. Wrapping a kayak would be about as possible as a single star acting as GPS for three wise men coming from the east to visit a baby born in a stable, yet, with both in the hands of God, they have direction to a bigger picture. It is my hope that all of us get a really large kayak at some point in our life. One that makes us wonder how to wrap it and brings us to a conclusion that some things are meant to be seen. I hope it’s reddish-orange in case we sink. My gift this year wasn’t a boat, though the one I have will, hopefully, float after launching. Mine was wondering how to wrap a kayak and a thought that traveled to being a vessel that carries my God. — Colleen Carey

Foothills Humane Society seeks temporary foster homes While it is always the hope of Foothills Humane Society officials that the animals of Foothills each have a forever home of their own this holiday season, they realize that many of these animals will be at the shelter during this time. The shelter is now full and and officials said they are desperate

to get some of the animals into temporary foster homes. With the weather being so cold, the shelter is unable to use the lower six kennels, so only the inside kennels are in use. If anyone would like to foster a dog that is special to you, or that you would like to treat

to a special holiday during the next week, contact Dana Mayer at the shelter at 828-243-1852. Some cats might be available for fostering, but because of the difficulties with fostering grown cats, most cats will stay at the shelter. – article submitted

One man's trash is another's treasure Once upon a time, not so long ago, a local couple

happened upon a skinny little Appaloosa mare in a dirt lot.
