The first snowfall of 2011 worked hard over the wee hours of Monday morning to beat out the total accumulation during the Christmas holidays, with many residents seeing 4-5 inches by 8 a.m. In the higher elevations of Saluda, residents saw about 6 inches of snow by mid-morning Jan. 10, causing dicey road conditions, according to (Continued on page 3)

Columbus sidewalk, road work complete Streetlights next phase of project by Leah Justice

After three months, the N.C. Department of Transportation (DOT) has completed road work and the installation of a new sidewalk along Mills Street in Columbus. Striping of Hwy. 108/Mills Street was completed the first

weekend in January and the sidewalk was completed just before Christmas. The new sidewalk was installed on the south side of the street between Blanton and Peak streets just past downtown Columbus. The road work along Hwy. 108 included curbing and guttering along the same section as the sidewalk.

Columbus Town Manager Jonathan Kanipe said the town is pleased with how quickly the work was done. Work began at the end of September and involved lane closings and some traffic delays. With DOT’s work complete, the town is now anticipating working with Duke Energy to (Continued on page 6)

Polk County had 669 power outages as of Monday morning, most of which were in the Green Creek area. Tryon clarifies Woody’s rails to trails vote Abstaining counted with majority vote by Leah Justice

There has been some confusion on whether or not Tryon Councilman Wim Woody voted for or against a resolution in support of a Saluda Grade rails to trails project due to him not casting a vote last month. Tryon Town Council met last week and clarified that a non-vote counts as a “yes” vote. Woody said last week that he abstained from voting, but councilman Austin Chapman pointed out that by him not voting, council’s vote in favor of the resolution was unanimous. Tryon Town Attorney Bailey Nager said by abstaining from a vote the vote counts with the majority, which in the rails to trails vote, was in favor of the resolution. A board member can only abstain from a vote if there is a conflict, which in Woody’s case there was none. Woody made comments in November that he wasn’t in favor of taking up the railroad tracks.

He also said he didn’t think the area could afford to build or maintain a trail. Tryon, along with Polk County, Saluda and Landrum have all given approval for the Saluda Grade rails to trails with a committee being recently formed. Committee members, represented at local government meetings by John Vining and Andy Millard, plan to take resolutions of support to Norfolk Southern within the year asking for use of the railway between Landrum and Saluda as a trail system. The committee has gained support from various area committees and Congressman Heath Shuler. Support from Greenville and Spartanburg County officials is also being sought prior to taking the idea to Norfolk Southern. No trains have traveled the tracks between Landrum and Saluda since 2001. The Saluda Grade is the steepest grade in the United States. Committee members have said however that a trail system for hikers, bikers and possibly equestrian travel could boost the area’s economy.

Nicholas Correll Stott recently obtained his Intermediate Law Enforcement Certificate from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. The Law Enforcement Officers’ Professional Certificate Program was created by the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission to recognize the level of competence of law enforcement officers serving governmental agencies

within North Carolina. The Intermediate Certificate is given based on a combination of formal education, law enforcement training and years of fulltime law enforcement experience. Sgt. Stott is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor of arts. He has accumulated more than 1,500 hours of law enforcement training and has four years of fulltime experience.

James P. Laughter James Pelzy Laughter, 60, of 8985 Holbert Cove Rd., Saluda died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011 in the Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum. Son of the late Henry and Mary Sain Laughter, he was of the Baptist faith and was a Mason as well as a Shriner. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Bishop Laughter; one son, Christopher Laughter of the home; two daughters, Angela Burrell of Green Creek and Pamela Laughter of Sunny View; and one stepson, Jeff Ramsey of Saluda. Also surviving are four brothers: Lonso Laughter of Mill Spring, Oscar Laughter of Aberdeen, N.C., Homer Laughter of Green Creek and Johnny Laughter of Mill Spring; as well as two sisters, Goldie Sezier of Mill Spring and Linda Tucker of Green Creek, along with 12 grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren. The new streetlights will be “traditional” lighting to match the rest of the lighting on Mills Street. Kanipe said he is unsure when Duke Energy will install the new lighting. It could be in a few months or more, depending on Duke’s workload this winter. The town will pay a monthly fee for the new lighting, with Duke Energy owning the lights.

Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is a Jewish celebration that is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration, most notably marked with the lighting of the menorah. The menorah is a candleholder that holds nine candles; the main eight candles and a “helper” candle called a shamash, which is used to light all eight candles. This tradition is derived from a story found in the Talmud about a man named Judas Maccabaeus, or Judah Maccabee. Around 170 B.C., the ruler Epiphanes tried to force the Greek gods upon the Jews. When the Jews would not worship the pagans, Epiphanes raided and destroyed the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. After seven years of ﬁghting, Maccabee regained control, and the Temple was restored. The famous story states that only a small vial of oil was found to light the eternal lamps, yet they were blessed and burned for eight days, giving the Jewish people enough time to acquire more oil for the lamps. The symbolic lighting of the menorah occurs at sundown for the eight days during Hanukkah. Children also trade gifts and play with games and toys, such as a driedel. Special foods, such as fried potato cakes and fried donuts, are served during Hanukkah. Thermal Belt tennis association to meet tonight The Thermal Belt Community Tennis Association (TBCTA) will meet Tuesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. at McFarland’s Funeral Home on Hwy. 108 in Tryon. TBCTA donated lots of time researching and recommending an affordable way to correct the courts, not to mention the manpower to repair the cracks, and donated $2,000 toward purchas-

ing the Flex-Court system. Others who helped with the court resurfacing project were the Friends of Harmon Field and many individuals, with the majority of funds coming from an anonymous donor and the Polk County Community Foundation. Recently TBCTA has approved spending $2,000 to purchase new benches and nets for the Harmon Field courts. In addition, the board has allocated $1,000 to purchase more tennis equipment for youth tennis programs in the schools and elsewhere. Tennis association members are available to help teach tennis and have done so at the Polk County Recreation Dept. for the past two years. They will help any entity with establishing a program for youth to learn and play. Spanish classes offered at Isothermal Isothermal Community College is offering courses in Spanish 1 and Spanish 5 at the Polk Campus starting this month. In Spanish 5 an emphasis will be placed on using the two past tense verb forms and the introduction of speaking in the future tense. Listening, writing, and enlarging vocabulary will also be highlighted. Spanish 5 meets each Thursday for eight weeks from 10 a.m. - noon starting Jan. 13. The eight week Spanish 1 course meets each Friday from 10 a.m. - noon beginning Jan. 14. This is a once a year opportunity to start stimulating the mind by learning Spanish in a continuing education course designed for adult learners who have little or no exposure to a foreign language. St. Luke’s seeks additional art from local artists St. Luke’s Hospital houses many original artwork pieces by local artists. Coordinated by the Tryon Painters and Sculptors (TPS), the revolving exhibit changes approximately every three months. What once was a small exhibit has more than tripled to 95 pieces representing 32 local artists. “We’re extremely pleased to provide a venue for local artists to display their talent, but we’re also hopeful that these original paintings are truly healing arts,” said Ken Shull, St. Luke’s Hospital CEO. “Not only will staff and visitors appreciate creative expressions, I know our patients have and will benefit greatly.” The art exhibit has expanded from only covering the St. Luke’s back hall to now include the inpatient hallway leading to the nurse’s station, as well as the hyperbaric and wound care center lobby. This requires

many additional works of art so TPS has extended an invitation to exhibit to artists in the community. To be included in the exhibit, TPS will need the artwork information (title, artist) by Sunday, Jan. 16, and the artwork will need to be delivered to the classroom at St. Luke’s Hospital on Tuesday, Jan. 18 and Wednesday, Jan. 19. TPS has made a bit of progress formalizing the “rules” for this exhibit: • Open to members and nonmembers of Tryon Painters and Sculptors. • Because the exhibit is in a public space, nudes are not appropriate. • Participants must sign a St Luke’s Hospital liability waiver (in the volunteer workroom). • Contact information for the artist is provided (if desired) with the tag for each piece.
