Foolish, fun-filled festival by Samantha Hurst

Tryon came alive with the excitement of spring during the April Fool’s Festival hosted by the Tryon Downtown Development Association this weekend. Dancers swung their partners around to kick off the event with a street dance Friday night on McCown Street just above the railroad tracks. Dancers showed off their skills in everything from the shag to the electric slide. Then Saturday, April 2 filled the rest of downtown with spring revelers. Event co-chairs Kathleen Carson and Linda Byington said they were thrilled with the beautiful weather and attendance numbers. “I think the festival just keeps building and of course we added more things to do so that people who came to town stayed in town,” Carson said. Some of the crowds of people who lined Trade Street in “This is definitely part of TDDA’s mission.” (Continued on page 5)

Food Lion cashier caught selling tobacco to minor by Samantha Hurst

An Alcohol Law Enforcement agent doing an impromptu check of local tobacco vendors caught a cashier at Food Lion of Columbus selling tobacco to a minor last week. David Hales, the ALE agent in charge for District IX, which includes Polk County, said an approved minor working with ALE entered the store March 30 and asked to buy a pack of cigarettes. Hales said from the report it is unclear whether the clerk misread the date or simply ignored the fact that the individual was underage. He said regardless, it is important for to-

Food Lion spokesman Benny Smith said the company takes these offenses seriously. “It is Food Lion’s policy to never sell tobacco products to any underage person. It is also our policy to ask for identification from anyone attempting to purchase tobacco products that appears to be under 30 years of age,” Smith said. “Cashiers are trained in Food Lion’s ID policy. Should a tobacco product be sold to someone under the legal age limit, the employee is suspended pending an investigation. If the individual is found guilty, employment is terminated immediately.”

Organizers bolstered this year’s festivities with additional elements on Saturday such as vendor booths lining the Depot parking lot. Carson said this provided local nonprofits an opportunity to interact with the community. On hand for the event were Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Hospice of the Carolina Foothills and the Mill Spring Agricultural Center. The ag center also brought along several farmer’s market vendors offering their goods to attendees. Meanwhile, people followed the savory smells of barbecue, woodfired pizza and hot dogs to find ways to ward off hunger. Entertaining the crowd as they perused booths were Ian Harrod, Lori Corda and Vinny Corda, all members of the band Ride With Daddy. “We had a day full of wonderful things – I couldn’t be more

Hanukkah, or Chanukah, is a Jewish celebration that is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration, most notably marked with the lighting of the menorah. The menorah is a candleholder that holds nine candles; the main eight candles and a “helper” candle called a shamash, which is used to light all eight candles. This tradition is derived from a story found in the Talmud about a man named Judas Maccabaeus, or Judah Maccabee. Around 170 B.C., the ruler Epiphanes tried to force the Greek gods upon the Jews. safety

Safety is the act of preventing harm or injury to yourself or others. Following simple safety rules, in all aspects of life, can mean the difference between a great day of fun and a trip to the doctor. There are several types of safety, including vehicular, water, and home safety. When accidents occur, practicing First Aid can help to prevent injuries from becoming worse. Wearing your seatbelt is the most obvious vehicle safety rule. Other rules include: not distracting the driver, never hanging out of or climbing out of the windows, not going near a moving car, never walking on a busy street without a sidewalk, taking five giants steps away from the school bus when getting off it or when waiting to get on it, and staying seated at all times. As a pedestrian, always obey the crosswalk signals or the crossing guard on duty. Playing in water is fun, but it’s one of the most dangerous warm weather activities. There are many ways to stay safe in water: never swim without a parent or lifeguard present; never jump into water that is shallow or unclear; never run around a wet deck of a pool; always wear sun screen; and always use a life jacket. At the beach, follow the swimming recommendations given. bols udoku Home safety is perhaps one of the most overlooked areas of safety. Some simple plete the puzzle below. Polk County Community Foundation awards grant to preserve Pearson’s Falls glen Members can be found doing any task required to support this mission. As part of that mission, the falls property is open to the public. Pearson’s Falls is a major tourist attraction for Polk County. More than 20,000 visitors came to the glen to walk the trail to the 90-foot waterfall in 2010. The numbers continue to increase with each year. After the torrential spring rains of 2009 the club partnered with professionals to address the unrestricted flow of the run-off, which was caused in part by the hillside above the hiking trail and by the role of water and gravity.

A long-term solution was identified, and with the aid of the Polk County Community Foundation gift, this solution was implemented. Further information regarding Pearson’s Falls may be found at www.

pearsonsfalls.org. Tryon Garden Club membership is open to anyone interested in furthering the club’s mission. For details, contact Lee Cudlip at 828-859-0309. – article submitted

Final Pacolet Area Conservancy spring hike April 8 Hikers are invited to join the Pacolet Area Conservancy (PAC) Friday, April 8 for the final hike of PAC’s Spring Hiking Series, a 6.5-mile, strenuous loop trail in the Green River Game Lands to view the “Narrows.” The remote Green River Gorge in the state-owned Green River Game Lands is made up of more than 14,000 acres of rugged landscape with steep ravines, coves, and old-growth and mixed hardwood forest. There is an area along the Green River where the river drops 400 feet in a distance of one and a half miles, running through a six-foot wide crevice known as the “Narrows.” The “Narrows” are some of the most popular whitewater rapids in the eastern United States. The trails the hike will follow wind through the mountainous terrain, often along some of the numerous creeks flowing to the Green River. Hikers are advised that there are at least three places where they will have to cross creeks, balancing on rocks in the creek. With spring afoot in the

Green River Gorge, however, hikers will have the opportunity to see many spring wildflowers and hear newly arriving songbirds. If you are interested in attending the PAC hike to the Green River Game Lands, contact the PAC office to sign up by phone at 828-859-5060 or e-mail landprotection@pacolet.org. Hikers will meet at the Columbus Bi-Lo Friday morning at 8:45 a.m. to carpool and start the journey to the game lands. Hikers should expect to return to the Columbus area around 2 p.m.; however, return time varies due to the number of hikers and the varying pace of the hikers. Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear; bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water. Be sure to bring any personal medication that you may require. In case of inclement weather, contact the PAC office by 8:15 a.m. on the day of the hike to see if the hike will take place. Hikers who participated in

PAC’s previous hike to DuPont State Forest observed numerous waterfalls. To view photos from that hike, visit PAC’s Facebook page - “Pacolet Conservancy.” Feel free to tag PAC in some of your photos from the hike too. The Pacolet Area Conservancy has helped protect more than 8,000 acres in the foothills region. PAC’s mission is to

conserve and protect the area’s natural resources and to envision a community living and growing in harmony with our natural heritage. The Saluda Center recently announced that Mary Brummet and Bill Lovett are the center’s April artists. Mary Brummett, a Saluda resident, is a graduate of Syracuse University where she majored in interior design. She says she has enjoyed mastering the art of oil and acrylic painting with noted instructors in Florida, North Carolina and at Giverny, France. With numerous group and solo exhibitions, her paintings are collected nationally and internationally. Brummett said, “The extraordinary experience of painting in Monet’s garden forever changed my perception of light, color, and form. In my paintings I try to create a joyful, evocative mood that

a sense of light and atmosphere. My paintings are often not a literal rendering of a scene but instead I try to capture my emotional, immediate reactions to what is before me. The painted scene frequently becomes a place to which I have traveled in my mind.” Bill Lovett, a native Georgian and former corporate advertising and marketing director, now finds his voice in painting color and light. He paints in oil, acrylic and watercolors. Having always been intrigued with the power and beauty of color, no matter how dull the day, Lovette said he always sees a bit of color in his world. Trying to pull off American dream Sweat starting to emerge from my wife’s brow as I grimace with every tug. The sound of huffing and puffing is heard under her breath. The numbing gel sits on the table next to my daughter, a pair of tweezers and a towel. My son is in the background practicing his Beethoven (or was it Chopin?) and I am standing by with a hopeful expression on my face, rooting on my wife to get a grip on that tooth. The impossible loose tooth that had evaded us for weeks was ready for freedom. Its grip was strong however and our attempt on forcing its departure had failed again that night. I work on million dollar houses, built for millionaires to give them their typical millionaire status. I see money being spent faster than I can wink an eye at my wife, to build a roof over someone’s head. Less, definitely, could be more as couples build their second or third home, thousands of square feet, to lay their heads for part of the year. I always say I’m one idea away from being a millionaire, but this isn’t what I

had in mind. Is it really needed? I see slave We currently live in a one- labor on these houses, at wages room efficiency apartment above that just get us by from week to a garage. But a good old-fashioned pb&j was as good as a dentist’s pull, and a lot cheaper. The next day unbeknownst to my daughter, it came out, and she never felt a thing, awesome. I realize time and chance happen to all. I accept that idea and the American ideal of pursuing a living and a dream of your choosing. People work hard to get where they are in their lives. We all pull our weight, go to college, do our American duty, but in the end some never succeed enough to build that mansion or buy the chunk of land of their dreams. Then there are others who are minding their own business, eating a pb&j sandwich and strike gold without even trying. Chris Jakubowicz lives in Columbus with his wife and children. His bi-weekly column will focus on how he and his family are trying to get back to their grassroots. Jakubowicz can be reached by e-mail at cjak32@ gmail.com.
