Polk chooses EDC for tourism services by Leah Justice

Polk commissioners voted unanimously on Monday, May 2 to combine the county’s travel and tourism department with its economic development commission (EDC). The county has discussed who would handle its travel and tourism services over the past few

months, most recently narrowing the choices down to combining the services with economic development or giving responsibility for the services to the Carolina Foothills Chamber of Commerce. The county had a few offers to take on the services in exchange for an estimated $64,000 in occupancy tax funding. In addition

Polk County commissioners approved on Monday, May 2 purchasing a new ambulance chassis at a price of $79,820. The purchase was approved unanimously. The county plans to take the box off an existing ambulance to place on the new chassis. The county plans to order a four-wheel-drive 2011 Ford E-450 Cutaway, with a V10 gasoline engine. The chassis will carry a two-year warranty. The new ambulance will replace a 2002 model, referred to

that amount included funding for the director position as well as a part-time employee. The county eliminated the part-time position earlier this year. Polk County Travel and Tourism Director Melinda Young has held her position since 2006. Commissioners decided last month to hire an economic development director on a contract basis. The manager’s recommended total budget for economic development for next year is $92,873. Last year the county decided to eliminate the economic development director position. Economic development services were handled through the county’s volunteer EDC board this year.

as EMS II, that currently has almost 179,000 miles. The county will convert the 2002 model’s box and equipment onto the new chassis. The county runs its emergency department with four ambulances. Polk received bids for a new chassis, with the low bid of $79,820 coming from Northwest Emergency Vehicles of West Jefferson, N.C. The delivery time for the new chassis is 60 to 90 days. Polk County Manager Ryan Whitson presented his fiscal year 2011-2012 budget recommendation on May 2. He said the county budgeted $90,000 for the emergency services ambulance. The county’s new budget year begins July 1. Whitson has said he recommended eliminating the position last year for budgetary reasons. On Monday, he said although he budgeted funding for an economic development position per commissioners’ guidance, he remains “skeptical” of the position and is opposed to funding it as he was last year. Commissioners have scheduled budget workshops next Monday and Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Womack building in Columbus to discuss details on each department’s budget proposals. Commissioners will also hold a budget workshop next Wednesday to hear proposals from each fire department, the Polk County Rescue Squad and Harmon Field Board of Supervisors. Wednesday’s workshop will be held at the Womack building at 6 p.m.

Monthly EBT benefits to be delayed beginning July 1 by Samantha Hurst

A section of the local population receiving funds for food through the Food and Nutrition Services Program (formerly known as Food Stamps) could receive benefits up to nine days later than they currently do beginning July 1. Polk County DSS Director Sue Rhodes worries families might be caught off guard by the new allocation dates. “People will need to plan for this change,” Rhodes said. “Basically what was happening was grocery stores were running short on food in those particular times when the benefits were given out. The industry asked for the change.” Benefits through the program are placed on EBT cards on particular days of the month based on the last number of the receiver’s social security number. In the past, benefits were issued from the third of the month until the 12th. Beginning in July, benefits will be issued from the third of the month until the 21st of the month. Under the current schedule, people whose social security numbers end in 1 receive their benefits on the third of the month. In that same case, those whose social security numbers

end in 0 receive funds on the 12th of the month. Now, people whose social security numbers end with a 1 will see no change in their allocation date, while individuals with zeros will have to wait nine days later for funds to be posted to their EBT cards. (See chart for other date changes.) According to MANNA/Second Harvest Food Bank, one in seven North Carolinians receive assistance through Food and Nutrition Services. Rhodes said locally 1,157 Polk County households participated in the program in March, which means 2,593 individuals were fed. “We’ll have to prepare ourselves in case people do run out of food so we and can connect Flute pianothem with Outreach or other organizaparties, tions music that can for provide additional food for their families to make gallery openings, up the gap,” Rhodes said. weddings and other MANNA/Second Harvest special said grocers do occasions. plan to make additional donations to food banks Barbara to help offset any Tilly hardship the changes create. Green Team chairperson Lorraine Young, collects from each classroom once a week. According to Young, “The whole school really got on board with the program. The students do it all. They collect paper from each classroom, load the roll cart, break down cardboard and put it in the boxes out at the trailer.” Up in the cafeteria, the staff collects, cleans and organizes cans, bottles and boxes for custodian Gary Boheler to transport to the recycling trailer. “We applaud your efforts,”

CindylAnDFill Walker told the cafeteria staff. “ItSeRviCe is one more step, one more thing do in your busy (Phil) to- 859-2054 day, and we thank you for your 8am-6pm willingness to participate. You are creating jobs through your efforts; the ‘stuff’ you collect becomes new products, like recycled paper, 1x1 and insulation.” carpet 2/14 The recycling trailers and the mobile recycling 3/10,13, 16 service truck and trailer were made possible in part through grants from the Polk County Community Foundation and the North Carolina Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance. – article submitted by Cindy Walker

national day of Prayer

TrYOn GOLd & COIn

As mother teresa once said, “Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at his disposition, and listening for his voice in the depths of our hearts.” When we do that amazing things happen. A few years ago, when I was leading a group of pastors on a trip to the holy Land, i had an experience like that in Jerusalem late one winter afternoon. Jerusalem has long been a center of faith and a place of strife. nowhere is that symbolized more clearly than at the Western Wall, a plaza that faces the original wall of the Jewish Temple at the time of Jesus.

Inaugural ‘Friends of the Chef’ social club event Yoga Wednesdays to be held Mother’s Day at Marilyn’s Melrose Inn beginning May 11 Marilyn Doheny, owner of Marilyn’s Melrose Inn, recently established a private social club called Friends of the Chef. Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 8, will be the inaugural event, in which an array of entrees will be served. The Mother ’s Day event menu is a collaboration between chef Amanda Greene and Doheny.

The goal of “Friends of the Chef,” according to Doheny, is to be an outlet and a resource for those who are passionate (or would like to be) about food, its flavors and preparation in a relaxed social setting. The club will host chef competitions, cook off events, parties and more to expose club members to unique and fresh cuisine throughout the

year. The Historic Melrose Inn has been in Tryon for 122 years. The inn is located at 55 Melrose Avenue in Tryon, across from the Fine Arts Center. For membership information, call the inn at 828-8590234 or emailinfo@melroseinn.com – article submitted by Marilyn Doheny
