Wicked Que BBQ champs Bos Vining called to tell us about her sighting of a black bear in her backyard in Tryon. She said the bear broke a bird feeder and tore the screening on her back porch in order to get to bags of bird feed. Bos said she has lived in the home since 1968 and has never seen a bear there before.

An Asheville man is facing a life sentence for selling illegal drugs in Polk County. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested Tommy Lee
Johnson, of 63 Bingham Rd.,
Lot 45, Asheville, N.C., and charged him with five counts of trafficking opium or heroin, trafficking cocaine, selling and delivering cocaine and six counts of maintaining a vehicle to distribute narcotics, according to police reports.

month undercover operation conducted by the sheriff’s office called Operation Pill Sweep. Also arrested in Operation Pill Sweep recently were Alvin Keith McKinney, of 65 Mill Run Rd., Mill Spring, and Marlon Shane Ruff, of 190 Ruff Acres, Mill Spring. The sheriff’s office charged McKinney with felony manufacturing a schedule VI controlled substance and possession of growing paraphernalia, according to police reports. Ruff was charged with selling and delivering marijuana and maintaining a vehicle to deliver marijuana, according to reports. Sheriff Hill said the operation continues and more arrests will be made over the next few weeks.

The operation has involved the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Veteran’s Affairs and the Buncombe County, N.C., and Spartanburg County, S.C. sheriff’s offices. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office estimates it has purchased approximately 2,000 illegal prescription pills during
the undercover operation over the past nine months. A total of more than 20 suspects are expected to be arrested. Hill said charges relating to many other drugs besides illegal prescription medications have been issued, including cocaine, heroin, opium and marijuana. A couple of suspects
have also been charged with child abuse, because of illegal transactions allegedly done in the presence of children, according to Hill. McKinney was released on a written promise, Ruff was given $10,000 bond and Johnson was given a $500,000 bond, according to the sheriff’s office.

Peter Eisenbrown, who orchestrates Summer Tracks, said the beautiful setting and professional sounds make this event special each year. “We’re so lucky to have this park in town,” Eisenbrown said. “We’ve put together six strong shows. The array of musicians lined up for this edition kicks off on June 17 with Mark Bumgarner, warming up for the Swayback Sisters. Bumgarner combines the folk rock timbre of the 60s and 70s with Americana and bluegrass. This year, Bumgarner will perform with his wife, Aimee. The Swayback Sisters normally include “sisters” Lindsay Wojcik, Laura Blackley and Nikki Talley. Talley will be absent from the stage for this show and the group will instead be joined by Craig Larimer of Modo and Oso Rey of Soulgrass Rebellion. Organizers said each member is an accomplished artist on his or her own, so you can be sure the combined forces of this band are set to deliver a stunning musical encounter. On the first of July, Rogers Park will present the Steel Wheels. This four-piece group has often been compared to such bands as the Avett Brothers and
Old Crow Medicine Show. In trying to convey their talent, Eisenbrown said, “They’re so good. They’ve really got it to make it big.” July 15 brings the Nouveaux Honkies. If their name doesn’t grab your attention, their music certainly will, Eisenbrown said. Their coalescence of blues, swing and early country earned the group the honor of best roots music CD by the Palm Beach Post in Florida. On July 29, Summer Tracks features another double show with The Carburetors and Tom Fisch. The Carburetors include Mark Warwick, Billy Munoz and Tryon’s own Jay Goree. These guys performed in Tryon on April Fool’s Day this year, so their music will undoubtedly be a familiar favorite. Tom Fisch is a new addition to the Summer Tracks lineup. Fisch is capable of a diverse range of material, though his influence swings towards the warm style of John Prine or Doc Watson. Gigi Dover and the Big Love take the stage on Aug.12 and they’re an established crowd pleaser at Summer Tracks concerts. Though their music is predominately southern, they weave in reverberations of jazz, rock and R&B to produce a piquant sound that is described as shamelessly funky. Bob Sinclair, who has been heard at the Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival in previous years, will follow them, merging jazz, country/swing, blues and ballads to close out the evening. Last but not least, Summer Tracks will round off this year with The Firecracker Jazz Band, which is often called the “do not miss” band of the area. This eclectic six-piece ensemble will play on Sept. 2. The band has been a popular performer at Roger’s Park before and will likely attract a crowd again. The shows begin at 7 p.m., rain or shine. Though admission is free, donations are greatly appreciated. Soft drinks, water and Giardini’s wood-fired pizza will be available for sale.

Community potluck in Saluda The Saluda Center will hold its monthly community potluck Thursday, June 30 at 6 p.m. The entertainment will be provided by Jay Lichty. Jay Lichty has been a musician all his life. Whether it’s the banjo, guitar, mandolin, the ukulele – as long as it’s got strings, you can find him playing it. He has been a part of the local music scene for many years. In the early days, he was known for his banjo playing in bluegrass
bands. More recently, he could be seen on stage with Cat’s Eye Blue, the Jay Lichty Band and the Lone Derangers. Now, as a solo performer, Lichty brings his own style of music to the spotlight. All of the instruments Lichty plays are all handcrafted by him. All are welcome to bring your favorite dish and enjoy an evening of music. – article submitted by Donna Carson
Farm Service Agency committee nominations for Polk began June 15 Henderson-Polk-Transylvania County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Kelly Springs reminds Polk County farmers and producers that local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committee nominations began Wednesday, June 15. Polk County farmers and producers are urged to participate in county committee elections by nominating candidates by the Aug. 1 deadline. This county committee is vital to the Polk County farm community, providing a voice to landowners, farmers and producers to USDA. To serve on the FSA county committee, a person must participate or cooperate in a program administered by FSA, be eligible to vote in a Polk County committee election and reside in the administrative area in which the person is a candidate. Polk County farmers and producers may nominate themselves or others. Organizations representing minorities and women may also nominate candidates. To become a candidate, an eligible individual must sign the nomination form, FSA-669A. The form and other information about the FSA county committee
elections are available online at www.fsa.usda.gov/elections. Nomination forms for the 2011 election must be postmarked or received in the Henderson-Polk-Transylvania County USDA Service Center by close of business on August 1. Elections take place this fall. The FSA county committees do not approve or deny loans; they make decisions on disaster and conservation programs, emergency programs, commodity price support loan programs and other agricultural issues. Members serve three-year terms. Committees consist of three to 11 members elected by eligible producers. FSA will mail ballots to eligible voters beginning November 4. The voted ballots are due to the HendersonPolk-Transylvania County office by mail or in person by Dec. 5. Newly elected Polk County committee members and alternates take office on January 2, 2012. Polk County Master Gardener students stop at the Quilt Garden at the North Carolina Arboretum near Asheville. The Polk County Master Gardener Class of 2011 has completed its course work and has begun its duty on the local Master Gardener desk. The Master Gardeners are available to answer gardening questions Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - noon at the Polk County Extension Center. Graduates from this year’s class are Jim Attwooll, Bob Brubaker, Charles Cziczo, Rina Cziczo, Charlotte Gardner, Renee Kane, Elizabeth Lamb, Patrick McLendon, Lucy Roberts, Stephanie Schulte, Kacy Spooner and Laura Smith Williams. The Master Gardener class is offered each spring by the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. Students in the program receive 48 hours of training electrolux in all aspects of horticulture. Transition Polk will be shown Thursday, June 30 from 6 - 8 p.m. at the Polk County Public Library. The movie is the recently completed documentary by filmmaker and ECO director David Weintraub titled, “Code Blue: Water in the Mountains.” Following the meeting there will be a discussion amongst the participants to establish means to maintaining water quality and how to help monitor local streams. “Code Blue: Water in the Mountains” is about Transylvania
County and, according to Weintraub, “Although Transylvania County is blessed to have many of its streams on protected land, there are many impacts from urbanization that require watchdogs to provide some level of oversight. ECO is excited about working with county residents to develop a water monitoring program and provide training to interested volunteers.” Organizers say that without pristine waters, the area will suffer not only aesthetically, but economically.
