Polk to buy new Interceptor, Expedition for sheriff’s office by Leah Justice

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office will purchase a new Ford Taurus Interceptor, which is being made to replace the former police cruiser, the Ford Crown Victoria. In addition, the sheriff’s office will buy a Ford Expedition. The Polk County Board of Commissioners agreed on Monday, Sept. 19 to purchase the new vehicles. Polk County Manager Ryan Whitson said the sheriff’s office set aside $54,000 from last

• Early voting (continued from page 1)

must be returned by Nov. 7. South Carolina does not offer early voting, so Landrum voters will not have that option. Registered voters who plan to use absentee voting in South Carolina must mail requests for applications at least five weeks prior to the Nov. 8 election. The

year’s budget by not replacing two positions, and commissioners agreed to reserve it to purchase two vehicles this year. Chief Deputy Kenny Kempster told commissioners that the Expedition will be used to transport firearms and ammunition for training at different locations. The prices approved for the vehicles are $24,405 for the Taurus Interceptor and $26,579 for the Expedition. Whitson said the county will

pay a 2011 price for the Expedition but will receive a 2012 model. The Taurus Interceptor will not likely be delivered until after the first of next year, Whitson said and will be a 2013 model. During the discussion, county commissioner Cindy Walker urged the sheriff’s office to practice conservation measures to increase gas mileage. She handed out documents with tips to save on fuel consumption. All law enforcement agencies

formerly using Crown Victoria as patrol vehicles are faced with replacing fleets with different models. Ford Motor Company discontinued the Crown Victoria in 2008, but continued to produce the vehicle for law enforcement agencies through 2010. Ford has made the Interceptor in a sedan model, for a patrol vehicle, and in a four-wheel-drive sport utility model. Some agencies have replaced Crown Vics with Dodge Chargers.

Spartanburg County Elections Office allows voting beginning 10 days prior to the election for absentee voters as well. All area towns will have a race this year except for Columbus. In Columbus, Mayor Eric McIntyre is running unopposed, as are council members Richard Hall and Ernie Kan. Councilman Michael Gage is not seeking reelection, but Ricky McCallister

filed for his seat. Saluda commissioners John Morgan and Leon Morgan are both seeking re-election and are being challenged by Lynn Cass. In Tryon, Mayor Alan Peoples is running unopposed, but there is a race for two open council seats. Councilman Roy Miller is seeking re-election, challenged by George Baker and Jim Scott. Councilman Austin Chapman is

not seeking re-election this year. In Landrum, incumbents Jon Matheis, Joyce Whiteside and Randy Wohnig are being challenged by Johnny Carruth. Landrum voters will also vote on a referendum this year on whether to allow Sunday alcohol sales in restaurants. The general election will be held at precinct polling places on Nov. 8.

Wolverine tennis downs two more, remains undefeated by Samantha Hurst

Polk tennis coach Joel Picher said his Lady Wolverines took it hard to the net in nail biters against Thomas Jefferson Sept. 20 and Hendersonville Sept. 22. “While [Thomas Jefferson] was tough to beat with players hitting a lot of pace and angle, Hendersonville was tough because they were so very consistent,” Picher said. “They just kept the ball in, and very professionally, too. For example, Natalie’s [Hilbig] 10game pro set of 10-6 lasted two hours because the ball just went back and forth between them. In the end, however, the girls breathed deeply, looked for the opportunities to win shots and just did it.” The No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams made a hard-fought comeback, while No. 3 doubles held strong, which initially won the entire match for Polk. Picher said both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles dug deep and worked together putting strategies to work that ultimately led to their wins.

Landrum football drops first game of season to undefeated Liberty by Joey Millwood

The Cardinals still had a chance. With 1:08 minutes left in the game, the Cardinals (4-1) took over on their own two-yard line. For Brandon Cannon and the Landrum offense things looked bleak, but that would quickly

change. On the first play from scrimmage, Cannon found Peyton McCarter behind the Red Devil secondary for a 42-yard gain. (Continued on page 9)

Polk Wolverines upend Mountain Heritage at Burnsville 26-14 by Daniel Hecht

Polk County took their undefeated conference record on the road last week, making the long trip up to Yancey County to square off against Mountain Heritage High School. The annual matchup between the two powerhouse programs has quickly become a competitive, and often ugly, slugfest, and Friday’s contest was no exception, as the Wolverines escaped from the “The Pit” with a 26-14 victory. “It’s a tough place to play,” remarked Polk County head coach Bruce Ollis following the win. “Mountain Heritage plays very well at home, and we knew that going in.” The Cougars drew first blood quickly, as all-conference standout Austin Rice broke loose for a 32yard touchdown run on Heritage’s first possession. Following the successful two-point conversion, the home team had taken the early eight point lead, issuing notice to the Wolverines that, as usual, there would be no easy victory to be had in Burnsville. Any momentum the Cougars gained from the early score quickly evaporated, as Polk quarterback Alec Philpott hit Cary Littlejohn on the Wolverine’s second play from scrimmage with a 75-yard touchdown pass to even the score. “We caught them in man cover-

Two plays later, with just 29.2 on the clock on a fourth down, Cannon found Jacob Lindsey for a 26-yard completion. Cannon connected again with Lindsey on an 11-yard pass on the next play. After a Cannon spike, the Cardinals lined up with 14.1 seconds left on the clock. Cannon rolled right, pumped and then tossed the ball towards Lindsey on the right side of the end zone. Liberty’s Alexander, who let McCarter get behind him on the first play of the drive, stepped up and intercepted the pass to clinch the game for the

age and ran a wheel route out of the backfield,” said Ollis. “It was a big play because it helped quell the motivation they had gotten by jumping off to an early lead.” Following a successful two point conversion run by Philpott, the teams headed into the locker room at halftime with the score knotted at eight apiece. Following the intermission, the Wolverines came out on fire, scoring three times in seven plays on touchdown runs by Joel Booker, Littlejohn and Philpott, as Polk County posted 18 unanswered points onto the scoreboard. The flurry of scoring activity is rapidly becoming a trademark of Wolverine football this year, and effectively took any remaining wind out of the Cougar’s already sagging sails. Littlejohn finished the evening with two touchdowns, carrying the ball 12 times for 104 yards, and added 83 more yards on two receptions. Philpott went 4 for 10 for 119 yards and two touchdowns, including a 7-yard run late in the third quarter. Joel Booker added a 60 yard touchdown run during the Wolverine’s 18-point third quarter score fest. “The only disconcerting thing about the game was that we had the ball down inside their 20 yard line three or four more times and didn’t

Red Devils. Liberty coach Kyle Stewart was impressed with his future region rival. The Cardinals will move up to 2A next season. “That’s the most physical game we’ve played all year,” Stewart said of the Cardinals. “They were hungry and came to play.” Landrum coach Russell Mahaffey was pleased with what his team left on the field Friday, despite the score. “They didn’t have any quit in them tonight,” Mahaffey said. “We just have to continue on.” Cole McDowell ran for 114 yards and a touchdown. McCarter had 131 receiving yards and a touchdown. Lindsey had 69 receiving yards and a

put it in,” said Ollis, who quickly added, “but that can be rectified.” Ollis was quick to point out that, missed opportunities aside, a win is still a win, regardless of the final score, especially on the road. “I’ll take 26-14 every night they’ll give it to me,” said Ollis.

With the win, the Wolverines improve to 5-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 in conference competition. This Friday, the Wolverines return to the Little Big House to host Mitchell, who are 1-1 in the WHC after dropping a three overtime nail biter to Owen Friday in Swannanoa.

He also ran for 64 yards and a touchdown.

The human tongue is responsible for three major functions: the sense of taste, to aid in speech, and to help digest food. The tongue is comprised mainly of muscle cells, along with glands, fatty tissue, and sensory cells (taste buds). The tongue’s roll in digestion is the delivery of food into the esophagus; when you swallow it helps to push the food down. To aid in speech, the tongue touches different parts of the mouth, such as the teeth, or the roof of the mouth, to create different sounds. The sense of taste allows us to enjoy, or to stay away from, certain foods. The tongue has tiny receptors in it called taste buds. These taste buds allow us to sense the five types of taste: sweet, sour (or acid), bitter, salty, and the recently discovered umami (found mainly in Japanese cuisine). It has long been theorized that certain areas of the tongue are responsible for tasting different things. Scientists have now discovered that this is not entirely true. Certain areas of the tongue are better at sensing different tastes, but all nse the five types of taste. The tip of the tongue is best at tasting sweets. The sides of od at tasting sour things, such as lemons. The base of the tongue is best at tasting bitis best tasted right behind the tip, or just beyond the sweet taste buds. Umami, which no acids, or glutamate, has not been placed on the taste map, since it is newly discovby, taste buds diminish in number; hence, a younger person has a stronger sense of rly person. This is most likely the reason that many adults enjoy things with stronger fee, than children who prefer sweets do.
