Planting Project was first envisioned by the Polk County Appearance Commission last year to improve the aesthetics of the entrances of Polk County. The Mills Street project will include planting more than 40 trees from I-26 to Walker Street, along the town’s I-26 business corridor. The species of trees include 16 maples, eight cherry trees and 18 oaks. The PCCF awarded the town a $10,000 grant for the project, along with funding also being given by the DOT for the purchase of trees. “I am very pleased with the project,” said appearance commission chair Joe Cooper. “The good news is the partnership with the Town of Columbus, the county’s appearance commission, the DOT and the community foundation.” The trees will be planted along rights of way owned by the state in front of businesses and will be

mature trees, Kanipe said. The appearance commission, Saluda and the DOT also recently completed a beautification project in Saluda. The appearance commission presented a certificate this summer to the DOT in appreciation for partnering with Saluda to accomplish that project.
Cooper said next the appearance commission is hoping to improve the entrances to Tryon, including coming from Columbus and at the state line. Cooper said the most important to the commission is the state line entrance, as it is a gateway into North Carolina. No funding has
yet been awarded for the Tryon project. The appearance commission’s Cooper and Mark Byington presented the initial project to county commissioners last year. Byington, who is a landscape architect (Continued on page 4)

Laval, Brown play Celtic music at Lanier Library Violinist Jamie Laval and bass guitarist David Brown recently presented a concert of Celtic music at the Lanier Library in Tryon. After a short introduction by Lynn Montgomery, president, Laval entertained with music, humor and a history of Celtic music from Brittany in France, Scotland and Ireland to Quebec. More than 80 library members and guests attended the noon recital and approximately 100 attended that evening. Laval is considered one of the best in the world and has won the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship. Dressed in a kilt (tartan) belonging to the Campbell clan of Argyle, he and Brown played everything from bagpipe songs to village dance tunes to soulful ballads to a sit-down tap dance.
Laval’s fiddle/violin was made by Kurt Widenhouse, an internationally acclaimed violin maker (luthier), in Belmont, N.C. Many of those who attended closed their eyes, tapped their foot and bobbed their heads to the music. Laval lives in Asheville and confessed this was his first visit to Tryon, but not his last. Library officials said they look forward to his return. Both programs were sponsored by the Kirby Endowment Fund and the Polk County Community Foundation. Bradley Nature Preserve. It will be managed by the county’s parks and recreation department under strict guidelines designed to protect the natural beauty and flora of the area. In addition to Carson, Mills and local officials, participating in the certification ceremonies will be members of the Overmountain
Victory Trail Association, who since 1985 have retraced the steps of the mountain freedom fighters. Dressed in period costume, the reenactors tell thousands of school children about the frontier hardships, ingenuity, dedication and devotion needed for survival in 1780. They will conduct hands-on demonstrations for Polk County students for several hours prior to the 3 p.m. certification ceremonies. To reach the Bradley Nature Preserve and Overmountain National Victory Historic Trail, turn south on Palmer Road from N.C. 108 East near the Rutherford County line. Landrum dominates Whitmire 45-0 in first region game by Joey Millwood
The Landrum football team got off on the right foot in region play on Friday night. The Cardinals dominated Whitmire on both sides of the ball in the 45-0 victory. The defense shone as the Cardinals held the Wolverines to just 87 yards total, including just nine yards passing. Offensively, the Cardinals spread the ball around evenly. Six different players split up 156 rushing yards. Cole McDowell ran for 39 yards and Brandon Cannon ran for 46. Aaron Bryant ran for 31 and Jojo Wilkins ran for 21. Landrum’s first two touchdowns were two strikes through the air for more than 30 yards. Cannon connected with McDowell for a 32-yard touchdown (Continued on page 11)

Wolverines lose by an edge to Mitchell Mountaineers 28-27 by Daniel Hecht
In a virtual repeat of last year’s heartbreaking road trip to Bakersville, the Polk County Wolverines were once again dealt their first conference defeat of the season by the Mitchell Mountaineers, this time at the Little Big House on the campus of Polk County High School Friday night, Sept. 30. As with last season’s contest, the difference in the game turned out to be a blocked extra point, as a fired-up Mitchell squad downed the Wolverines by the narrowest

of margins. The game, expected by most to be a close contest between topnotch mountain powerhouses, was all Polk for the first 18 minutes of the ballgame. The Wolverines jumped out to a 21 point lead on first quarter touchdown runs by Cary Littlejohn and Alec Philpott, with Philpott adding another rushing TD midway through the second quarter. However, with just 90 seconds left in the first half, Mitchell QB Justin Hughes, the leading rusher
in the mountains, broke off a 25yard touchdown run to erase the goose egg from the Mountaineer side of the scoreboard and cut the Wolverine lead at the intermission to 14 points. The Mountaineers continued to chip away at the Wolverine lead in the second half. With just under six minutes left in the third quarter, Mitchell’s Troy Self powered into the end zone from 7 yards out to cut the Polk lead to a single touchdown. Then, less than a minute later, a

Polk Middle boys cross country wins in Asheville meet The Polk County Middle School boys cross country team defeated 14 schools at the Asheville Christian Academy meet held on Wednesday, September 28. Four Polk boys finished in the top 10 of a field of 140 runners. Sean Doyle (12:31) placed second overall in a “photo finish” 2-miler. Jacob Wolfe held a huge surge, clinching fourth place in 12:59. Both Doyle and Wolfe received medals for their top 5 finish. Daniel Painter (13:24) ran a personal record to grab ninth place, and Jake Russell (13:24.1) also ran a personal record,placing tenth for the Wolverines. However, in an almost surreal repeat of last season, Polk’s bid to tack on the extra point failed as Mitchell’s Self broke through the line to block Philpott’s attempt. Following the huge play, the shift in momentum was palpable, and the Mountaineers were able to find the end zone twice in the final five minutes of the game and eke out the one-point victory. “I’ll say this for them – they didn’t panic,” said Polk head coach Bruce Ollis of Mitchell’s efforts. “They got down and kept doing what they do, and did it well. We had some opportunities to make some plays and we didn’t.” Littlejohn wound up with 28 carries for 216 yards on the night, while Philpott passed for 99 yards and carried for another 41. With the loss, Polk County falls to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the WHC, putting the Wolverines in a three-way tie for second place with Mitchell and Owen. Set Sail With Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus, the son of a wool merchant and weaver, was born in Genoa, Italy. At the young age of 14, he set sail for the first time. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain became interested in his very adventuresome voyage ideas. On August 2, 1492, Columbus set sail in search of the East Indies. The voyage was financed by the King and Queen. Columbus and a 90-man crew traveled aboard three ships on the trip to the New World. The ships were named The Nina, The Pinta, and the largest ship which Columbus commanded, The Santa Maria. Columbus never actually arrived on the mainland of the Americas, which he believed to be the Indies, until his third voyage to the new world. On Christmas Day of 1492, the Santa Maria sank off the coast of Hispaniola. On January 16, 1493, Columbus set sail back for Spain aboard the Nina, arriving there on March 4 of the same year. His second voyage departed for the New World in September 1493 with 17 ships. The ships carried people and supplies to begin colonization. Columbus would sail back and forth between the New and Old Worlds two more times before his death in Valladolid, Spain, on May 20, 1506. Columbus Day is celebrated in honor of the voyages that Columbus made. Although he was not the first person to discover the Americas, he is recognized as one of the most-important contributors to colonization. 3

Contemporary portrait exhibit opens at Upstairs Artspace The first contemporary portrait exhibit in the history of the Upstairs Artspace opens Friday, Oct. 7, with a public reception on Saturday, Oct. 8, 5 - 8 p.m. (during the Tryon Gallery Trot). Just before the reception, from 4 - 5 p.m, is the “Walk and Talk” tour of the art conducted by exhibiting artists. and I know it. They are truly amazed that I know how to blow a bubble big enough to pop it over my face, but they also understand that they will be able to blow them that big in due time. That is, if we continue to poison them with sugary gum. We didn’t walk out of the womb. We didn’t start talking the day we were born. No one really knew how to play the game of life the moment they graduated from school. It’s good to constantly remind ourselves that we all start somewhere. All things are possible. Anyone can learn how to do anything they want. From the most challenging of jobs to blowing bubbles with some extremely hard chewing gum, it just takes practice and persistence. Two qualities we constantly try to instill in our kids as they learn new and more challenging things on a daily basis in school. Also, qualities I remind myself to hold onto, because they really never stop being there.

Mounted patrol preview party Oct. 6 The Mounted Patrol Partners (MPP), a group of volunteers who wish to contribute time and energy to support the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Mounted Patrol, will host a preview party Thursday, Oct. 6, at Giardini Trattoria Pavilion, Columbus. Proceeds from the event will go to help pay for the mounted patrol’s equipment. Mounted patrol members provide their own horses, trailers, saddle and some of the uniform. The rest of the required tack will be acquired through fundraising efforts such as this preview party, along with grant applications. A frequently asked question concerning the qualifications for the Polk County Mounted Patrol is, “How much training will my horse require?” The short answer is a lot. Just ask any of the 15 candidates who are training on a regular monthly schedule in preparation for the upcoming 50-hour, week-long training program. The training program will be conducted by the Mounted Police Training Academy, the only accredited mounted police academy in the nation. Only those applicants who success-

For mounted patrol, one of the key factors is “desensitization” to sounds, sights and smells. As with any new project, many hours of planning have gone into the structure of this unit. Polk County Sheriff Donald H. Hill, Lt. Michael Capps, Director Don Lyons and Sue Truitt (training and development) met extensively to develop the format and criteria for this unit, as well as to establish budgets. Lyons and Truitt met with the Henderson County Mounted Patrol for guidance as the Henderson group has been in existence since 1994. Additional research led Lyons and Truitt to a Police Mount police program at Asbury University in Wilmore, Ky. Asbury University had performed at the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Lexington, Ky. This highly accredited program brings mounts to the As-

Truitt, a John Lyons and Richard Shrake certified trainer, said “We were impressed with the training and temperament of these horses. Although they are still young, they exhibit the traits required for mounted patrol.” As part of the demo, Lyons and Tuitt rode the horses over and through various obstacles and watched as fireworks were fired in close proximity to the horses. The preview party on Oct. 6 will offer hors d’oeuvres, beverages, silent auction items and chances to win a trough of wine.
