BBQ festival won’t change dates; set again for June 8-9 The 2012 Blue Ridge BBQ & Music Festival will be held on June 8 and June 9 next year after all, according to festival chairman Chuck Britton. “We had announced earlier that the date would be moved back one week, but scheduling conflicts would not allow it,” Britton said. Members of the festival steering committee have already begun regular planning meetings for the event. “It takes a lot of time just getting the major pieces in place – organizing the competitors and judges, selecting vendors, recruiting volunteers, selecting entertainers and crafters – not to mention actively soliciting sponsors,” committee member Brenda Bradshaw said. “And then too, we’re (Continued on page 4)

Fines begin for contractor on new Polk DSS building by Leah Justice

Polk County’s construction bill for the new department of social services (DSS) building is getting smaller by the day. Able Contractors did not meet the Monday, Nov. 14 contract deadline to gain a certificate of occupancy, so fines of $300 per day began this week. Polk County Manager Ryan Whitson said the county has paid the contractors a portion of the total but will extract money from what the county is holding for the liquidated damages. The $300 per day includes weekends, so the fines could total $2,100 per week, Whitson said. The contractors did obtain a temporary certificate of occupancy in order to move in large furniture. Whitson said desks and other furniture are being moved in this week.

Polk County commissioners recently agreed to extend the closing date for the DSS office in Tryon to Dec. 12 in order to move into the new building, located off Wolverine Trail in Mill Spring. The new building is scheduled to open on Tuesday, Dec. 13. The previous move-in date was scheduled for Monday, Nov. 21, with the DSS office closed for the moving on Nov. 18. Commissioners had originally hoped DSS staff would be in the new building by the end of October. The date was most recently pushed back almost a month because heating and air conditioning controls were not correct and the soffit was not completed. Whitson said he is unsure when the soffit will be completed, which is what is holding up the certificate of occupancy.

City of Landrum to help business owner expand parking by Samantha Hurst

Cities with downtown areas like Landrum constantly battle lack of parking for visitors looking to shop or dine in businesses. Because of this, Landrum City Council members approved business owner Matt Troyer’s request for assistance in creating additional parking behind and to the side of his business, Foothills Amish Furniture. “What we had discussed… was that we’d pay for the materials if you can get the labor to build the wall,” Mayor Robert Briggs said to Troyer during the Nov. 8 council meeting. “Then after that is completed we’d have that area paved and striped for parking.” City Administrator Steve Wolochowicz said the project has since expanded to include paving of a grassy area near Prince Oil

that the public already uses for parking. The two areas combined should create room for 10-12 additional spaces. “Troyer’s going to take care of the construction of the retaining wall himself and the city will pay for the actual paving of the parking spaces,” Wolochowicz said. “This will be paid for using hospitality tax dollars because the spaces will provide additional room for visitors to park.” The total cost will be around $6,000. Some changes to note for those visiting Landrum include that Rose Lane, the alley running behind Foothills Amish Furniture and adjoining businesses, will be changed to allow only oneway traffic. Visitors would turn onto Rose Lane from Shamrock Avenue and exit back onto Rutherford Street beside Dutch Foods.

My one claim to fame in elementary school was the fact that I was a direct descendant of Edward Doty, a signer of the Mayflower Compact. As a fourth grader I got a lot of mileage out of that fact with my teacher, Miss Ida Mae Ripley, who believed that anyone with Mayflower roots was quite close to being divine. It did not take her long to realize, however, that this young scion of Edward’s long-deceased loins was, at ten years old, as much of a rogue as his revered ancestor. You see, Edward was a young man in his late teens when he left Shropshire and ventured to London. A rough, country boy, he soon

found the culture of London to be more challenging and oppressive than he had expected. Apparently he heard of a group of religious dissenters who were planning to set sail for the New World to establish a free colony. Edward somehow managed to stow away on the Mayflower when it departed. He was discovered when the ship was too far at sea to send him back, so Stephen Hopkins had mercy on him and took Edward on as an indentured servant rather than see him tossed overboard. Family stories tell that Edward was an oarsman when the landing party ar(Continued on page 9)

Tuesday School holds Tot Trot 5K fundraiser

Tuesday School, Tryon’s non-profit parent cooperative preschool, held its second annual Tot Trot 5K on Oct. 29 at Red Fox Country Club. Runners received awards crafted by the Tuesday School artists. The 5K was followed by a 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk. This was a favorite part of the day for many of the preschoolers, who crossed the finish line where medals awaited them. The event also included a golf contest and Trunk-or-Treat for the young runners. The families of Tuesday School said they appreciate the support of the sponsors who helped make this fundraiser a success. (photo submitted by Brittany Hampton Tokar)

Make plans to feed your fescue in November Most Polk County homes have lawns that are planted with cool season grasses like tall fescue. The first fall application usually is spread in September. Now it is time to treat your cool season turfgrasses for a third feeding. The final fertilization should be applied in mid-November. According to Dr. Art Bruneau, Extension Turfgrass Specialist for North Carolina State University, the cool season turfgrasses need feeding near Valentine’s Day (February), Labor Day (September) and Veteran’s Day (November). The recommended rate of fertilizer for the November feed-

When you are using a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10, a homeowner would apply 10 pounds for every 1,000 square feet of lawn area. If you used the special slow release “turf-type” fertilizer in September, you may be able to skip this third application. Read and follow the directions on the fertilizer bag. On occasion some “specialty” Nov. 10-12 & 17-19 turf fertilizers that also kill weeds at 8 pm in lawn will recommend an application on wet turf. Nov. 13, 19 & 20 Please remember that most at 3 pm grasses thrive at a soil pH of 6.5. Native soils have a much lower pH. In order to raise the pH, at the Workshop homeowners need to add lime 516 S. Tuesday School’s 4 year-old lead teacher, Beverly Wilson, recently hosted all of the school’s young students at her farm in Columbus. While feeding and petting all the animals, the children learned all about how a farm works and what it takes to raise everything from baby chicks to old mares. The students got up close and personal with everything from cuddly bunnies to quacking ducks to horses many times their size. They learned about what each animal eats, how big they get, and how animals, like chickens and sheep help feed and clothe people. Teachers and parents of Tuesday School, Tryon’s nonprofit parent cooperative preschool, accompanied children on the trip and had just as much fun as the children. electrolux (photo submitted by Amy Wood)
