Morning fire destroys Red Fox clubhouse by Samantha Hurst/Leah Justice

A column of thick black smoke could be seen from downtown Landrum around 8:30 a.m. Monday morning as the clubhouse of Red Fox Country Club became engulfed in flames. “It’s just a mess,” said owner Gene Holbrooks as he watched the fire consume the building from a golf cart in the parking lot. “It just looked like a small fire when we got here but now

everything is gone. There were just so many memories inside that building,” Ann Holbrooks said. Eric Jackson, who has worked for the club for 11 years and whose father helped build the club, called for the fire department to come out around 10 minutes after 8 a.m. “I just opened the door and smoke came pouring out – it was just engulfed inside,” Jackson said.

Serving Polk County and Upper Spartanburg and Greenville Counties

Fire departments responded from all over Polk County and the area, including Columbus, Tryon, Green Creek and Mill Spring, along with the Campobello, Landrum and New Prospect fire departments. The fire spread quickly while tanker trucks came and went to fill up at the fire hydrant at the intersection of I-26 and Landrum (Continued on page 3)

Road and firefighters filled swimming pools to keep water flowing on the high-reaching flames. The roof caved in within the first hour of the fire. Longtime fire fighter Geoff Tennant was one of the first on the scene. “You couldn’t see any flames when I pulled up, just heavy, heavy smoke,” Tennant said. “For whatever reason the fire had started the process of running the entire length of the ceiling; there was no saving the building.” Firefighters did manage to keep the nearby pro shop from catching fire. There were few items saved from the building. A fox with a golf ball in its mouth and a few wall decorations were pulled from the fire initially. “I’m just glad the restaurant was closed so there was no one inside,” Jackson said. “Now we’ve got to (Continued on page 4)

“It’s just hard to believe,” Williams said. “We had just worked yesterday and had a big Thanksgiving lunch planned on Thursday for members. It just breaks my heart because these people – the members – they become like your family.” The Polk County Rescue Squad, Polk County Emergency Services, Polk County Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with the fire.

Columbus approves two-hour parking downtown New downtown rules apply from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. by Leah Justice

The Town of Columbus has reinstated its two-hour parking rule on the block between Peak and Blanton Streets and extended it to both sides of Mills Street. Columbus Town Council met Thursday, Nov. 17 and approved the new provisions. The hours of the parking restriction will be between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. to allow residents who live downtown to park in the evenings. Columbus Town Manager Jonathan Kanipe said the new parking signs should be ordered by this week and he hopes to have the signs by Dec. 1. The Town of Columbus has been faced with downtown parking issues for years, with businesses saying their customers have problems finding convenient spaces during peak hours. The town has

asked businesses to park vehicles in other areas, such as in front of Stearns, to help alleviate the problems. Council last month met with Calvert’s owner Randall Calvert, who said the parking problems still exist. The town sent parking regulations to its planning board and had a meeting of downtown businesses, all of whom seemed to agree the short-term solution is parking restrictions. Columbus already had an ordinance for two-hour parking on the south side of Mills Street between Peak and Blanton Streets. When sidewalks were installed a few years ago, the parking signs were taken down and never replaced. Council approved reinstating the ordinance with the time limitation of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the south side between Peak and Blanton Streets and adding the same restriction on the north side, between Peak Street and where the parking spaces end.

Tryon votes down Leonard property for Harmon Field by Leah Justice

Tryon Town Council voted against purchasing what is known as the Leonard property to expand Harmon Field. Council met Tuesday, Nov. 15 and voted 3-1 not to spend any money on permits or inspections and not to pursue the idea of purchasing the property. The motion was approved 3 to 1, with councilman Wim Woody voting against the motion. The Harmon Field Board of Supervisors had recommended to town council in October that the town research selling the community center building at Harmon Field in order to purchase the Leonard property, which includes two acres and a house adjacent to the equestrian side of the park.

Harmon Field Parks and Recreation Supervisor George Alley agreed in October to study the possibility with councilman Austin Chapman. The town would have had to gain permission from the N.C. Parks and Recreation Trust Fund Grant (PARTF) in order to sell the community building to purchase the Leonard property. The community center building was acquired through a PARTF grant through the state. The state frowns on selling property obtained through its grant funding and has specific requirements in order to convert the funding. The community center building is facing needed repairs, including a new roof and central heating and air conditioning. Utility costs of the building also are expensive.

‘Santa baby, hurry down the chimney for me’ Hollie Swofford (left) and Pam McNeil cozy up to ‘Santa Baby,’ also known as Ben Davis, hoping he’ll leave them extravagant presents under the tree. Swofford (soprano), McNeil (piano) and Davis (tenor) are members of the Holiday Players, who are preparing for the group’s musical holiday performance, called “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” The group, which has its roots in the Home for the Holidays ensemble that performed at FENCE for many years, also includes Tena Greene (soprano), Connie Fry-Cedervall (alto), Cynthia Terwilliger (alto), Richard Kennedy (tenor), Mike Greata (bass), Manfred Walter (bass), Barbara Tilly (flute), Donis Schweizer (violin), Bill Hague (percussion) and Linda Lee Reynolds (string bass). “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” will be presented at the Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Tryon on Dec. 17 at 3 p.m. and again at 7 p.m. Proceeds will benefit Thermal Belt Habitat for Humanity. UDO committee receives improved draft of unified ordinance At the last meeting of the Unified Development Advisory Committee on Nov. 9, 2011, Holland Consulting Planners presented the committee with an improved draft of the unified ordinance after revisions were made in response to comments from the committee, staff, county attorney and other individuals. The UDO has been structured into chapters, some of which apply only to the zoned areas of the county. Each chapter in the updated UDO states in which townships the regulations apply. There has been no increase in the area of zoning within Polk County. Chapters one and two are the general provisions and administration procedures of the document, which apply to

all the Polk County townships. Chapter three includes the subdivision regulations. Polk County currently has a subdivision ordinance that applies to every township within the county and this does not change. Chapter four is the zoning ordinance. This chapter contains articles related to zoning and applies only to the currently zoned areas of Polk County located in the Columbus, Saluda, Tryon and Green Creek townships. Chapter five includes the performance standards. This chapter contains existing Polk County stand-alone ordinances including sign regulations, sexually oriented business ordinance, manufactured home ordinance, manufactured home

park ordinance, salvage yard ordinance and telecommunication facilities ordinance. All these ordinances already apply to all Polk County townships. Chapter six contains environmental regulations. Some of these regulations are mandated by the State of North Carolina, such as the flood damage prevention ordinance and the watershed ordinance, and are currently enacted in all townships within Polk County. The mountainside and ridgeline protection ordinances are two current Polk County ordinances, one for the zoned areas and one for the unzoned areas in Polk County. The Land Preservation Overlay District is an addition that will apply only to the zoned areas located in the Columbus, Saluda, Tryon and Green Creek

townships. The UDO advisory committee received the first complete draft of the ordinance on Nov. 18, 2010. Since that date, the committee has been conducting public meetings to discuss the draft. The next meetings will be Thursday, Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Polk County Senior Center, and Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Polk County Library in Columbus. The UDO committee welcomes public comment at every meeting and encourages anyone interested to attend. For more information or to review the revised draft of the complete unified ordinance, go to the Polk County website, www.polknc.org. – article submitted by the Polk County UDO Advisory Committee

Polk boys basketball looks to improve on last season by Samantha Hurst

Play hard, play smart and play together - “The Polk Way” pervades the locker room as basketball season gears up at Polk County High School. Varsity boys basketball coach Josh McEntire has five seniors, three juniors and four sophomores making up his squad this season. In that mix are six returning varsity players, five of whom grabbed a lot of time on court last season. “I expect significant improvements this season because we had a great summer working together and continue to improve in all areas as a team,” McEntire said. The Wolverines take it back to the net after an 11-14 overall season and 8-6 in conference play last year. “The players are starting to understand how hard they need to work to have a successful basketball program,” McEntire said. “Our strengths this year will be experience in the front court. One of our biggest weakness this year will be in the backcourt. Because of injuries we will be very young at shooting guard and

point guard.” McEntire looks to Deion Twitty, Sam Vining, Joel Booker and Alec Philpott to lead the

team. “They worked really hard the last few years to become better basketball players,” he said.

Now they will just need to step up, especially against evertough conference opponents Hendersonville and Mitchell.

FHS dedicates new pavilion at shelter

Saxophonist Katherine Barker of Green Creek has been accepted into the American High School Honors Performance Program and will perform at Carnegie Hall in New York City in February 2012. (photo submitted by Lee Barker)

On Sunday, Nov. 6, Foothills Humane Society (FHS) dedicated the new pavilion, located at the organization’s animal shelter on Little Mountain Road. The primary sponsors responsible for the building of the open air area were mentioned at the dedication. Joanie Lonnes, a member of the unrestricted grants committee of Polk County Community Foundation, was on hand to represent the foundation for the dedication of the pavilion. Also mentioned for their support of the pavilion were the Carol M. Wellman Trust and Stuart

Evans, who gave planters in memory of her dog. Joan Roseberry and John Punam of Dogwood Designs donated new highway signs. Special mention was made of the paver terrace where 50 early birds have bought engraved bricks set in an apron at the entrance to the pavilion to honor friends and pets. Polly Kennedy and members of the Polk County High School Humane Club assisted at the event and also donated $308 they had collected for the shelter. - article submitted by Joyce Cox

Pearson’s Falls receives funding from PCCF Kirby Fund The Tryon Garden Club, owner and operator of Pearson’s Falls, has received funding from the Polk County Community Foundation (PCCF) through the Kirby Endowment Fund grants. This funding has allowed the club to administer one phase of the ongoing treatment to the hemlocks at Pearson’s Falls in order to help to preserve them from the effects of the wooly adelgid. Without treatment, there is the risk of total loss of these trees in the glen. Several other trees had to be removed and PCCF funds were provided to assist in removing these trees with little or no damage to the surrounding vegetation in the glen.

The glen has recently been referred to as a treasure. Located on Pearson’s Falls Road off Hwy. 176 in Polk County, the glen is open to visitors seven days a week. According to the Tryon Garden Club, increased interest in the glen is being documented each month. Tryon Garden Club is a nonprofit organization with membership open to the public. For membership information please contact Delia Tittle at 828-8598372. For information on Pearson’s Falls visit www.pearsonsfalls.org. - article submitted by Jane Templeton for Tryon Garden Club

‘I’ll drink to that’: Can drinking alcohol benefit the elderly? The Holiday season is upon us, and with that, the concerns about over-imbibing alcohol during this time of year. To be sure, there’s little doubt that the research has shown that too much consumption of alcohol, just like consuming too much of anything from turkey and sweet potato pie to cookies and chocolate, isn’t good for anyone. But what about the impact on the health of seniors who drink? As we age, our metabolism slows down. This simply means that we don’t process anything we ingest as quickly as we did when we were younger. Medicines stay in our systems longer and so, too, does alcohol. Elderly people may be more sensitive to the effects of alcohol, especially if they use certain drugs that are contraindicated, have lower muscle mass or tend to eat a poor diet. Now I’m not speaking of abusive levels of alcohol consumption, but sensible limits of daily intake of alcohol. Typically, sensible intake

‘Presents of Art’ opens at Upstairs Artspace Nov. 26 828-894-0693 828-894-0693 The Upstairs Artspace lights up the holidays with “Presents of Art,” a major craft show opening Saturday, Nov. 26 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The annual event offers crafts for every taste and pocketbook. About 60 regional artists participate with jewelry, scarves, handbags, bird houses, Christmas ornaments, soaps, woodturned objects, decorative dolls, ceramic and glass art, fiber art, children’s toys, pet presents and candles. “Our goal is to provide fresh, exciting, well-made crafts for the holiday shopper,” said Wyndy Morehead, event chair. Normally a showcase for contemporary art, the Upstairs becomes a large upscale shop between Thanksgiving and Christmas. “Presents of Art” is an important fundraiser for the 34-year-old nonprofit organization.
