Toy Run raises $7,225, surpasses 2010 Event draws 425 motorcycles by Leah Justice

“Saluda’s Past” pageant will be performed by third through fifth graders at Saluda Elementary Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. in the school auditorium. Jeannie Solomon, a teacher’s assistant at Saluda Elementary, wrote and directed the play in commemoration of the town’s 130th birthday.

Polk County was ATM (all things motorcycle) Saturday, Nov. 26 as riders paraded all over

the county in the annual Toy Run to raise toys and money for area needy children. This year’s Polk County Toy Run raised $7,225, included 425 motorcycles with 600 riders and collected 17 bags of toys.

“This was the best year since we had a Harley Davidson raffle a few years ago,” Toy Run director Barry Gee said. “This year was excellent.” (Continued on page 4)

Tryon Elementary fifth graders visit TFAC exhibit Tryon Elementary School fifth-grade students walked to the Tryon Fine Arts Center to see the exhibit called “The Awakening of the Turtle: Portraits of Native Americans” by Tracie Schmidt. The fifth grade has been studying the many Native American tribes and learning about their history, lifestyles and impact on American culture. Tracie Schmidt talked to the students about her experiences and was able to give a first-hand account of Native American culture to the students. The students also learned about Native American flutes from Bob Child of Ugly Boy Flutes. Child gave a presentation and demonstration of his different flutes and their different musical sounds. – article submitted by Denise Corcoran

T-shirt design was created by Elizabeth Shanahan, a student at Polk County High School. The parade of motorcycles began at the Saluda Fire Department and ended at the Polk County Courthouse, traveling throughout the county on the way. Some motorcycles had toys strapped on the back, and one motorcycle pulled a cage

carrying a live pig. The toys are distributed throughout the community to children in need. The money raised is split between the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry, the Polk County Department of Social Services, Steps To HOPE and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office’s programs for the needy. Checks will be distributed this week to the organizations. The sheriff’s office sponsors the event annually.

Columbus built its fund balance to $523,252 in available funds, or fund balance that is not reserved. The town’s total fund balance is $577,933 after it added $89,736 last year to the total. The previous year, fiscal year 2009-2010, Columbus had an unassigned fund balance of 52.4 percent of its general fund. tures in both the general fund and the water/sewer fund. In fiscal year 2010-2011, which ended June 30, 2011, the town’s general fund ended with revenues exceeding expenditures by $70,656, according to the audit report. Although the town’s revenues were less than budgeted by $72,899, actual expenses were less than budget by $143,555 for a year-end positive. Major reasons for ending the year with revenues over expenditures were a reduction in staff in the planning department, the closing of the town’s recycling center and decreases in expenses for the annual Fourth of July celebration. The proprietary fund, or wa-

ter and sewer fund, also ended the year with revenues exceeding expenses. The water and sewer fund ended the year with $1,070,506 in revenues and spent $936,152, for an operating income of $134,354, according to the audit. Other financial highlights of the year include a net increase of $19,822 in the town’s total debt for the general fund, and a decrease of $169,038 in the total debt in the water and sewer fund. Financial activities for last year included the purchase of land adjacent to Veteran’s Park for $96,979. Funding for the acquisition came from grants from the Polk County Community Foundation and the North

Carolina Parks and Recreation Trust Fund, as well as donations. The town also sold four police vehicles for a $19,080 gain. In the water and sewer fund, the town implemented a 5 percent increase in both water and sewer rates during fiscal year 2010-2011, which increased service charges by $35,000. The town also received a couple grants during the year for water/ sewer activities, including a $50,000 grant from the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund to evaluate storm water quality and a $499,900 grant from the N.C. Rural Center for design and planning of the joint water line between Columbus, Saluda and Tryon.

LHS wrestling hoping to hang another banner by Joey Millwood

The door opened to a room in the back of Landrum High School. Some wrestlers emerged and along with them steam from the heated room in which they practice. Landrum wrestling coach Josh Fowler followed them, dripping wet with sweat, patted them on the back and told them to get ready for the season. Fowler and the Cardinals are in a position to repeat this season as region champions. To do that they will rely on a talented base of returning wrestlers in Danny Seay, Drew Burns, Josh Jones, Ryan Herbst, Edward Molina and Jeremy Graham. There will also be some strong newcomers in Alex Samenko, Heath Jordan, Hunter Rossi, Chris Padilla and Jonah Terry. Even with that corps returning for the Cardinals, youth will be an issue for Landrum as a whole. “This year’s team will be a fairly young team after graduating an experienced core group of starters,” Fowler said. “The key to success this year will be gaining experience on the mat and working every day to improve.” Last season was a special season for the Cardinals. It was the first season that they were able to win a region championship officially because of the number of teams in the region. Fowler and company would like to hang another banner this season.

Polk County native Yates Jackson turned 100 years old on Nov. 26, 2011. Jackson was recently treated to a party at the Landrum First Baptist Church, where he has been a member for 68 years. Jackson was born in Mill Spring to his mother and father, Dora Gibbs and F. C. Jackson. He lived in the Lake Adger area before there was a lake. Jackson’s family is known for longevity, as his cousin Grace Wilson was the oldest person to have ever lived in Polk County when she died at age 107. Jackson is also the cousin of Frank Jackson, who had a well-known cattle farm in Mill Spring. In Jackson’s adult years he lived in the Morgan Chapel area. Jackson’s work career included Adams Millis in Tryon. He also worked at Fair Forest and his last job was at the Bigelow plant in Landrum. Born in 1911, Jackson’s life has spanned many wars. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was honorably discharged on April 21, 1946 as a sergeant with the 280th Field Artillery Battalion. Jackson was then given a letter of commendation by General Omar N. Bradley. Jackson appeared to be in good health during his birthday party, his friends said. He did not look his age, except for a hurt foot that had him in a wheelchair, said friends who attended. As the party was over, Jackson told his niece, Jane Clayton, he wanted to go to a fish camp to eat some catfish stew. Jackson’s friends and family wished him a happy 100 birthday. - article submitted by Ted Owens
