Tractor-trailer hits police car, passenger van by Leah Justice

A tractor-trailer ran into a Columbus police car and a passenger van early Monday, Dec. 5 along I-26. Around 2:42 a.m., the Columbus police and fire departments

were called to assist with a tractor-trailer that, while heading west along I-26 at the bottom portion of the Saluda grade area, had a problem shifting gears, traveled backwards and jackknifed, blocking the two lanes of traffic. No

collisions occurred at this point. A wrecker pulled the tractortrailer back in line and around 4:45 a.m. the truck attempted to travel back up the grade, go(Continued on page 4)

Polk UDO committee cancels Dec. 13 meeting by Barbara Tilly

The Polk County Unified Development Ordinance Committee meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. has been canceled. The UDO committee met Thursday, Dec. 1 and discussed possible revisions to its mountain and ridgeline protection ordinance (MRPO). One of the issues was how to handle Saluda Township, whose elevation is high enough that commercial development is prohibited according to the current ordinance. Currently,

the MRPO restricts commercial development on elevations 1,650 feet and above and places further restrictions at 2,250 ft. and above. The meeting Dec. 13 was expected to consider options for the Saluda area and whether to change minimum lot sizes in the MRPO to match the new subdivision ordinance. The UDO committee is made up of community members and is drafting changes to county ordinances in an effort to combine all ordinances into one, unified development ordinance.

I have been in a funk, but I usually get that way during Advent. I seem to be too old, jaded and theologically overeducated to really enjoy the cultural build-up during Advent to Christmas any longer. My son, Isaac, has grown up, married, lives in another state and has produced no grandchildren (a shortcoming of which he is reminded with some regularity), so even the vicarious thrill of a grandchild’s anticipation of the season is absent. (Hear a big, self-indulgent sigh at this point.) And since I am whining and have your full attention, may I add there is not a lot to be said for having yet another layer of church responsibilities added to one’s

plate (hence my impressivesounding but rather meaningless new ecclesiastical title) while pushing into my 61st decade with the mandate from my cardiologist to change my diet, exercise daily, lose weight and adjust to a fistful of new meds. My piteous curmudgeonliness has no bounds, it seems. So here I am, basking in my misery, when God decides enough is enough. He calls my hand as only the Lord can, jerks me out of my self and shows me once again that “it ain’t about me.” My cosmic wedgie came in the form of one of our Holy Cross Outreach forays to the Church of the Advocate in Asheville. On a pleasant day in spring the experience will tug at one’s heart strings, but when the weather turns high country cold in December it can tear one’s world view apart. On Sunday, Dec. 4, I accompanied our crew to Advocate with a special mission in mind. As I went from one person to another, whipping out a fiver with a “Merry Christmas,” I was compelled to really see those to whom I offered such a small gift, and to receive from some of them in return a genuine and heartfelt gratitude totally out of proportion to the gift. River Valley Pony Club holds open house Dec. 10 Horsemasters for adults also available

River Valley Pony Club will host its annual open house Saturday, Dec. 10 at The Farm House on Hwy. 176 near Landrum from 10-2 p.m. Local pony clubbers and parents will be at The Farm House to answer any questions you may have. Pony Club is designed to help pony enthusiasts age 5-25 years to learn life lessons through the use of horses and ponies. The club offers mounted and unmounted monthly lessons and annual competitions with other clubs in the region jbtrees - page 10

and country. According to local members, it is also a great way to make friends. Adults who always wanted to be in the pony club now have a chance to join Horsemasters, River Valley Pony Club’s organization for adults. Horsemasters members will be on hand at The Farm House during the open house to answer questions about the group, which helps members learn more about horse management and riding and even gives them an opportunity to compete in teams during pony club’s annual rallies. Cannon Music Camp scholarship application deadline Jan. 8 The deadline for audition applications for the 2011 Cannon Music Camp scholarships awarded by the Laurel Lake Music Society at Tryon Estates is fast approaching. Young musicians are reminded that Jan. 8, 2012 is the final date for applications to be accepted. Early application is strongly suggested to give plenty of time to prepare the two musical selections required for the audition. Each scholarship covers a comprehensive course of intensive musical studies in performance and music theory, plus all room and board expenses for three weeks at the Cannon Music Camp at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. from June 30 to July 21, 2012. This summer camp is limited to 200 students and attracts students

from throughout the East Coast. Students having completed grades 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 in the Polk County or Landrum schools, as well as homeschooled students living in these areas, are eligible to apply. Applicants should have had at least two years of musical training in public or private schools. When my patriotism overcame logic Your storyteller has let his patriotism overcome his reasoning and must apologize for a lapse in logic in his latest column. Here is the problem I created in that column, as pointed out to me by visiting friend, Jim North: After writing about the flag giving the “protester” the right to soil it, I then asked whether it was “what we wanted” to have the Homeland Security guy restrain a veteran who tried to rescue the flag from desecration by a protester. What I missed in my query was that both the Homeland Security guy and the veteran had taken the same oath to defend the Constitution. The Supreme Court, charged with telling us what the Constitution says, tells us that desecrating our flag is a form of speech (conveniently called “expression” now) that is protected by the Constitution. So what it comes down to is that a serviceman on active duty must also allow the desecration of the flag as part of his sworn duty to his country! Now the lawyers will have to tell me whether a veteran is still bound by the oath he took when he was sworn in for his
