Pavillon Treatment Center offers tips for reducing holiday stress Editor’s note: Pavillon Treatment Center in Mill Spring, a not-for-profit residential and outpatient facility for treatment of substance abuse disorders, submitted the following tips for handling holiday stress, written by Dr. John Roberts, Pavillon’s medical director. The information was written to help those in treatment for substance abuse disorders, but center officials said the tips may be useful for anyone experiencing difficulty enjoying the holidays.. Stress and stress-producing situations are always a risk, and every holiday season carries with it the increased pressure to get it all done and stay sane at the same time. The season can also be emotionally and physically draining, but if you keep these tips in mind, you can take advantage of the special opportunities to connect with friends and family in a special way: Recognize there are some things you can’t control about the holidays, such as other people, the calendar, time and the weather. Become aware of what you can control, including your reactions to others, how much time you’re willing to spend on shopping, dinner preparation, party-planning and, if you’re in recovery, going to meetings. Make a list of what can be delegated or eliminated to

make things more relaxing. Create boundaries as to what you can handle comfortably. If you need help, ask for it. The phrase “less is more” is used so much as to be almost ignored but it’s still true, so whatever it is, try to keep it simple before it becomes overwhelming. Go out of your way to reach out to others. You get and give positive energy by doing so. Don’t create unreasonable expectations for yourself or your family or friends. Maintain conservative expectations. If you’re in recovery, make sure and go to your 12-step meetings. During the holidays you can often even find marathon meetings. Keep your sober support group nearby and touch base often, even when everything is going well. Create a stress survival kit: When the stress seems overwhelming, have quick access to friends’ numbers, a couple of movie passes in your wallet, a built-in time for a massage, or a good book, meditation, music, etc. If you’re traveling for the holidays, ask yourself the following before you leave: Is this visit with this person necessary and/or good for my well-being? Will it be good for me emotionally? Would a different time to make the visit be less stressful? Think about what is important to you to do and participate

in during the holidays. Is it time with family, time at home, helping others or engaging in spiritual activities? If you’ve experienced a loss in life, don’t try to pretend everything is just like it was. If you recently lost someone, ask yourself, do I need the support of a counselor, trusted friend or prayer partner to talk with? It is natural to feel mixed emotions. As such, the need for support is greater during this time of year. Rather than follow along with already established rituals again this year, think about creating some of your own, whether it’s lighting a candle to remember someone or volunteering to help others during this time, create your own meaning in the season. Count your blessings. Take some time to write them down and make sure to reflect on

them often during the holidays. John Roberts, MC is medical director for Pavillon, a not-for-profit residential and outpatient treatment center for substance abuse disorders. Its primary residential treatment center is located in Polk County and its full-service outpatient treatment center is located in Greenville, S.C. Dr. Roberts is board-certified in psychiatry, neurology and addiction medicine. He received his doctor of medicine from Louisiana State University and completed his psychiatric residency as well as fellowships in substance abuse and anxiety disorders at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has nearly 20 years of experience serving as an assistant professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Landrum wrestling bests Blacksburg, loses to Spartanburg by Joey Millwood

Landrum wrestling hosted region foe Blacksburg and 4A Spartanburg on Friday, Dec. 16. The Cardinals beat Blacksburg 48-26, but dropped the match to Spartanburg 54-26. This was the second straight night against 4A competition for the Cardinals. On Thursday, Dec. 15, Landrum squared off with Boiling Springs, and the team will wrestle in a Dorman tournament next week. This early season schedule was meant to be tough, according to Landrum coach Josh Fowler. “It’s valuable wrestling experience for us,” he said. “It helps us prepare for our playoffs and our region.” The flurry that follows will be the tournament season for wrestling teams in Spartanburg County and then region matchups beginning in January. Against Blacksburg, the Cardinals got pins from Houston Burch, Andrew Burns and Edward Molina. Landrum’s top two wrestlers, Danny Seay and Josh Jones, won by forfeit. In their matchup against the Vikings, Spartanburg dominated early, but the Cardinals got some good matches out of Seay and Jones. Seay pinned Freddy Juarez with 1:28 left to go in the first period in the 153-lb weight class. Jones pinned Christopher Bouknight with 36 seconds left in the first period. Jeremy Graham pinned Spartanburg’s Christian Gilchrist with 1:08 left in the first period. “(The tough schedule) makes it easier on us in the long run,” Fowler said.

My son’s wish list is short, call me Daddy, I happen to know how to get in touch with Santa sweet and to the point. He wants (or the Spirit of Christmas, or the anything that is sports. I can find Elf on the Shelf or whatever my entire stores dedicated to such a fellow parents do at home for the request. I can see myself walking magic of the season). Hard to do at Christmas-

time. Santa and Mrs. Claus must stick to it religiously in order for Christmas to be enjoyable and sane. There is nothing wrong with sticking with a few simple things to get the kids, just like the good ol’ days. I have never experienced those days, but there probably was a time when Ma and Pa gave each of their kids a present or two, and that was sufficient. Modern society has taught us that a present or two is like an hors d’oeuvre at an all-you-can eat buffet. Skip the appetizers, bring me the fullcourse meal! Walk through Wal-Mart and look at the faces of all the people standing in line with their shopping carts full of “stuff” that they just had to buy. The droned look says it all. To most, it’s just a routine we go through every year. It doesn’t have to be that way – we’ve made it like that. We can enjoy the season without buying up the store and maxing out our resources. We can give so much more than material gifts. I only hope my kids grow up to know that. Mr. Claus is just happy with a new pair of underwear, socks and some long johns for Christmas. Tryon Fine Arts Center is taking registrations for Kindermusik, an international music and movement program for families with children ages newborn to age seven, starting Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. Students will attend 30-minute weekly classes held at the Tryon Fine Arts Center and taught by Bryant Belin, owner and director of VP Music Studios in Hendersonville, N.C. According to Belin, in a Kindermusik class, parents and their children play and learn through joyful activities, using age-appropriate music and

movement. “Parents learn more about their child’s unique developmental process, and the shared learning experience creates a unique bond as the child associates learning with fun, musical play,” Belin said. “The approach is research-based and researchproven, and it’s fun for kids and caregivers.” The Kindermusik system is designed to improve coordination and balance, as well as critical and creative thinking skills. The one-on- one parent and child interaction nurtures self-esteem, program designers

say, while the music-making and music listening activities develop self-discipline. The Kindermusik program continues the learning process at home, guided by specially designed books, CDs and games. Tryon Fine Arts Center is currently taking registrations for classes for 2, 3, and 4-6 year olds. For more information on the Kindermusik Program, call TFAC at 828-859-8322 or visit www. kindermusik.com. This year, pre-kindergarten through fifth grade classes at Sunny View Elementary School participated in the annual school-wide food drive. The school collected more than 850 non-perishable items were collected and donated to the Thermal Belt Outreach Ministry’s food pantry. According to school officials, everyone had a great time and the friendly competition between classes made collecting fun. Mr. Cash’s third grade class won the contest of collecting the most items. Responsibility and caring for others was Sunny View Elementary’s focus for November in the school’s character education program. Teaching students to care for and be kind to others is essential education for children to become happy, responsible adults, Sunny View Elementary officials said. (photo submitted by Ginger Turner)
