Tryon asking for sealed bids on depot plaza property Town to open bids Jan. 27 by Leah Justice

After receiving two upset bids on a 0.47-acre parcel a local dentist offered to purchase for $8,000, the

Town of Tryon approved selling the property by sealed bids. Tryon Town Council met Tuesday, Dec. 20, recessed that meeting and reconvened Wednesday, Dec. 21 in order to reject all bids and approve going to sealed bids with

conditions on the sale. The town is giving until 3 p.m. Jan. 27 to submit potential buyers bids. Conditions include that within 120 days of the sale of the prop(Continued on page 3)

erty the buyer must obtain zoning and building permits to construct a stick building with a minimum of 1,800 square feet and obtain a certificate of occupancy within two years. Council discussed its process with residents, namely Bill Crowell, who was the first to offer an upset bid to Dr. John Hooker’s original $8,000 offer. Crowell said the lot is basically free at $8,000. He said his property is almost the same size as the depot plaza property and his property has a county tax value of $77,000. The depot plaza property survey came in at only $17,000 for land in downtown Tryon, with a prepaved parking lot and mountain views, Crowell said. “That’s why I jumped in on this,” Crowell said. “It’s free at $8k.” Crowell also expressed concern over what he called the town’s “back door deal” with Dr. Hooker without the public’s knowledge.

Council members and the mayor disagreed, saying they followed proper process. “I got involved in this mainly because I didn’t like the back door dealings with Hooker and the town,” Crowell said. Crowell said Hooker had time to draw up plans for a building, while the rest of the public had 10 days to enter an upset bid. Councilman Roy Miller said he took offense to Crowell’s comments. “There was no back door,” Miller said. “You can have your own independent appraiser. You have put your upset bid in and that’s fine. That’s how the process works. “ Crowell said when the town wants to put a piece of property up for sale it should make it public. Councilman Doug Arbogast and others said the town didn’t put the property up for sale. Hooker approached the town and said he had an idea and made an offer on the property. Arbogast told Crowell if he’d come to the town and said he was

interested in developing the property the town would have done the same for him. “It’s not that the town decided to sell the piece of property,” Arbogast said. “Someone came in with an interest.” The property is approximately 0.47 acres and lies off the depot parking lot. The property is bor-

pecially right now, but I’ve loved experiencing all of the different cultures, languages and food.” This isn’t the first time the Hamrick family has lived abroad. The family lived and taught on the island of Saba in the Dutch West Indies when their children were younger. This time they live in Al Ain, a city the size of Boston located in the United Arab Emirates and quite different from their former Polk County and Landrum homes. There the Hamrick’s kids – Britain, 13; Avery, 11; and Carter, 9 - see more camels and sand dunes than horses and tree-covered mountains; an experience the Hamricks always hoped their kids would eventually have one day. “We were enjoying our life in the states but knew that we would want the children to have further exposure to other cultures during their formative years,” David Hamrick said. “We also pursued options in India and the United Kingdom, but the pieces seemed to fall into place most easily for working in Abu Dhabi.” The Hamricks traveled to Abu Dhabi in mid-August on a twoyear teaching contract with the Abu Dhabi Education Council. In a brand new school about an hour from Al Ain, Hamrick teaches third graders English, math and science. She said the job could be challenging for many reasons

– the kids must learn their typical subject matter and learn to speak English at the same time. At home, David teachs the Hamrick’s own children. “Travel and cultural experiences have been important to us individually and as parents, so we knew that this would be an informative and educational journey in that respect,” said David. Teaching in a foreign country, especially through a program that provides some assistance with living expenses, allows the family to carry out their lives the way they discussed before even having kids, David said. “Since the expenses of regular travel can be considerable, working internationally makes seeing other parts of the world a more feasible possibility for our family,” David said. And there weren’t as many roadblocks to them continuing on with life as they did in the states, David said. The culture there, he added, is more open than in some Arab countries but more conservative than here in America. He said they were worried they’d have trouble finding dietary options seeing as all family members are vegetarian, but that has not presented an issue either. In fact, it’s been far from the case seeing as most any food from around the world is represented in various restaurants and grocery stores. More than 80 percent of the (Continued on page 6)

residents there are ex-patriots with individuals from Asian countries as well as Europe, Africa, North America and Australia. “We’ve confirmed that, as expected, there are many more similarities than differences between ourselves and the Arab people,” David said. “It is unfortunate that the actions of a relatively small group of religious zealots have caused many to fear Muslims and their faith. Individuals here from throughout the Middle East have been friendly and accepting and hold America and its citizens in high regard. Carter is fascinated by the five times daily call to prayer, which is broadcast throughout the city (much like church bells in America) and signifies for Muslims to proceed to the Mosque.” The Hamricks have learned a lot about other cultures via their neighbors, as well. “Where we live is a mix of people from all around – today they [the Hamrick kids] have been outside riding bikes and playing soccer with kids that don’t speak English and my kids don’t speak Arabic,” Alison said. The Hamrick kids have made friends in their neighborhood, Alison and David said, by playing

rugby at the local club. Britain, an avid rider who competed locally at Harmon Field and FENCE, has been able to continue riding at the equestrian center there. Alison said she was surprised to also meet two people who knew quite a lot about where she and her family were from – Polk County and Landrum. When they arrived in Abu Dhabi they stayed in a hotel for three weeks as they waited for the school to be completed. As they sat having coffee one morning, the Hamricks struck up a conversation with a fellow teacher who turned out to be from Hendersonville; another man they met was from Charlotte. “It goes to show you how very, very, very small the world is,” Alison said. The Hamrick’s contract runs through the 2012 school year, after which they will be thinking about what the best move is for their children as they begin to enter high school. “Living and working here is definitely a beneficial arrangement for our family’s current dynamic and we are grateful for the experience we continue to have,” David said.

Local filmmaker releases film about spirit, craft of Lichty Guitars Filmmaker Erik Olsen recently spent time on location at the shop of Tryon guitar builder Jay Lichty, filming the creation of a guitar from rough wood planks to the strumming of the first tune. The project reflects a collaboration of crafts. Olsen worked with cameras, lenses, lights and jibs while Lichty’s tools included sanders, hand planes, chisels and routers. At its conclusion, Olsen produced a film that “powerfully captures the spirit and passion of custom guitar builder Jay Lichty while Lichty completed a Brazilian Rosewood dreadnought guitar,” said Corrie Woods of Lichty Guitars. “The film ‘Luthier Jay W. Lichty’ is a short video feature whose appeal reaches far beyond the interests of a guitar builder or player. Olsen tells a story that touches all the senses Tryon luthier Jay Lichty creates a guitar while filmmaker Erik Olsen records the process. Dorothy Oakes McGill, 93, died at her home Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011. Born in Wales, she emigrated with her mother, Anne, and four siblings to join her father, John, in Philadelphia in 1926. After graduating from high school in Upper Darby, Penn., she graduated from secretarial school in Philadelphia, then worked as a secretary to “Jack” Kelley, Grace Kelley’s father. Growing up during the Great Depression and as a young bride during World War II shaped her life. Living in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey and South Carolina, she finally settled in Columbus. She volunteered with hospice and St. Luke’s Hospital and worked at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. Ms. McGill was a member of the Tryon Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and doing crossword puzzles. She was

predeceased by her twin brother, Alec; a brother, Bert, and two sisters, Amy and Lucy. She is survived by her two sons, James McGill and his wife, Frances of Lynchburg, Va. and Dr. John McGill and his wife, Margaret, of Bangor, Maine, as well as eight grandchildren: Laurie McGill of Portland, Ore.; Timothy McGill of Asheville, N.C.; Catherine McGill and her husband, Dan Harder, of Guilford, Conn.; Abigail Bragg of Orlando, Fla.; Christine Mihan and her husband, Eric, of Bangor, Maine; Ronald Kennon of Athol, Mass.; Angela Martin of Bedford County, Va. and Virginia Ayers of Madison Heights, Va., as well as six great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at Tryon Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m. Dec. 28, Tryon, with Rev. Mary Potter officiating. Creasys celebrate 50 years of marriage • Depot Al and Fran Creasy of Tryon will celebrate their 50th anniversary Dec. 29 with two days of festivities with family and friends. The Creasys were married Dec. 29, 1961 at the First Methodist Church in Murfreesboro, Tenn. They first met 67 years ago when Al’s brother was dating Fran’s aunt. Fran was 5 years old and Al was 9. Four years later they were junior attendants in that couple’s wedding. The Creasys have two daughters: Elaine (Tom) Grella and Melinda (Steve Fitzgerald). They also have seven grandchildren. Al was a LtJG in the Navy, and retired after 35 years with State Farm Insurance Companies as assistant vice president, data processing in the corporate headquarters, Bloomington, Ill. Fran was a band and chorus director, taught flute for 60 years and retired as director of music

Polk’s got Talent to support Vocal Impressions trip Television has its popular “American Idol,” “America’s Got Talent” and “Dancing With the Stars” — all competitions to identify great talent. Polk County now has “Polk’s got Talent,” a local talent competition and significant fundraiser for the Polk County High School choral group and competition team, “Vocal Impressions.” The group hosting the February fundraiser, Patrons for the Performing Arts, is looking for individuals and performing groups for a multi-week competition. “We wanted to provide a platform for our students, friends, and neighbors to showcase their talents while raising money for the very worthy cause of music education,” said Patrons for the Performing Arts president BiBi Freer. “We also wanted to plan an event that would attract the best talent in Polk County and we think we have hit the mark with this ambitious but

highly entertaining idea.” Talented individuals and groups are signing up for the competition in two categories: Junior, (up to 18 years of age) and Open (confident of your talent against any age group). Entry fee for juniors is $15, plus an additional $3 per person in the group. For example, the fee for a four-person group in juniors would be $24. Entry fee for open is $25 plus an additional $5 per person in the group. An OPEN duo would be $30. Individuals, duos or groups compete against each other for an overall first, second and third place award in their entry group, either junior or open. Its tough on folks who can’t afford to join a hunting club, or may not know anyone well enough to get permission to hunt private lands. That being said, the quality of deer in our county should continue to improve, largely in part to the efforts of hunters. The poor actions

of a small select few, give hunters a bad rep to a lot of folks. But the majority of hunters care for the resources they use, and actually try to improve it. Here is an unofficial total of the deer harvested in Polk County this year, not counting those checked in at check in stations in the area: Total deer - 838. Including 416 antlered deer, 54 button bucks and 368 does. There were also eight black bears reported.

TFAC to offer Kindermusik in 2012 • Talent Tryon Fine Arts Center (TFAC) is taking registrations for Kindermusik, an international music and movement program for families with children ages newborn to age 7, starting Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. Students will attend 30-minute weekly classes held at the Tryon Fine Arts Center and taught by Bryant Belin, owner and director of VP Music Studios in Hendersonville, N.C. According to Belin, in a Kindermusik class, parents and their children play and learn through joyful activities, using age-appropriate music and movement. “Parents learn more about their child’s unique developmental process, and the shared learning experience creates a unique bond as the child associates learning with fun, musical play,” Belin said. “The approach is research-based and research-proven, and it’s fun for

kids and caregivers.” The Kindermusik system is designed to improve coordination and balance, as well as critical and creative thinking skills. The one-on- one parent and child interaction nurtures selfesteem, program designers say, while the music-making and music listening activities develop self-discipline. The Kindermusik program continues the learning process at home, guided by specially designed books, CDs and games. Tryon Fine Arts Center is currently taking registrations for classes for 2-3 and 4-6 year olds. First round of competition will be 6-9 p.m. Feb. 6-7 at the Tryon Movie Theatre. Talent advancing to the second round will compete from 7-10 p.m. Feb. 20-21. The finals will be 7-10 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Polk County High School Performing Arts Auditorium. Audience member’s ticket prices for the first round of competition will be $2 for students, $5 for adults. For the second round of competition, prices are $3 for students, $5 seniors and $8 for adults. The final competition is $5 for students, $8 seniors and $10 adults. Many schools are seeing funds cut for music classes and instruments. Individuals and communities have to create fundraisers to provide schools and students with funds to keep music a part of

the curriculum. Audience tickets will be sold for each level of the contest, designed to be a fun-filled family evening of entertainment. Local celebrities like Brook Hannon, Woody Cowan, Susie Kocher and Aaron Green will serve as judges. We hope local talent will sign up for this interesting series of programs. The goal is to have at least 30 individuals and groups perform, in each category with the semi-final week whittling that number down to 10 finalists in each category to continue on to compete in the finals. Also, we hope the community will support Polk’s got Talent by buying tickets to the performances and by purchasing sponsorships that are available for printing and advertising, cash and music-related gift prizes for the evening shows place-winners. Operation Magi surprises 120 Landrum children with gifts

Operation Magi is a cooperative venture of local schools, area businesses and churches. It is a Christmas gift to all the children in the area whose parents have fallen on tough times this year. This year, because of the economy, a couple of benefactors had to drop out. Therefore, the decision was made to limit the project to students in the elementary and middle schools and their younger siblings. “The Grinch tried to steal our Christmas surprises, but we could not, would not let him do it!” said Jan Ludwick. This year Operation Magi surprised 120 children from the Landrum schools. That number doubles as each child receives an outfit of clothing and a toy of their choice for under the Christmas tree. The gifts were donated by members of the Landrum community who filled all the wish lists. (Continued on page 19)
