Group from Asheville, N.C. will also perform. The Eternity Dance Group is part of Asheville’s Urban Arts Institute. According to the Urban Arts Institute’s website, the mission of the Urban Arts Institute is “to enhance students’ lives through artistic expression, to build selfesteem, to improve academic and communication skills, to build community, and to reduce possible gang activity.” The Urban Arts Institute was established in 2007, went into hiatus for several years and was re-established in early September 2010. The institute now regularly serves nearly 300 young, often disadvantaged inner-city residents, aged 5-25 years. Services provided to the youth include classes in dance, studio sound engineering, hip hop workouts, Krump and piano.

“We were very interested in having Eternity perform at our annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration because we wanted other young people to see that there are other alternatives than hanging out in the streets,” said Dr. Joseph Fox, Thermal Belt Friendship Council president. “We think that Polk County youth and young adults will really enjoy watching other young people express themselves through dance.” The Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration is free to the public and is made possible with financial support from the Arthur M. & Frances H. Wilhelm Endowment Fund through the Polk County Community Foundation, as well as the friendship council’s partnership with the Tryon Fine Arts Center. This notice shall be given either by telephone or by the same method used to notify the mayor and the board members and shall be given at the expense of the party notified.” When asked for copies of the written notice and/or copies of the written waivers from councilmen Doug Arbogast and Wim Woody, who did not attend the meeting, town attorney Bailey Nager said none existed. If council had taken a vote in open session last Tuesday, it would have been legal, according to Bluestein and Amanda Martin, a N.C. media law attorney with Stevens Martin Vaughn & Tadych of Raleigh. Although the mayor can vote only in the event of a tie, his presence constituted a quorum and two positive votes from Miller and

Baker would have been a majority. In North Carolina, if a board member abstains from voting and does not have a conflict of interest concerning the issue, the vote counts as a “yes” vote. “The general statutes define quorum of a city or town board as ‘a majority of the actual membership of the council plus the mayor, excluding vacant seats,’” said Martin. “So, even though the mayor only votes to break a tie, his presence is sufficient to establish a quorum for the meeting. Once a quorum was established, the vote of two members would be sufficient to pass a motion to terminate the town manager.” Hembree had been manager of Tryon for approximately three years. He began as interim manager and was later appointed permanent town manager in 2009. Per Hembree’s contract, which was scheduled for review during Tryon’s regular meeting next Tuesday, Jan. 17, Hembree received a five-month severance package.

wait that long, they should give notice of a special meeting rather than handling it as an emergency. “There is no immediate consequence if the notice is not provided, or if the meeting was not appropriately held, but it could be challenged under the statute and one remedy available would be a court order invalidating any action that was taken.” The town violated its own code of procedures by not giving written notice regarding the meeting and not having the members who were not in attendance sign a waiver stating they would not be attending. Tryon’s code of ordinances states, “Emergency meetings of the town board may be called only because of generally unexpected circumstances that require immediate consideration by the board. Only business connected with the emergency may be considered at

an emergency meeting. One of the following two procedures must be followed to call an emergency meeting of the board. “(1) The mayor, the mayor pro tempore, or any two members of the board may at any time call an emergency board meeting by signing a written notice stating the time and place of the meeting and the subjects to be considered. The notice shall be delivered to the mayor and each board member or left at his or her usual dwelling place at least six hours before the meeting. “(2) An emergency meeting may be held at any time when the mayor and all members of the board are present and consent thereto, or when those not present have signed a written waiver of notice, but only in either case if the board complies with the notice provisions of the next paragraph. “Notice of an emergency meeting under (1) or (2) shall be given to each local newspaper, local wire service, local radio station and

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He was the son of Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr., and Alberta Williams King. He graduated from Boston University in 1955 with a Ph.D. in Theology and became the pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1953. He and his wife, Coretta Scott King, had four children. Dr. King began his nonviolent, civil rights activism in 1955, when he led the Montgomery Bus Boycott which began when Mrs. Rosa Parks refused to give her bus seat to a white man. He was also the leader of the famous March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963, where he gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Dr. King is also well-known for his written works, such as his “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” written in 1963 after he was arrested at a non-violent protest. Martin Luther King, Jr., dedicated his life to working towards equality among all races. Dr. King won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, as well as the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the American Liberties Medallion in 1965. Dr. King was assassinated on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee, while organizing a local march. The accused gunman is a man by the name of James Earl Ray, although there is still some speculation as to whether he was the true assassin. assassin. Each year since, every third Monday in January we celebrate Martin Luther King Day to honor the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Financial speaker Dave Ramsey coming to Landrum by Barbara Tilly

Dave Ramsey, best-selling author, talk show host and speaker, will kick off his well-known Financial Peace University (FPU) on Sunday, Jan. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at Landrum First Baptist Church. Tell high school and college kids the truth about life Being a parent or grandparent today is tough work. Too many kids won’t listen to our advice, and for a myriad of reasons, they are less independent and pioneering than we were as kids of just a few generations ago. Schools have banned jungle gyms so Jimmy won’t fall and scuff his knee, Mary’s not allowed to play dodge ball because it would be a tragedy if a ball hit her in the nose, and in many little league sports for the younger kids, they don’t even keep score because there would be hurt feelings if a game had winners and losers. That’s the new reality for today’s kids, and that reality doesn’t teach kids much about life. I usually don’t quote entire works written by others, but I’m going to make an exception and quote 11-rules about life that kids are not and will not be taught in today’s schools or colleges. It’s a good wake-up call for kids and would be a good reminder for those Occupy Wall Street protestors about the realities of life. These 11-rules are excerpted from the book “Dumbing Down our Kids” written by educator Charles Sykes. In his book, Mr. Sykes writes about how feelgood fairness and politically correct teachings are creating an entire future generation of soon-to-be adults that have no concept of reality, and how this approach is actually setting

these kids up for failure in the real world. Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it! Rule 2: The world doesn’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vicepresident with a car and phone until you earn both.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping; they called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time. Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you’ll end up working for one. It’s a New Year, and maybe it’s time our high school and college kids got a dose of reality before they actually have to learn it the hard way.
