Polk Middle students celebrate Chinese Spring Festival

The students in Mrs. Liang’s Mandarin class at Polk County Middle School recently celebrated the Chinese Spring Festival, what most people call the “Chinese New Year.” This festival is to welcome spring, a season that bears new hopes. The students made spring ornaments and decorations for the school’s entrance. Most of the ornaments are red because red is the most popular color in China. The students cut paper into threedimensional Chinese characters that mean “spring.” They folded the paper into a special pattern and then cut the characters out. The final piece has four sides, representing the Chinese phrase phrase .四季如春 sì jì rú chūn. This phrase phrase the Chinese ns of the year expresses would be like spring, warm and full of people’s wish that the four Middle students celebrate the Chinese Spring Festival. Kiwanis to sponsor Aktion Club for adults with disabilities The Tryon Kiwanis Club heard a presentation on Aktion Clubs when Steve McIlwain, Peter Rieke and Jack Hatfield visited the club recently. They are all involved in Aktion Clubs. A community-service group in the Kiwanis family, Aktion Club is open to all adults living with disabilities who want to become community leaders and provide

service to others. There are 24 active Aktion Clubs in North and South Carolina, with more than 600 members. Kiwanis members said the enthusiasm of McIlwain, Rieke and Hatfield for involving adults with disabilities in community service and leadership training was contagious. As a result, the Tryon Kiwanis Club has decided

to sponsor an Aktion Club in this community. Aktion Clubs usually have a monthly meeting and a monthly service project. They have officers, which helps build leadership and decision-making skills. Club members can also attend the annual Aktion Convention of the Carolinas. Kathy Romich, Tryon Kiwanis Club member and administrator

of Synergy in Action, will be the advisor to the Aktion Club. Other sponsors will be solicited in order to bring collaboration to the effort. Those interested in joining the Aktion Club or helping to organize it may call Romich at work, 828-859-0259, or at home, 828-899-4100. – article submitted by Lynn Montgomery

The message said the girl was last seen wearing a pajama shirt, blue shorts and purple tennis shoes near Tryon on Wednesday at 11 p.m. Det. Sgt. Randall Hodge said Lopez picked the girl up from her home around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 25. Her parents discovered she was missing

Thursday around 6:20 a.m. Lopez was a friend of the girl’s family, Hodge said. The sheriff’s office was assisted by the N.C. UDO committee approves MRPO amendments to allow for special uses in certain zoning districts by Samantha Hurst

Polk County’s Unified Development Ordinance committee voted Thursday, Jan. 26 to approve amendments to the Mountainside Ridgeline Protection Ordinance (MRPO). Saluda city commissioner George Sweet thanked the UDO committee for their work, but implored members to think carefully about their next steps as they look into loosening some MRPO restrictions. “I’m very much in favor of ridgeline protection,” Sweet said, “but Saluda Township is not a ridgeline … you can’t see Saluda from down below. I encourage you all to allow as much flexibility as possible for development in Saluda Township.” After recent discussions that the MRPO was too restrictive,

class should be confined to an accessory building of no more than 1,000 square feet. The limit had previously been discussed at 8,000 square feet. “Going up to 8,000 square feet in the mountain ridgeline area would just be a tremendous amount of impermeable roof area,” McDermott said. “It would be really harmful in the runoff it would make and in the earth moving it would take to put that in.” Special uses now allowed would include bed and breakfasts and children’s camps, while conditional uses would be provided for campgrounds and recreational vehicle and travel trailer parks. Saluda resident Hal Green asked board members how (Continued on page 6)

Applications are now available for the Fifth Annual Tryon Arts & Crafts Fall Festival, to be held Saturday, Oct. 13 and Sunday, Oct. 14 at 373 Harmon Field Road in Tryon. This year’s festival will include juried arts and crafts vendors, craft demonstrations, a silent auction, a raffle, food vendors and a crafts corner for children. The festival will be free and open to the public. Vendor applications, rules and more information can be downloaded at www.tryonartsandcrafts. org. Booth space is on a firstcome, first-serve basis. approved. “What body is it that determines if a special or conditional use permit will be granted?” Green asked. “Also, what criteria would be used?” County planner/zoning administrator Cathy Ruth said two separate boards would be responsible for those decisions. Special use cases would go to the county’s zoning board of adjustments for a quasijudicial hearing made up of five individuals. To approve the request, the board must have a four-fifths vote, Ruth said. Meanwhile, conditional use requests for a zoned area must go before the planning board, with approval requiring the majority of votes from seven members.

Decisions from either would need to follow statutory law as their base decision, plus other criteria provided by the UDO committee. Saluda resident Kirk Hall, owner of Orchard Lake Campground, said he felt the requirements placed on a business remained too restrictive even if one of these boards were to approve the use. Hall pointed to areas of the MRPO that require an individual or company to hire site surveyors, environmental engineers and various other experts to prove that an area is stable enough for development. “We want to do what’s right,” Hall said, “but please consider it’s got to be reasonable and cost effective. Some of these regulations are going to be astronomical to try to fulfill.” UDO member Wayne Horne said he felt the UDO should do away with the 2,200 feet eleva-

tion restriction altogether. “It hurts the whole county because there are so many regulations and restrictions,” Horne said. “Don’t just have some sort of set mark and say you are going to have to do this no matter what… give people a chance.” McDermott, however, said not all of the things Hall cited would be applicable in all situations. Some of those restrictions apply at only the very highest elevations, not at the 1,650 feet, McDermott said.

Overholt expected to carry on family basketball tradition by Joey Millwood

Those in attendance at Polk County’s girls’ basketball games this season probably have two reactions after a cursory glance at the varsity roster. For opponents, there were probably a few eyes rolling and comments like, “not again.” For Polk County fans, there’s a good bit of celebration. Why would Polk’s roster be significant in these two reactions? That’s an easy one. Another Overholt has been tearing it up for the Wolverines. This time, it’s Kara Overholt. The freshman has been on the varsity squad the entire season and is finally starting to eat up some minutes. Like her brothers, Derrick and Andre, and her sister, Krista, before her – the latest edition of the Overholts is going to leave a mark on Polk County athletics. “She’s a great athlete,” Polk coach Craig Culbreth said. “She’s willing to work hard to

get better.” As the season has went on, Overholt’s minutes have increased. It wasn’t an immediate adjustment from the middle school game, but she has progressed. “The speed of the game has been quicker,” Overholt said. “It’s been a change. I’m hanging in there.” But if anyone has the pedigree to adjust to the game, it’s Overholt. Her brothers – Derrick and Andre – were both good basketball players at Polk County. Her sister – Krista – played on one of the strongest basketball teams Polk has had thus far. Overholt is aware of the path she is heading down that was cleared by her siblings. “I feel like there are big footsteps I have to fill,” she said. “I feel like I have to step it up a little bit.” Her sister is at all of her basketball games and there are conversations afterwards with

Kara Overholt

some critiques. “She gives me tips,” Overholt said of her sister, Krista. “After the game, she points things out I need to work on. I appreciate that. It makes me better.” Culbreth coached both the Overholt brothers and he’s got a little message for them. As

good of shots that Derrick and Andre had, Kara’s will be better, Culbreth said half-jokingly. “Kara is going to be one of those special players at Polk County High School in any sport she plays,” Culbreth said. “As good as she is an athlete; she’s an even better person.”

Timberlake presents workshop on ‘The Art of Facilitation’

Mary SaSSer RNC, FNP

Call for Appointment!

Mary Sasser, FNP

The Scholars Academy of Spartanburg at USC Upstate, which includes students from the seven school districts of Spartanburg County, is asking for your help. The students are participating in a community service project to assist less fortunate students in Spartanburg County.

For the January/February community service project, The Scholars Academy is participating in Teens for Jeans, a project through Aeropostale that helps homeless teens. If you would like to assist these students with this project simply drop off any pair of jeans that would be appropriate for an elementary, middle school, and/or high school student to any school in District One and

the Scholars Academy students will collect them. These donated jeans do not have to be new; previously worn jeans (without holes) are fine. This project will end on Feb. 10, and the winners are announced soon after Feb. 11. The student council will turn in the jeans to Aeropostale. – article submitted by Paula Brooks
