Candidate filing begins for Polk elections

Another 10-day upset bid process begins

On the last day of the upset bid process, Overmountain Trace Holdings LLC submitted a bid of $3,858,886.86 for White Oak

Development, which was sold at auction on Feb. 1.

The original bid was placed by Tryon Equestrian Properties LLC for $3,675,130.34 during the auction held at the Polk County Courthouse. Following the Feb. 1 bid, an upset bid process began

that ended Feb. 13 at 5 p.m.

Another upset bid process will now begin following Overmountain Trace Holdings’ bid yesterday. The new deadline for upset bids is Feb. 23, with a five

Correction In Polk County District Court results on page 10 in the Friday, Feb. 10 Tryon Daily Bulletin an egregious error was made on the Bulletin staff’s part that listed erroneous charges against Samantha Emory Foster. Foster was not convicted of misdemeanor larceny as the court results showed.

Unfortunately, in typesetting the records, the Bulletin’s reporter inadvertently included under Samantha Foster’s name misdemeanor larceny charges that were actually for Laura Anne Freeman, who was sentenced to three years unsupervised probation and $9,100 in restitution.

The reporter and staff apologize greatly to Foster for the error.

The Bulletin assures readers that we are typically very meticulous about reporting these court results as they are written by the court.

The staff plans to put in additional steps to make sure something like this does not happen again.

Literary Open Stage at Upstairs Artspace Feb. 17 The Literary Open Stage returns this Friday, Feb. 17, at the Upstairs Artspace in Tryon. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the readings begin at 7 p.m.

percent greater bid required, or a bid of $4,051,831.20.

Attorney Lara Baker, representing Overmountain Trace Holdings, submitted the upset bid at the courthouse. A $192,944.34 deposit was made, or five percent of the bid. It is not known who owns Overmountain Trace Holdings LLC, but the Overmountain Victory Trail is known to run through part of the White Oak property.

White Oak Development is a planned 941.93-acre subdivision located in the Green Creek Township. Just under 940 acres of the land was purchased in October 2003 by White Oak Development Partners, LLC for $3.25 million.

The developers ran into financial issues, after which they could not meet deadlines to pay Polk County for a water line ran to the subdivision. White Oak still owes Polk County $141,260 for the water line and approximately $104,000 to Polk for 2010 and 2011 taxes.

A judge ordered White Oak to pay the more than $140,000 to Polk County after the county sued the development for not completing

payments for the water line.

White Oak’s original plans included a golf course/clubhouse, vineyard, equestrian center, nature trails, a lake and tennis facilities, among other amenities.

The development has constructed nine holes of the planned golf course. There are five homes constructed at the development, one of which has obtained a certificate of occupancy.

White Oak also faces a lawsuit from a property owner who claims that White Oak agreed to buy back their property if the development did not complete the golf course and equestrian facilities as proposed. Donald and Priscilla Neault filed a lawsuit on Nov. 4, 2011 and are asking for $448,000, which was their purchase price.

White Oak completed half of the planned 18-hole golf course around October 2008, but since that time has not completed further work and the planned golf facilities of Club at White Oak have never been completed, states the Neaults’ lawsuit.

In December 2011, White Oak officials said they were working to obtain a development partner in order to get all the debts paid and to re-launch the development.

Norris Marston died Feb. 9, 2012, after a long battle with congestive heart failure. He was 80 years old. Though presently of Tryon, he was a long-time resident of Cape Ann, Mass. Born in Boston, he grew up in Rockport, Mass. and for many years was the doyen of the family “farm” on Gloucester’s Dennison St. “ N o c k y, ” as he was known to most everyone, was a retired Delta Airlines captain.

In 1953, he graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, earning a bachelor of science degree in marine and electrical engineering and an officer’s commission in the Naval Reserve.

Following a brief stint as a merchant officer, he transferred to the regular navy and attended flight school in Pensacola, Fla. For a number of years he flew out of the South Weymouth Naval Air Station, patrolling the east coast of North America and Canada in command of a Lockheed P2V (“Sub Hunter”).

As part of his distinguished

career as a Navy pilot, he attended atomic bomb school and was among an elite few certified to fly planes carrying the “Betty Weapon.” A pilot’s pilot, he was encouraged to become an astronaut, but his 6’4” height kept him from being selected.

Following his Navy service, he joined Delta Airlines, for whom he was a commercial pilot for the next 35 years.

Norris loved the sea. He was an excellent sailor with an impressive Rhoads-19 racing record at the Annisquam Yacht Club. He was a fixture in Lobster Cove and well received in many ports along the east coast and the Chesapeake Bay aboard his beloved 55 ft. Wellington ketch, “Amazing Grace.”

A devoted father and mentor to dozens of young people who valued his experience and advice, he was known for his great love of life, his stories and his wonderful sense of humor. His was a life proudly and joyfully lived. He was truly an officer and a gentleman and will be greatly missed.

The Landrum girls’ basketball team won the Region II-1A championship on Friday with a 49-46 win over St. Joseph’s. The Lady Cardinals hoisted the trophy after a dramatic double overtime victory in a one-game playoff for the region title.

As the seconds ticked off the clock Friday night, the momentum seemed to be with St. Joseph’s. Landrum’s back was against the wall. Landrum and the Lady Knights were in a onegame playoff for the Region II-1A championship and the Lady Cardinals would eventually win 49-46, but not without some drama.

The Lady Cardinals were up

late in the fourth quarter, but a shot by Elizabeth Moore in the final seconds set the game into overtime.

St. Joseph’s Cara Mohr hit five free throws to start overtime to give St. Joseph’s the 43-40 lead in overtime.

The drama, however, was just beginning. With 22.3 left on the clock, Landrum guard Lauren Pitts rattled home a three-point basket from the top

of the key to tie the game at 43. The Lady Cardinals had a chance to close out the game, but with three seconds left on the clock, St. Joseph’s Megan Heijjer was fouled. She went to the free throw line, but couldn’t sink her two free throws that would have sealed the deal.

The game was going into a second overtime.

“I knew then we were going to win,” Pitts said.

Pitts proved to be prophetic.

Sydnie Brown continued the momentum in the second overtime. In the first minute she had a steal and four points to give Landrum the lead.

“I just knew we had to get something going,” she said.

“We were wearing them down.

We knew it. They knew it.”

Atkins led all scorers with 14 points. Brown added 10 points and Pitts scored nine. Moore led the way for St. Joseph’s with 12.

The scene that played out was like something from a movie – a real life version of an underdog story.

The Lady Cardinals overcame early season struggles and found themselves in a place that not too many would’ve projected for them at the start of the season. Landrum lost its top two scorers and leaders in Amber Whiteside and Jordan Jenkins. Landrum has three seniors on the squad and only

one of those played basketball last season.

The odds were against them, but the Lady Cardinals defied it all and hoisted their first region championship trophy since 2007.

Landrum beat St. Joseph’s last week after coming from behind in the fourth quarter.

Landrum coach Deon Brice knew it was going to be a war in the rubber match, which was a one-game playoff to decide the region championship after a three-way tie in the regular season. Blacksburg was the third team, but was eliminated on a tie breaker.

As he sat there and thought back on the roller coaster season, Brice said, “They’ve grown by leaps and bounds. They just have to believe. Expect the unexpected and believe.”

House of Flags has display in N.C. Welcome Center on I-26 Several weeks ago the House of Flags Museum in Columbus hosted the staff of the state welcome center for a tour of the museum. During the tour, the group discussed the possibility of the welcome center on I-26 helping to guide visitors to the

museum.

House of Flags officials announced recently that the museum now has a display in the North Carolina Welcome Center on I-26 at the Columbus-Tryon-Charlotte exit. The full-size “Hornet’s Nest” flag,

North Carolina’s first flag, is on display with a placard describing British General Cornwallis’ remarks that led to the design of the flag.

Brochures for the museum are also located on a table.

Museum officials said the

next step is securing “cultural attraction” signs from the N.C. Department of Transportation at the east and westbound exits off I-26 and Highway 74.

he served. Frank operated the first ambulance service in Polk County for many years, and in l955 he, along with a brother-inlaw, opened the only perpetual care cemetery in Polk County, Polk Memorial Gardens.

The son of the late Frank K. Sr. and Flora Fisher McFarland, he graduated from Tryon High School in l94l, where he was an accomplished athlete, being named MVP of the all county basketball conference. He graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in l943 and was licensed as a funeral director and embalmer on his 21st birthday, April 20, 1944.

Frank joined the U.S. Navy, serving aboard the U.S.S. Dauphin as a pharmacist mate during WWII. Upon his return from the war he joined his father and mother in the operations of McFarland’s, serving thousands of families in his 70-year career.

In l950, he married Wayne Burkehead Strother of Woodruff, S.C. Frank was active in the community over the years. At the time of his death he was the oldest living Tryon volunteer fireman, serving for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Tryon Rotary Club and member of the VFW Post, 4505, Tryon. Frank was an avid tennis player and enjoyed all sports his entire life. He was a member of the Tryon Presbyterian Church, Tryon.

Surviving are: a son, Frank Kenneth McFarland III; daughterin-law, Darlene McFarland, and a grandson, Frank K. “Keen” McFarland IV, all of Tryon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Wayne S. McFarland, who died in 2007; a stepson, Gary Strother, and three sisters, Elizabeth Burleson, Mary Hague and Ruth Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 in the

McFarland Funeral Chapel, with Dr. James McPherson, Dr. Darryl E. Maxwell and Dr. Chris Osborn officiating.

Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus, with military rites by the Polk Memorial Burial Squad.

Family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel, Tryon.

Everyone is invited to return to the McFarland Funeral Chapel for a reception immediately following the committal in Polk Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to St. Luke’s Hospital, Building on Excellence, New Orthopedic Wing, 101 Hospital Drive, Columbus, N.C. 28722.

She was a member of Ingleside Baptist Church and a faithful servant of the Lord. She was also a homemaker and enjoyed quilting handmade quilts from her home.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Lawson and husband Albert of Campobello; three sons, Roy D. Wilson of Columbus, Jerry Wilson of Campobello and Troy Wilson and wife Sandra of Campobello. She has six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one brother, Larry Howell of Campobello; and six sisters, Ann Brooks, Azalee Howell and Gertrude Hall of

Inman, S.C., Cleo Thompson of Campobello, Nellie Sellars of Greer, S.C. and Myrtle Miller (Burl) of Mauldin, S.C.; and a sister in law, Evelyn Howell of Campobello.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Enoch Howell and Henry Howell; a son, Donald M. Wilson, and a granddaughter, Tanya Lawson.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Feb. 12 from 1:30-2:45 p.m. at Ingleside Baptist Church, Hwy. 176, Landrum. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. at the church, conducted by Rev. Everett Wallace and Rev. Paul Edwards.

The family is at the home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, P.O. Box 127, Landrum, S.C. 29356 or to Ingleside Baptist Church, 100 Frank Clinton Road, Landrum, S.C. 29356.

Frank K. McFarland Jr. Frank Kenneth McFarland Jr., 88, of Tryon, died Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012 in Hospice House of the Carolina Foothills, Landrum.

A native of Tryon, he was the president and owner of McFarland Funeral Chapel Inc. and was instrumental in building the facility at its current location in l962.

He served as a Western District Representative to the N.C. Board of Funeral Directors Association in the late l950s and was well known for his caring concern to the many families
