Landrum approves funding for quilt trail by Samantha Hurst

If you are interested in protecting the area’s water and natural environment, you may want to come to the Polk County Public Library Thursday, Feb . 23 at 6 p.m. for a presentation given by the Green River Watershed Alliance. The group’s purpose is to address the need to build a collaborative environmentally protective plan for the Green River watershed.

Here’s a list of upcoming meetings and events for area nonprofit community and governmental organizations:

Today

Landrum City Council members pledged the city’s support for the creation of a Landrum Quilt Trail during their meeting Tuesday, Feb. 14. “I think that it is a good project – I think it will bring a lot of people here,” said Councilman Johnny Carruth. Councilwoman Jan Horton agreed and made a motion that the city provide $5,200 in hospitality tax funding for the project. Ellen Henderson, a representative for the Landrum Quilters, which plans to organize the trail, said these trails create a lot of buzz for a community. “[Quilt trails] are known, where they exist elsewhere, to bring in tourism and for the economic impact they have on those towns (Continued on page 7)

Columbus and a water line soon to be constructed to connect Polk County’s Mill Spring well system to Columbus. Columbus also approved an addition to the agreement called a pass-through agreement, which says that if Polk County purchases or sells water from another entity to which Columbus is connected, such as Tryon, Columbus will receive a one-percent pass-through revenue. The pass-through agreement will also apply if in the future Columbus purchases water from another entity to which Polk County is connected. The same pass-through agreement is currently drafted for a joint agreement between Columbus, Saluda and Tryon for a line they share along Howard Gap Road. An example used in the pass-through agreement says if Columbus sold 1,000,000 gallons of water to Saluda at $5 per 1,000 gallons, for a total revenue of $5,000, Tryon would receive one percent of the total revenue, or $50. The same one percent would go to Columbus if Polk County purchased water from Tryon or vice-versa. Polk County approved the interconnect agreement with Columbus on Feb. 6. County commissioners also approved the low bid for construction received from Steppe Construction at $592,465. The agreement between

Encore! –– Carolyn Ashburn, Saluda Columbus and Polk County will extend for 10 years and automatically renew for subsequent five-year periods unless any party notifies the other in writing at least 60 days prior to expiration that it does not want to renew for another five years. The pass-through agreement regarding the one-percent payment was approved by Columbus Town Council for an initial one-year period. Polk County will also have to approve the one-percent pass-through agreement, which was included on the agenda for Monday’s county meeting. The county is still awaiting a public water supply permit prior to construction beginning. The water line will be a 12-inch line that will run approximately two miles along Hwy. 108 between the end of Columbus’ 10-inch water line that serves Polk County High School and Polk County’s well system located at Polk County Middle School. Polk County engineer Dave Odom reported to county commissioners on Feb. 6 that rights of way are being obtained and the county could add up to 12 new customers. Polk County is also considering adding to the project a section of water line approximately ¼ mile long along Hwy. 9 north from the Mill Spring crossroads. The county is currently in discussions with CooperRiis Healing Farm, located just beyond the Mill Spring crossroads, regarding running a water line to their facility during the project as well.

Autumn Care of Saluda announces new arrangement with Park Ridge Geriatrics for residents’ health care Autumn Care of Saluda has entered into a new arrangement with Park Ridge Geriatrics for the provision of health care for its residents. The new medical director for the facility is Dr. Ben Pusser, D.O., who will also serve as the attending physician for the facility’s residents. He will be assisted by Whitney Doiron, FNP, along with other medical staff belonging to the group. “We are excited about the new opportunities Park Ridge Geriatrics brings to our facility,” said Glenn Pierce, administrator. According to Pierce, the change to Park Ridge Geriatrics offers a number of advantages for Autumn Care residents, such as: Direct admission to Park Ridge Health, eliminating the need for a lengthy ER stay. Coordination of care for residents needing hospitalization through the group’s affiliation with Park Ridge Health. Coordination of care with medical specialists at Park Ridge

Health, providing improved communication and coordination of resident care needs. Reduced transportation time for residents needing specialty care. “The transition to Park Ridge Geriatrics has been very smooth,” Pierce said. “The group’s relationship with Park Ridge Health is providing us with other new opportunities as we continue to explore the relationship.” According to Alethea Capps, director of nursing, one of those new opportunities is providing a much-needed service. “Psychiatric services are an important need among our resident population,” Capps said. “With the group’s recent addition of Dr. Julie Iacona, psychiatrist, we have greatly improved our ability to serve the mental health needs of our residents.” The facility will hold a reception in the spring for family and community members to meet the leadership team from Park Ridge Health.

Wagner joins Walker, Wallace & Emerson Realty Walker, Wallace & Emerson Realty recently announced that Jean Wagner has joined the WWE team. Wagner brings a varied real estate experience with her. She earned her B.A. at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. After graduating, she moved to the Cincinnati, Ohio area, joined the Woodlawn Police Dept. and served as a police sergeant with that force. Wagner realized that she always had an interest in architecture and real estate. As a result, she moved to Glendale, Ohio to pursue her dream. She started her own company, Village Properties. She said she chose Glendale because it was a beautiful gas-lit Victorian community that was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In Glendale, Wagner was a residential as well as a commercial investor. She also created the Tea Room at Glendale. Beyond Glendale, Wagner has had investments in the Dunedin and Palm Beach areas of Florida. Locally, Wagner is a homeowner in Tryon and has been an

Jean Wagner

active citizen of this community for more than six years. Jean said she welcomes the opportunity to assist those relocating to the Tryon area or to those seeking to market their home for sale. Both Madelon Wallace and Trux Emerson, co-owners of WWE Realty, said they welcome Wagner to the WWE team. – article submitted by Dulcinea Juenger

Lady Cards win dramatic victory over McBee, 55-51 by Joey Millwood

The Lady Cardinals are quickly becoming the “cardiac kids.” After breezing through the first round of the 1A state playoffs on Monday, Feb. 13 against Ninety Six, the Lady Cardinals found themselves in another dramatic victory on Thursday, Feb. 16 against McBee. Just a week after beating St. Joseph’s for the region championship in double overtime, the

Lady Cardinals advanced to the third round of the playoffs with a come-from-behind 55-51 victory over the Lady Panthers. McBee was up 32-21 at the half and the Lady Cardinals were showing flashes of the team that struggled earlier this season. Those memories faded quickly as Landrum came out in the third quarter and took control. “Early in the game we got a little rattled,” head coach Deon

Brice said. “After half time we calmed down and started playing our game.” Sophomore Taylor Jenkins scored 15 of her 18 points in the game in the second half to lead the surge for Landrum. Jenkins scored 11 of those points in the final five minutes of the game, including shooting 7-for-8 from the free throw line. There were five lead changes in the final two minutes, but Jenkins hit two free

throws with 12 seconds left to ice the game for Landrum. “I don’t think about it,” Jenkins said of the free throws. “I zone everything out.” Lauren Pitts added ten points for Landrum and Becca Burress scored 12. The Lady Panthers were led by Jamelia James with 16. Landrum was scheduled to play Denmark-Olar on Monday, Feb. 20.

Letter to the Editor

Say no to Ni America

To the Editor: In considering the potential privatization of the Tryon water supply, it might be helpful to ponder first on the fact that local people would be giving up immediate control of their water to an entity whose sole motive is profit, and whose managers are accountable to shareholders who live who-knowswhere. This entity exists to earn money for shareholders whose addresses may be Shanghai, Bahrain, Tokyo, Mexico City – or anywhere. Because Ni America is a profitmaking entity, the managers are hired and fired by the shareholders, who expect a good return on their invested dollars. Full disclosure: I am not opposed to profit, and I have some shares invested with a local broker. And, how, one may ask, does an entity make a good profit? They cut costs, while providing a service. And how do they cut costs? Usually

by cutting labor costs by hiring the cheapest competent workers they can find and by buying the cheapest adequate materials they can find. One might well ask local stockbrokers how Ni America is rated, also. Furthermore, do the president, CEO and other officials live in a community serviced by Ni America? Assuming that all shareholders currently live in the U.S., what assurances do we have that foreigners could not buy up a majority of shares at any time? In the event of poor service or disruption of service, what recourse does the town of Tryon have? Can the town legally begin withholding payments? What would be the costs of yet another lawsuit? While I am sure there are good reasons for considering Ni America’s desire to operate our water supply – and I’d still like to know why they want to – my 80+ years have taught me that when I am not sure of a deal, the best response is a categorical “no,” or maybe just a provisional “no.” –– Bill Holcomb, Tryon

Forgotten treasures: Green Creek School photo Two weeks ago, my son asked if I could find a picture of him with his horse, taken sometime during his early teens. Well, I soon found myself on a treasure hunt that hasn’t ended yet! After pulling out books, boxes, and numerous once-important papers, I found lots of forgotten “treasures.” One special treasure that I found was an old 35mm slide, a picture that I had taken in 1969. The students in this picture were eighth graders who had just graduated from Green Creek Green Creek School eighth-grade graduating class, May 1969. State warns scammers using new method to steal According to Debbie S. Brantley of the N.C. Division of Aging and Adult Services, con artists are using a new payment method, combined with old scams, to cheat North Carolinians. Their targets are usually seniors and the bait is unchanged: potential victims are contacted, often by phone, and told they have won cash, a new car or another large prize. In the past scammers often convinced their victims to send money via Western Union or MoneyGram. Now, increasingly, they are using re-

loadable debit cards, Brantley said. After the victims are informed of the prize they won, they are instructed to visit a local WalMart store or other location where Green Dot MoneyPaks are available. They are told to put some money, usually a few hundred dollars, onto a Green Dot reloadable debit card to cover taxes, fees or other charges associated with the prize. Brantley said, once the money has been loaded, the scammers get the card’s account number from the victim. They drain the account of all of its funds in an

electronic transaction that is both instantaneous and untraceable. Green Dot is aware that its services have been abused, Brantley said, and offers anti-fraud tips on its website. She remindeds people never to pay up front for any prize, award or other “winning.” If you spot a scam, report it to the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM or filing a complaint online at www.ncdoj.gov. – article submitted by Lou Parton

Putting it all together: Finishing the grant In the last article we shared the steps for developing the final step of the proposal process – the budget. In this article we will wrap up the series on grant writing by talking about putting it all together. Now that you have the proposal written, foundations and funders often ask for additional items to be submitted with the proposal. These items include the following: • IRS letter, proving that your organization has received its 501(c)(3)/tax exempt status • A list of your current board of directors, their business title and current affiliations • Financial statements from the prior year (the statements should include a balance sheet, profit and loss, audit and 990) • Budget for the current fiscal year and a budget for the

upcoming year, depending on where the grant proposal falls with the current fiscal year of your organization I recommend keeping all of these documents in one file, either a hard copy or a digital file on the computer. It will make life a lot easier as the deadline approaches if you don’t have to go and round up these documents at the last minute. With the additional documents, you are now ready to put it all together and submit the proposal. Many foundations and funders will provide you with a checklist that specifies the order the proposal should be

in when it is submitted. If this is provided make sure you follow their instructions. If you do not have a checklist, follow the steps outlined in this series, starting with the cover sheet, executive summary, need statement, goals and objectives, method section, evaluation section, sustainability section, organizational information, budget and finally the additional items requested. Once everything is in order, don’t forget to have the executive director and/or board chair sign the application/cover sheet. You do not need a fancy binder, but it should all be neatly typed and free of errors. The next series that “Nonprofit Leadership” will embark on will be marketing for nonprofits.

Gant of Asheville Tango will lead a lecture/demonstration called “Explore the Tango on Thursday, March 1 as part of TFAC’s Explore the Arts Series. According to TFAC Executive Director Beth Child, “By bringing QuinTango here, we hope to build audiences with activities surrounding the performance. The “Explore demonstration on March 1 and the post-performance class should help more people learn about this art form than if they were just attending the performance alone. The QuinTango performance at TFAC is made possible in part by an “Arts in Audiences grant from the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding is provided by Main Stage supporting sponsor TD Bank. Reserved seating is available through the TFAC box office, open Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. or Saturday 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., or call 828-859-8322 for more information. – article submitted by Marianne Carruth
