brick facade was initially scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, but weather delayed the project. The new headquarters was built after the previous headquarters building was condemned because of a roof col-

lapse following a December 2010 snowstorm. The former building was torn down, and the new building was constructed on the same lot in a different position to allow for parking in the rear. The original building was

constructed in the 1950s-1960s as a post office. Polk Republican officials said they built the new building to give local Republicans and the community a building to hold meetings and other community functions.

The Foothills Music Club (FMC) will present its annual organ concert, “Musical Moments on the Organ,” on Thursday, March 8 at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of the Congregational Church on Melrose Avenue in Tryon. This is FMC’s second public recital of the year. Organists performing this year will be: • FMC members Carole Bartol, John Gardner and Eleanor Roemer • Lesley Bush, the minister of music at Tryon Presbyterian Church • Susan Mahnke, the organist/choir director for Holy Cross Episcopal Church • Diane Pickens, the director of music/organist for the Congregational Church. The pipe organ in the Congregational Church is a new console that was installed last year. The choir area was also changed and many of the organ pipes were repositioned for bet-

ter sound. The special organ program will include a variety of “musical moments” from favorite composers such as J. S. Bach, Johannes Brahms and Charles Gounod. There will also be selections from a few French composers, such as D’Aquin, Gigout and Boellmann. In addition to the solos, the organ will be used to accompany a choral ensemble of club members and friends singing “The Lord Bless You and Keep You” by John Rutter. Since its formation in 1988, the FMC has maintained a high level of musical excellence while encouraging its members to practice their skills through performances. In addition, the FMC provides scholarships to deserving young musicians in the area to help with their music studies. Auditions for these awards will be held on March 2 and 3 in the Tryon Presbyterian Church. Applications are available by calling 828-894-6493. – article submitted by Eleanor Roemer

Getting set up in Raleigh, meeting constituents in district It’s my honor to represent you again in the North Carolina House. My arrival at the General Assembly was a homecoming as former colleagues welcomed me and made me feel I’d never been away. House Principal Clerk Denise Weeks told me that our district committee appointed me in the shortest time ever for a replacement representative. Our district set a record - 17 days. It usually takes 3-4 months and this gives the General Assembly staff time to get everything set up. This accounts for some of the issues I’m dealing with: like shuffling office space, getting telephones and computers properly connected and waiting for a permanent office address to order business cards and stationery. Even last Thursday when I printed from my state laptop

to my office printer, my letter particularly interested because printed in some unknown place. there was a meth lab bust in BrePlease be patient as I continue vard the week before this meetto work through a backlog of ing. If you have 2005 legislation that I happen thoughts on this please email me to have worked on then. I was at trudi.walend@ncleg.net On a happier note, I was delighted to learn that there was a successful use of our Amber Alert Program in Asheville recently. Amber Alert helps locate missing children who are in danger. I sponsored our state’s Amber Alert bill after a young girl kidnapped in Florida was taken on I-95 through South Carolina and North Carolina, and then murdered in Virginia. My bill almost did not pass because the Highway Department did not have money for the digital signs. We distributed a news article about Amber Alert and the need for sign funds.

Within a short time a company from Winston-Salem arrived in Raleigh with a big check for the first sign. The rest is history. We now have digital signs on all interstate highways. They are used to display Amber Alerts, Silver Alerts, hazard warnings and even the number of minutes to certain intersections. This week you’ll find me in the district. I’ll be meeting with constituents, attending various meetings and events in Transylvania, Henderson and Polk counties. Saturday I was in Polk County where I met with elected officials and many interested citizens. I also attended the opening of a new Republican headquarters. Also I plan to spend time each day in my home office catching up on calls, emails, and letters. Don’t hesitate to contact me with any concerns you have regarding state government. As many of you know my husband, Ken, works in our Raleigh office and in the district. Ken handles many of your concerns or he points you in the right direction. He’s the only retired engineer in the General Assembly and he especially enjoys working with highway projects or issues. Cardinals season ends one game short of championship by Joey Millwood

Landrum head coach Lyn Smith stood almost speechless. Losses have been few and far between for the Cardinals this season en route to arguably the best season Landrum has ever experienced. Landrum’s season ended one game too short for Smith, his team and the Cardinal faithful on Saturday afternoon. For the second time in four years, Landrum played for the upper state finals and were eliminated by Great Falls. The Red Devils beat the Cardinals 49-44. For the most part, the game was a defensive deadlock to the surprise of many. Both teams rolled into the game having finished the season as No.1 and No. 2 in the state. The Cardinals had been averaging nearly 90 points per game in the first three rounds of the state playoffs. “We didn’t shoot very well,” Smith said. “Tonight (the shots) weren’t falling.” In the early going, the Cardinals were carried by their top two scorers Daniel Bridges and Truston Whiteside. Whiteside scored 10 points in the first half and finished the game with 15. Bridges added 13 points. The Cardinals took a 9-2 lead into the final minutes of the first quarter, but a 10-0 run to end the quarter gave Great Falls a 12-11 lead. Landrum was up 23-21 in the final seconds of the first half when Great Falls rebounded a missed 3-pointer and scored a controversial buzzer beater

that had referees approaching the scorers’ table before finally counting the basket. The Red Devils had the lead by the end of the third quarter at 39-35. The Cardinals fought back in the fourth. “We were always willing to put the effort in to get back in the game,” senior point guard

Cole McDowell said. The Cardinals pulled within three points with 2:59 left in the fourth quarter after a basket by senior center Alex Bryant, but weren’t able to claw their way back. “Defensively, I think we played well,” Smith said. If only more shots had fallen.

“You got to make shots to win,” he said. And while the sting of this loss is vivid right now, the fact that the Cardinals had an amazing season isn’t lost on the players and coaches. “We had a good season,” Bryant said. “We played hard. That’s all we could do.”

The Fire Pink Trio

Hendersonville Chamber Music to present Fire Pink Trio March 4 The Fire Pink Trio – Jacquelyn Bartlett, harp; Sheila Browne, viola and Debra Reuter-Pivetta, flute – take the stage at Hendersonville’s First Congregational Church at Fifth Avenue and White Pine at 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 4. The program will begin with the exciting “Suite Popular Espanola” by the contemporary composer Manuel Morena-Buendia and end with Claude Debussy’s three movement “Sonate” and contain several musical surprises in between. Harpist Bartlett’s solo debut in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall when she was 16 received high critical praise. She graduated with honors from Interlochen Arts Academy and then attended Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she majored in harp and minored in piano. Bartlett has toured America and Europe as a soloist and chamber musician. Having served on the faculties of Duke University and the University of North Carolina, she is a member of the artist faculties of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Appalachian State University,

the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the Community School of the Arts at Spirit Square in Charlotte. Violist Browne has concertized in many of the world’s major halls as soloist, chamber musician and as principal violist of several orchestras. Also an active recitalist, she was featured by Michael Tilson–Thomas while principal of the New World Symphony in the PBS documentary “Beethoven Alive!” Browne is on the artist/professor faculty of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and has also recently joined the faculty of New York University. Flutist Reuter-Pivetta enjoys a diverse career as soloist, chamber artist, orchestral player and teacher. She has won numerous honors and has performed as concerto soloist with international and stateside orchestras. Reuter-Pivetta has also recorded works with her husband, pianist Federico Pivetta and is the principal flutist with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. - article submitted by Robert Wiley
