Walend (R), who was appointed to the seat recently, and Chris Whitmire (R). Tryon’s personnel policy states that no employee shall be a candidate for the (town) board of commissioners or any partisan election while in a pay status with the town. The policy also says an employee may be a candidate for a non-partisan election, excluding the town board of commissioners, but must take a leave of absence without pay 30 days prior to the primary election. If the employee wins a nonpartisan election, the N.C. General Statute concerning dual office-holding shall apply, the town policy says. Tryon Public Works Director Joel Burrell will assume Alley’s duties until a permanent solution is determined, according to Interim Town Manager Joey Davis. Tryon’s personnel policy seems more restrictive regarding running for elections than other local governments. Neither Polk County’s policy nor state policies restrict employees from running for partisan elections. Marche Pittman (R), who is running for Polk County Clerk

of Superior Court, is currently employed by Polk County as the information and technology director and magistrate, and Emily Bartlett (D), currently working for Polk County Schools as 21 Century director, is seeking a Polk County Board of Commissioners seat. In state elections, current District Attorney Jeff Hunt (R) is seeking the U.S. House of Representatives District 11 seat currently held by Heath Shuler (D), who is not seeking re-election. It is not known when Tryon’s personnel policy was enacted. Davis said council plans to discuss the policy at its March 20 meeting.

Eleven runs in final half send Landrum over Whitmire by Joey Millwood

Landrum is a off to a hot start this season within region play. The Cardinals dominated Greenville Tech Charter early last week and that streak continued on Friday night against Whitmire. Landrum is the defending Region II-1A champions and that’s carrying over into this season. Landrum coach Ray McCallister has been preaching aggressiveness to his team. He wants his team swinging early in the count, but only if they see something they like. “We want to be patient,” McCallister said, “but we want to be aggressively patient.” That game plan worked March 9 as the Cardinals scored 11 runs in the final four innings against Whitmire en route to an 11-1 victory. The Cardinal bats heated up in the third inning. Connor Noland took two strikes before hitting a shot to Whitmire’s third baseman Alex Ellison. Ellison tossed an errant throw to first base. Cardinal

leadoff hitter T.J. Fincher hit a ball through the legs of Wolverine shortstop Cory Robertson on the first pitch from Josh Johnson to drive in Noland. Two batters later, Landrum pitcher Kaleb Kuykendall laid down a perfect bunt to the first base side for an RBI single on the first pitch. Kuykendall would score on a sacrifice fly by Gus Wofford. The Cardinals scored five more runs in the fourth. Second baseman Jon Humphries drove in two runs with a single and Kuykendall drove in a run with a single. Wofford and Josey Smith drove in the other two runs for Landrum. Ellison relieved Johnson in the fifth inning for the Wolverines and kept the Cardinal bats silent. Caleb Pressley came on for Whitmire in the sixth inning. He retired Kuykendall, but walked Cardinal catcher Thomas Rabatie. Wofford and Smith followed with singles. Smith’s single drove in Rabatie. Pressley walked Trevor Walker to load the bases, but got ahead in the count on the next

batter Jacob Fowler. With two strikes, Fowler hit a deep ball into center field to drive in the gamewinning run. Kuykendall dominated the Wolverine bats on the mound. The only Whitmire run came in the fifth inning when he walked Johnson with the bases loaded. The senior allowed just four hits

and struck out 11. “I was just putting the ball in there where they could hit it,” Kuykendall said. “I wasn’t trying to do too much. I got a good defense behind me.” The Cardinals (2-4, 2-0) will play at Southside Christian tonight, Tuesday, March 13 at 7 p.m.

Benefit for local equestrian professional held March 31 A benefit for local equestrian trainer Nikki Guerrazzi will be held at Clear View Farm at 105 Smith Road in Landrum on Saturday, March 31 at 6 p.m. Guerazzi recently suffered a compound ankle fracture. Live music will be performed by local talent, food will be provided by Stone Soup of Landrum and beer and wine will be offered at a cash bar.

Organizers are also looking for people to donate items for a silent auction. If you are interested in donating, call Stephanie Canups at 864-859-8374. Tickets will be sold at the Farm House and Clear View Farm in Gowensville and at the gate on March 31. For more information, call Janne Smith at 864-616-0033. - article submitted by Jeanne Smith

Fashion show, luncheon raises money for O.P. Earle RIF program O. P. Earle Elementary has had a RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) program for almost 40 years. Every year, three times a year, O.P. Earle’s children have been able to select a book of their own to take home and keep. However, all of the substantial funding the school received from the national RIF organization has been eliminated because of cutbacks in the federal budget, so all of the money must be raised locally if the program is to continue. The big fundraiser this spring is a fashion show and luncheon on March 24 at the Spiegel Farm, featuring fashions from P.J.’s Fashions of Landrum. Local celebrity Pam Stone (star of the TV show “Coach,” radio personality and newspaper

columnist) will emcee. Guitar music will be provided by Henry Anderson, strings teacher at Landrum Middle School and Landrum High School. OPE’s principal, Nita High, and some of the teachers will help model the fashions. Six Magic Tree House books, personally autographed by author Mary Pope Osborne, will be auctioned off. The majority of money from ticket sales will go directly into the RIF fund for buying books for students next school year. Tickets must be purchased ahead of time and are available in the O.P. Earle office or at P.J.’s Fashions, located in downtown Landrum. - article submitted by Dawn Lynch

A weekend visit to Huntington Beach, S.C. It always seems to take ages to drive from the N.C. It has been a mild by Simon winter so the Thompson duck population was way down and we had to be happy with a handful of Scaup and a nice sized flock of Green-winged Teal. An adult Bald Eagle flew over the distant tree line and an Osprey put in a brief appearance over the nearby lagoon. The Carriage Trail along the back of the freshwater wetland has been improved a lot over the last couple of years and now allows unobstructed views into the nearby marshes and wetlands. Here we did see a few Gadwall, a small flock of Blue-winged Teal and several Common Moorhen, but the highlight of this walk had to be the Virginia Rail that fed in full view for all of us to enjoy at length. To be able to see such a shy bird so well was quite a treat. Before long it was time to eat (again!) and lunch was

Batik is one of her favorite techniques, she said, but she uses more of the contemporary adaptations because the traditional vat dyeing process limits color choices significantly. The Tryon Gallery Trot season kicks off on March 24 as Kathleen’s Gallery features the painted silks of Tryon artist Barbara Tilly. Barbara Tilly is a fiber artist who creates hand-painted silk scarves, wall hangings, handbags, and other textile art using silk painting, batik, gutta serti, and other techniques. Primarily a self-taught artist, Tilly said she is interested in color and texture and loves following the process to let the designs develop. “I don’t usually start a scarf or other piece with a destination in mind,” Tilly said. “ I just start putting colors on fabric and keep doing that in various ways until the piece tells me it’s done.” Tilly said she has always loved working with fabrics. “My mother was an expert seamstress - a tailor, really - and she taught me to sew when I was young,” she says. Because of her sewing experience, quilting was Tilly’s first step in her search for a textile art form more than 20 years ago. She soon realized that she enjoyed only the design and initial piecing stages of quilting; the quilting itself took too long without enough creativity in the process, she said. Silk painting - painting with dyes directly on silk (or other fabrics) - was a revelation for Tilly. There are virtually no limits on color, an infinite variety of techniques can be used, and the process itself is freely adaptable.
