and charm of Columbus and Polk County. Town officials said the entryway from I-26 is often the first point of entry for travelers to North Carolina and this new roadway enhancement will enhance their visit to Columbus. This project is designed to ensure that trees are planted within the N.C. DOT right-of-way. Every precaution has been made to ensure that the trees do not interfere with current signage, underground or aboveground utilities, or sight distances for travelers pulling onto Hwy. 108. “The town is very appreciative of the assistance provided by the Polk County Community Founda-
responded to a report that Lindsay’s death was from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but after evidence collected and witness statements were in substantial conflict, Case was charged with murder. Preliminary autopsy results confirmed Lindsay was murdered, according to Henderson County Sheriff’s Office reports. Case’s attorney, Roy Neill, last week made a motion for the court to set a bond. Judge Brooks ordered Case to have no contact with the victim’s family. Case’s next court date is April 16. tion via their unrestricted grants fund,” Columbus Manager Jonathan Kanipe said. “The foundation provided a $10,000 grant to the Town in order to proceed with this project. The Town would also like to recognize the significant contribution made by the N.C. DOT, which has managed this project and is paying for the contract work, including installation and purchase of the trees used in this project. The Town and the Polk County Appearance Commission could not have completed this project without the assistance of these two organizations.” For further information regarding this project, contact the Columbus Town Hall at 828-894-8236. – article submitted by the Town of Columbus

Cardinal changes make way for victory over Christ Church by Joey Millwood
When Christ Church rolled into Landrum on Friday night, a different version of the Cardinals was waiting for them. Head coach Ray McCallister made some drastic changes to his lineup. Landrum lost to Southside Christian 11-9 on March 13 after making six errors. The changes worked. Landrum showed a bounce in its step en route to a 6-2 victory. “I moved them around tonight and they responded in a positive way,” he said. “The kids went about their business.” That business on Friday night was winning. The Cavaliers harassed Cardinal pitcher Kaleb Kuykendall early. Jeff Benedict singled to start the game and then scored on a Bennett Nalley single. Landrum responded in the bottom half of the inning. T.J. Fincher singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a Jon Humphries ground out.
He then scored on a Kuykendall ground out. The score remained 1-1 until the bottom half of the third inning. Thomas Rabatie walked and then moved to third on a Gus Wofford single. Josey Smith drove in Rabatie on a single. Gavin Bishop followed with a walk and then Trevor Walker drove in two runs on a double. “It was an adjustment at the plate that helped me tonight,” Walker said. A tip from assistant coach Justin Henson gave Walker a little more bat speed. He finished the night 2-for-3 with two RBIs. The Cardinals added two more runs in the seventh inning on singles from Rabatie and Bishop. Wofford had a big night at the plate for Landrum. The senior was 4-for-4. “I was sitting back and trying to drive the ball,” Wofford said. “Our whole team did good hitting the ball tonight.” Kuykendall pitched a little more than he normally does with

spring break approaching. The senior threw 107 pitches. It had no effect on him. Kuykendall came out in the seventh inning and struck out the side. “Once he got going from the
fourth inning on, he did a great job,” McCallister said. “He’s doing what we need him to do.” The Cardinals will play at St. Joseph’s on Tuesday night in a big region matchup.

Edwards inducted into Alpha Chi National Honor Society
Valentine’s Day at Hospice
Denise Hoffman and Mary Sherman, volunteers at Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, deliver valentines to patients at White Oak Manor on Valentine’s Day. Hospice volunteers picked up and delivered valentines (baked goods, balloons and favorite goodies) to patients at home, in facilities and at the Hospice House in Polk County and Landrum. Some valentine couples even received a special “dinner for two.” All “valentines” were made possible through the generosity of the Kirby Hospice of the Carolina Foothills Jean Eckert Fund at the Polk County Community Foundation. Lauren Edwards, daughter of Mickey and Terri Edwards of Green Creek, was recently inducted into the Alpha Chi National Honor Society at Montreat College in Black Mountain, N.C. Alpha Chi National Honor Society identifies students who promote academic excellence and exemplary character among university students and honors those who achieve such distinction. Inductees have consistently ranked academically in the top 10 percent of all university juniors, seniors and graduate students. Edwards has received numerous honors during her studies at Montreat College. Each semester she has been named to the dean’s list or distinguished scholars list. The distinguished scholars list recognizes students who have maintained a 3.85 GPA during a semester. Edwards will graduate in December of 2012 with a bachelor’s of science in music business and a minor in business administration. She will spend the upcoming fall semester participating in an off-campus study in Nashville, Tenn., where she will study in the

executive track session. Executive track students work with artists in career direction and management; recording contract negotiations; planning, budgeting and producing artist demo sessions, and creating and executing a record marketing and sales plan. All students participate in an intensive road trip to a major music market, where they meet with record companies, artist management firms, recording studios, producers and artists. Edwards is a 2009 high school graduate who was homeschooled and an upcoming 2012 graduate of Montreat College. – article submitted by Mickey and Terri Edwards

RESIDENTIAL SPECIALIST
Julia Gillespie listens to Ashlyn Ramsey’s heart using a stethoscope. In February, students at Saluda Elementary School learned all about their hearts and how to keep them healthy. Teachers led special classroom activities about heart health. Tips on heart health were shared on the daily morning news show. In PE classes, students jumped rope and listened to heartbeats using stethoscopes. Students donated $102 to the American Heart Association after participating in Jump Rope for Heart. Masquerade ball March 31 continues centuries-old tradition The masquerade ball, or “bal masque” has its origins in the 15th century and has survived to this day. Tryon’s 2012 April Fool’s Festival will continue the tradition on Saturday, March 31. The fun begins at historic Sunnydale at 7 p.m. with music by The Carburetors. Beverages and barbeque by Fast Eddie’s Fine Swine will be available for purchase. Costumes are optional, but organizers said guessing the identity of other party-goers was half the fun last year. vincing Charlie Chaplin and the Maharaja and Maharani of Byrd were among last year’s costume winners. It is rumored that this year’s ball will be attended by a famous “historical couple.” Once again, prizes will be awarded in all sorts of categories. When asked “Why a bal masque?” festival organizers said, “Everyone, big or small, computer geek or specialist of boutique… has a fool living inside them. And it is very important that at least once a year around April 1 we all
let our fools out and celebrate! If we don’t, it is scientifically proven, the fool might come out by itself at a very inappropriate moment.” Tickets are available at Kathleen’s gallery in Tryon or from any Tryon Downtown Development Association board member. The 2012 April Fool’s Ball is co-sponsored by Owens Pharmacy and Vines & Stuff. “Come as you are not!” organizers said. – article submitted by Linda Byington

At 13 years old, Kristina Miller shows a passion for volunteer work and an empathy for people in need you might expect from someone three times her age. “She’s a very caring child, always has been. Pretty much since she had a personality she’s cared about others. We enjoy having a child that wants to do things for other people, and we encourage her to do that,” said Pam Miller, Kristina’s mother. In the past, Kristina has volunteered for “Queen for a Day,” an organization that boosts the self-esteem of terminally ill girls. Volunteers help the children forget their illness for a while with fun activities such as make-overs. The pediatric patients even get to be crowned a queen. Kristina has also worked at nursing homes, soup kitchens and other community service activities. When her great-grandmother suffered two strokes and was admitted to Hospice House, the experience had a great impact on her, Kristina said. “They did a great job taking care of her and really comforting her, and I wanted to give back,” Kristina said. Kristina set her plan in motion when her mother told her about volunteer options at Hospice. She recruited her grandmother to post an ad on the bulletin board of her church, Second Baptist in Greer,
